Cooney gets job done in VFL

WESTERN Bulldogs midfielder Adam Cooney regained some touch and got through unscathed in a VFL practice match for Williamstown against the Northern Bullants at Whitten Oval yesterday.

The Brownlow Medallist, who had post-season knee surgery and has been managed through summer, showed some glimpses although he appeared to tighten up in the final term after playing 70 per cent of game time.

Bulldogs development coach Peter German, also the Williamstown coach, said Cooney had done everything the club had asked of him.

"It was what we wanted. He got some tackles, he got some touches," German said.

"It wasn't about him going out and getting 50 possessions. It was all about him playing and getting through. He didn't do the Cooney-type things but we were happy with him," he said.

The Bulldogs may decide to ask for permission for Cooney, who played with his right knee strapped, to get extra game time in another VFL practice match next Friday against the Box Hill Hawks in the scheduled week off for AFL clubs.

Western Bulldogs youngster Ayce Cordy also impressed the club faithful with his strong marking in defence and follow up with two pin-point passes. He also had some game-time in the ruck.

"He [Cordy] had a few purple patches and we think he's going along well so far," German said.

    The curse is dead.

Adam Cooney keeps it low key

Mark Stevens - Herald Sun - 5 March

IT wasn't pretty, but you've got to start somewhere.

Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney made his first appearance in the VFL since his debut season in 2004 last night, playing 70 minutes for Williamstown.

Cooney was not dominant in the scrappy practice match, but fitness staff were satisfied that he moved freely.

The 2008 Brownlow winner, who missed last season's finals with a serious hamstring injury, also had post-season knee surgery.

Sounds as if we are managing him well, and hopefully he is on track to play, if not Round 1, then early in the season! Welcome back Coooooooooney

If you are maming a reference to contradictory reports I think the Age means Firday weeks game which would be the week AFL clubs have off.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

                    ITWFICL to this post.

But anyhow good to see Cooney getting a run through, hope they aren't pushing him too hard for round one, there is a long season and hopefully a long finals run this year the team needs him for.

My impression is this means the friday after, cause all the teams play next week. Typo?
