Fireys thought blaze woman had fled Newport townhouse fire

A FORMER AFL player has has thanked firefighters for battling a house blaze that killed his sister overnight.
Christine Wilcox, 59, died after the blaze at her Newport townhouse last night.

It is understood she may have been smoking in bed before the blaze, which gutted the upper storey of her townhouse.

Her brother, Peter Foster, returned to the scene this morning.

Mr Foster, who won Footscray's best and fairest in 1990 and played 163 games for the club, said firefighters did the best they could, after crews originally thought anyone inside had already escaped.

Commiserations to Peter and his family.

I used to rent that house.

Received a phone call last night from the police asking if I knew the whereabouts of the deceased.

Once fire gets into a roof space, there's no impediment to keep it from spreading through the entire house. From there, it can build to a ferocious intensity before actually breaking through the tiles/steel/roof cover. So in reality, a fire that "doesn't look that bad" can pretty much get through an entire house in very little time.

                  Condolences to all involved.
