Jason Tutt has been given licence to exploit his pace and outside run for the Western Bulldogs and with 15 career games under his belt, he is starting to find the confidence to take the game on.

Stringing together seven games so far this season, the 22-year-old is building form and beginning to show what he is capable of at senior level, averaging almost 16 disposals, five inside 50s and a goal in the past three rounds.

“The coaching staff are trying to really back me that if I see space in front of me just to run with the footy a bit more, have a bounce, draw a player, give a one, two and get it back,” Tutt said.

“So back to that metres gained stat… and if I’m within range and have the opportunity to kick the goal, I’ll definitely take it upon myself to kick it and finish off.”

“I know there’s definitely weaknesses in my game which I will continue to improve on but it is just knowing what my strengths are and bringing that to my game every week – which I think I have done after the last two weeks.”

Consistency of performance has also been a focus for the Canberra product, spending time back at Williamstown in the VFL to ply his trade.

“I think just going back to VFL, playing consistent footy back there and then to come in and playing the way that the coaching staff have wanted me to play all year,” he said.

“Just that run and carry, break the lines and metres gained player.”

Tutt currently ranks equal sixth at the Bulldogs in average inside 50s, while contributing to the scoreboard with four goals and four goal assists.



Interesting article on Tutty. Another 18 possession game last week shows that he is being more consistent now too. You forget he has played only 15 games. Let's hope he keeps his form up.

I'd like to see him do this more often. He's had instances in the past two weeks where he could and should have had a shot and instead went for the lower percentage pass.

Agree - he is even starting to go when its his turn. He still needs to "think less" and do more when the ball is to be won, a few times on the weekend he hesitated for half a second which meant W/C could clear the ball. Having said that it was very early in the game and he seemed to improve this as the game went on.

Totally agree BAD, totally agree. Once he believes he belongs, he will be extrememly damaging.

I think, like Grant, he's not going to end up the player he thought he was. But it will work if he does what he's told. That's one issue - these kids have gown up watching TV at a time when run and kick to the contest was the way of it. What we want is finals footy from the get go - Players to have that hunger for the ball, the second and third contest or to put it another way, midfielder's mentality ( a la Crossy ).
He's going to end up different to how he imagined, but he'll do it for the team.

I have made a bit of a point of watching both Tutty and Addo. over recent weeks, and while they are not getting huge stats what they are doing when they don't have the ball is quite encouraging.

There is a lot of stuff that makes up a good team performance, or a contribution that does not show up in the formal stats... blocking, pushing opponents out of contests, a hand in here or there, creating space for others etc.
This part of both guy's games is steadily improving, and is making them both more valued contributors to the total team performance.
