    GD's Top 20 - 2015 Draft

I was meaning to get this finalised and out a few weeks ago, but just put the finishing touches on it this morning. Probably quite a lot has changed since I started preparing it, but this is a glimpse at some of the players I rate this year and where they may land on draft day.

    1. Jacob Weitering - 195cm, 94 kgs
Key defender who played for Vic Country in this years U/18 champs. Seems the consensus number one pick, which is somewhat unusual given he's 'just a key defender'. Should become a very good key defender in the modern game, is a good user and can create from the back half. Good intercept player and will be an important piece in any side's team defence model.

    2. Aaron Francis - 191cm, 92kgs
One of many SA lads I will be featuring in my top 20 this year. I think Aaron will end up a very high quality player who, because of his versatility, will be a utility at AFL rotating through all areas. He's competitive, he's got a booming foot and reads the ball well in the air. He's also a good athlete and has a frame which will develop well in an AFL system, making him a quick, strong player who is difficult to match up on and will be competitive against the new medium forward (think players Stringer's size).

I'd be very surprised if he got past Melbourne/Essendon in that 3-7 range and could also see Gold Coast showing interest at 6.

    3. Jacob Hopper - 185cm, 83kgs
Jacob is a NSW player who will be playing for GWS in 2016. He's a very good player inside the contest meaning he will win a lot of clearances and contested ball at AFL, and also be a player who records a number of tackles (in fact, I could see his stat sheet reading pretty similarly to Tom Liberatore). Whilst he isn't afraid to hit the scoreboard he has some development in his outside game. A good modern sized midfielder who I think is a safe bet to play 200+ games of AFL.

GWS will take him, just a matter of who bids for him so what the price will be in this crazy new system (which I actually like, as it creates opportunity for astute trading). I think he'll get a big in the first 3-4 picks.

    4. Josh Schache - 199cm, 101kgs
Tall key position forward from Victoria. A neat kicking, overhead marking key forward with significant size which is what most clubs are after. Projects as the type of player who will end up a forward-ruck, spending a few minutes chopping out for the #1 ruck. Should be mobile enough to play as a big forward at AFL level and appears to have reasonable endurance (although did not test at the DC). Like Tom Boyd, will take a bit of time to make his mark.

Brisbane seem likely to jump on him at #2 given their lack of key position players.

    5. Callum Mills - 188cm, 80kgs
Another Sydney Academy player, but one they will have to give up a bit for. Callum is a inside-midfielder first who will do well in the congested situations with his composure and decision making. Given his height and overhead ability could become an effective player resting at either end of the ground, which he also has the endurance for.

Sydney, again just a matter of who bids on him first. Like Hopper, expect a bid will come early.

    6. Riley Bonner - 190cm, 85kgs
I'm not sure why, but the SA prospect Riley has seemed to slip a bit in the ratings over the past month or so. He's a great sized prospect who kicks the ball very well and should be capable of playing all over the park at AFL level. He won't be a powerful utility like Francis above, but he'll be a smooth moving utility who you will want one more of, and then two more of given he will be capable in the midfield, as a distributor from the back half and an effective high forward who can mark the ball.

If Adelaide don't jump at 9 I can see Carlton being all over him at 11 based on the success of Cripps and their need for midfield/versatile talent with kicking ability. Should be off the table by pick 15.

    7. Ben Keays - 185cm, 80kgs
Ben is a Brisbane Lions Academy player and one they'll be very happy to land. He's an inside-outside midfielder who can mark the ball and hit the scoreboard (actually, why don't I have him higher...?). He makes good decisions and uses his left foot to good effect, although perhaps a little one-sided. He seems one of the better example of having both an inside and outside game at this stage but I won't be surprised to see a few others overtake him in time. He isn't fast off the mark but has good endurance.

Brisbane will take him and I expect a club will bid within the first 8-10 picks.

    8. Ryan Burton - 191cm, 88kgs
A SA lad who has had his (un)fair share of injuries which make him one of the more intruiging prospects in this draft class. I made the mistake of having Stringer too late and as Burton draws comparisons to Jake (for a few reasons) I'm going to ensure I don't make that mistake again. He is best suited forward at the moment, is a good lead and mark player who has good size and good hands. Not sure he's as damaging as The Package at ground level, it's still an area he's good in through, and we will get a better idea as he continues to recover from his broken leg.

This is a hard one, some risk involved but the reward could be huge. Hawthorn are capable of taking a punt. Do Adelaide need him after acquiring Menzel? Maybe not. Richmond and St Kilda are my best guesses. If he gets beyond pick 15 anyone, including us, could be in the mix.

    9. Mitchell Hibberd - 190cm, 86kgs
I'm not sure why I don't have everyone's favourite Tasmanian higher to be honest. The times I've seen him play I've been very impressed. He's a good mover, he uses the ball well with a penetrating boot and is versatile enough to play all over the park but perhaps best as a midfielder, half back. His testing was exceptional which means he has probably stepped up a bit in the rankings of most clubs.

Any club would do well to snare him. I wonder if he's in the mix for Melbourne and Carlon early and could see Hawthorn and North both being interested too. I'd love him at the Dogs but I expect he'll be gone before we select.

    10. Darcy Parish - 180cm, 74kgs
A small midfielder from the Vic Country side who has very tidy skills and is capable of developing into an outside-in midfielder at AFL level. His best work will be done receiving in tight and using his skills, composure and decision making to move the ball effectively. He does most things well but lacks a bit of size compared to some of his contemparies. Thankfully for him, because of his ball use he could play forward or back as a smart user as his contested game continues to develop.

If Carlton snare a tall midfielder early, they could balance their selections with Parish. Otherwise I think teams like Melbourne (who lost Toumpas) St Kilda or North Melbourne could see the appeal and afford to go small in the first round. Not sure he's a player Essendon should target, which means that's where he'll probably land.

    Re: GD's Top 20 - 2015 Draft

    11. Charlie Curnow - 191cm, 95kgs
Another Vic Country prospect, Charlie is a very interesting player who is perhaps a forward first but projects as a player who could end up playing some serious midfield minutes too. He's another that will draw comparisons to Stringer for his size and versatility although perhaps doesn't have the tricks Jake has. I'd be very reluctant to go past him in the first 10 selections because of his upside although a question mark on his consistent application has him sitting here in my rankings.

Another in the Burton mould above, risk/reward selection but one I think a few clubs will line up to take. Melbourne, Essendon and Carlton for mine but if he got through I couldn't see Richmond passing.

    12. Matthew Kennedy - 187cm, 88kgs
A GWS Academy player who most seem to have higher than where I've put him. He's a great size for the modern midfielder role who can win his own ball, kick goals and appears to be a good endurance athlete who lacks break neck speed. Like a couple of other midfielders in this years draft he isn't flawless and needs to continue to work on ensuring every disposal is a winner.

It seems he'll get a bid early and GWS will jump to secure him. I'd say someone in the top 10 nominates him.

    12. Luke Partington - 181cm, 78kgs
Yes, another SA prospect. Luke has show he has all of the tools to become a very good player at AFL level. He's a well rounded athlete who tested well in both the speed and endurance tests, which seems a rare combination this year with not many of the better players having those traits. He is a good user, he makes good decisions and he can hit the scoreboard. On the smaller side which has him sitting here and not any higher.

I can see the Crows jumping on him at 13 but that might be a bit early. I expect he'll be gone by 25 and could see the appeal to Essendon or Fremantle in the early second round area.

    13. Eric Hipwood - 202cm, 84kgs
Eric is a Brisbane Academy player and is perhaps the best key defender outside of Weitering. His testing was very good for speed, highlighting his athleticism which puts him above a few of the other options, particularly at this size. He's a good mark and should become a dominant intercept player at AFL level. He needs to continue to improve his kicking but I could see him ending up a swing man with his marking ability and speed if he can neaten up and be more consistent in making the right choices - both things he can improve on.

Someone will bid early on him and he'll land in Brisbane. Maybe Essendon or Melbourne as the sides that bid whilst Adelaide may also if it isn't done before 13.

    14. Clayton Oliver - 187cm, 86kgs
A really interesting player who has moved into calculations of going in the first round, and perhaps in the first 15, based on his finish to the year. A really good sized midfielder who should be capable of playing a few roles at AFL level, with the ability to win his own ball, be clean around the contest and finish nicely.

Likely to go in that 12-24 range and think he will appeal to quite a few clubs. Carlton, Adelaide, Richmond and Hawthorn could all be in the mix, and if he snuck through to us I think we'd look pretty closely.

    15. Callum Ah Chee - 181cm, 72kgs
I'm not sure too much needs to be said about Ah Chee, he has a number of fans and a lot of tricks which should see him develop at least, into a pacey, high leaping forward who can hurt you with 15 possessions. I also wonder whether he would be effective off a half back line at AFL, and indeed, if he will develop the motor to play serious midfield minutes. He can drift in and out of games a bit based on his junior form line, but in an AFL environment with fitness, continued training and team mates trying to bring him into the game, it's not a huge concern.

So where will he land? I think North could show some interest and perhaps Hawthorn might view him as too good a talent to pass up albeit they have more pressing needs. He's more a nice to have for sides like Carlton and St Kilda who I see as having more pressing needs. Us, Freo and West Coast could come into calculations.

    16. Mason Redman - 186cm, 77kgs
What, another SA lad and I haven't named Milera yet? Yeah....I have no doubt he won't feature in the top 20 on draft day, probably in the 25-50 range I suspect. But he just has something about his game that I find appealing. He's a good mover, he's a good shape and size to develop, he's got solid skills and can take a mark. The query I guess is what role does he play at AFL? Can he play as a high forward, could be potentially play off a wing or half back flank? What is his defensive work going to be like at AFL level? There are some questions around him but based on intangibles from viewing him, he's landed here.

No idea where he ends up, but suspect Adelaide is a logical fit, but think Richmond, North Melbourne and maybe Collingwood could see the benefit in adding him.

    17. Wayne Milera - 183cm, 77kgs
OK, here he is. I really like his game, he's proven himself a performer at both U/18 level and playing in the SANFL. He's quick, he's got skill, hits the scoreboard and he can perform in the big moments. My only concern about him is where will he end up playing his best football at AFL level? If it's as a small forward I'm not sure he has quite the arsenal of tricks that some of the really good ones do (albeit, that may be a harsh view) and if he plays further up the field, how is he going to go with consistently impacting games given winning his own ball won't be a strength? He'll probably end up being better than the Hill brothers playing a wing, high forward role, but he's one I just have some minor concerns on so he's dropped a little bit.

Adelaide will be hoping to snare him, and I think some other sides who may see benefit in taking him. Melbourne and Essendon probably have more glaring needs, but have a few early selections so can balance that out. St Kilda potentially in the mix too.

    18. Harry McKay - 200cm, 95kgs
The big key forward who seems a versatile prospect who could play all over the park. His testing wasn't quite as good as I thought it would be but he has good endurance and moves well for such a big bloke, whilst he did test OK for the repeat sprints. Seems likely someone will jump on him early because of his size and will develop his strength and power game in the AFL system. Reliable user and has solid hands.

Who needs a tall key forward? Gold Coast could jump, Richmond might want another developing option and if he slips out of the first round Fremantle could also see the appeal here.

    19. James Parsons - 189cm, 77kgs
Probably another whose name won't be called until that 25-50 range, but one that I find appealing because of his size and that he's a good mover. He's got some ability too. He's a good kick and can potentially play as a high forward, midfielder at AFL level. He's perhaps similar to Redman in that he just possess some qualities that make you think with a year or two in the system, he could develop into a very handy player whose versatility stands out.

A good sized player who moves well, but isn't that highly rated by most? He could be in our mix for sure. I like him for St Kilda, Essendon and Port later in the draft too.

    20. Rhys Mathieson - 185cm, 82kgs
A contested ball winning, stoppage player who hunts the ball and has aggression in the contest. He should develop into one of those annoying players who consistently racks up high production numbers and can generate good forward movement for his side out of the clearance, whilst having the defensive intent to prevent the opposition doing so. Not sure he's going to be a flashy, eye catching player but a death by a thousand cuts type. He should develop into a solid AFL player and is one I'd back in to play 150 games if he lands in the right side.

Carlton, Essendon and Melbourne could all benefit from him, but I think he's in that 15-30 range, so it may be that those sides have addressed needs elsewhere and don't require him. Gold Coast could potentially be a good fit, but it's hard to read their midfield needs after so many injuries last year. Perhaps he slides out and Fremantle or West Coast snare him?

Thanks for the excellent read, GD. Your views are different on quite a number of players to the consensus opinions that seem to evolve on other sites, BF in particular. Appreciate that.

He's so hard for me to place, given I haven't seen him really dominate more so have some flashy moments where he impacts the game for 5 minutes and then goes quiet again.

Based on his testing and lineage I'd expect him to go in the first 25 and I'd probably have him in my next 10 names.

              Great stuff GD.

It will be interesting draft night with what happens with Burton and Oliver, both who have had injuries and Curnow with his recent misdemeanor. My feeling is Curnow may still go early.
