    Matthew Flynn

PeanutsPeanuts has been strong on Matthew Flynn

    Worth a read

NARRANDERA big man Matt Flynn admits a nervous Tuesday night awaits as he prepares to embark on an AFL career.

Flynn arrived back home in Narrandera on Monday after a brief holiday on the Sunshine Coast where he tried to keep his mind off Tuesday night’s AFL Draft.

The 200cm ruckman will watch the Draft at home in Narrandera with parents Graham and Julie where he predicts an anxious hour or so.

“It will be alright for the first round, because I won’t be expecting anything there,” Flynn said.
“After that, it will be hard. The nerves will kick in.”
Flynn is considered one of the best ruckman available in the Draft with Western Bulldogs the frontrunners to secure his services.

Greater Western Sydney (GWS) will get the chance to step in before any potential suitors given he is a product of the Giants Academy.
Flynn said it is impossible to know how things will unfold.
“To be honest, I’ve got absolutely no idea,” he said.
“The clubs are that tight-lipped, they don’t give anything away.
“A couple of clubs have shown interest and give you a bit of an idea, but not much.
“Western Bulldogs have shown the most interest towards me, in the things that I’ve picked up on, but who knows.”
One of Flynn’s strengths is his marking and he credits that to his sudden rise to ruck status.
“I’ve only been in the ruck since under 16s,” he said.
“Before that I played centre half forward and centre half back.”

Would he be worth our last pick?

I had him high up early GVG, he is a huge lump of a lad, but quite agile and has a really good attack on the footy. A couple of other big, raw youngsters have developed late in the season to also be in the mix. I am sure we are taking a project ruck this year (we've been linked to a few, including Luke Goetz, who has permission to train with us).

I reckon we may take Flynn or Nyoun with our last pick proper if we are worried of other suitors. Even if we do pick Flynn, GWS may counterbid (hopefully they've used up all their points by then).

If not, I can see them being good rookie options, if available, along with Goetz or Kyle Galloway.

If we nail good kpd prospects with our draft picks, I wouldn't be shocked if we rookied 2 young project rucks (we seem to be spreading a fairly wide net).

Thanks for the article GVG. Good to hear of our interest from him first hand.

He's been on the radar for quite a while. Great size about him yet pretty athletic around the ground and, unlike a lot of younger rucks, seems to have a real liking for the contest.

I reckon we will take either Flynn or Nyoun with our last pick if we think others are set to pounce. If we take Flynn, we still run the risk of GWS counterbidding (hopefully their points will be used up by then).

If we go to rookie for project rucks, I can see us also considering Luke Goetz (is already training with us) and Kyle Galloway.

Would be a departure, but if we really nail our draft picks and rookie Adcock, I wonder if the last 2 rookie spots could both go to Ruck prospects ? We seem to be casting a fairly wide net with rucks this year - Andre Parella is another huge, mobile, raw prospect I have heard mentioned and, no doubt, our list managers also have their secrets.

PP, do you think he is suited to AFL, or are we interested due to his height? I know nothing about him, but it does worry me when looking at big lump of kids who can dominate under age but straggle against men.

BAD, it's always a gamble but there are a few factors in Flynn's favour:

          - he is not a beanpole that dominates juniors through sheer height, he is already over 100 kgs and still mobile.
          - he also loves the physical aspect of the game, unlike some talented, tall kids who can be intimidated when coming up against men.
          - he has played some local senior footy and thrived (I have seen Riverina footy live - standard is not great, but the competitiveness is fierce).
          - he has spent time at GWS academy, AFL type environment, and impressed. GWS are stocked for young rucks, but some there are big fans. They see traits of a young Mumford in him.

He is very raw and is a fair way off AFL standard, as you would expect from a teenage ruck but, as punts go, if Dal sees the necessary attributes, I'd be rapt to get him.

I'm a big fan too. The main thing I look for in a ruck is competitiveness and physicality and he has that in spades. I'd even be happy enough if we bid our 3rd pick for him.

Pretty sure some draft watchers rate him higher than Gach Nyuon, probably due to the physical development issue

Good call, Flynn gone at 41 & Nyuon undrafted

A few scoffed at my suggestion of this over on the other forum, but I always thought Nyuon was next to a guarantee to go undrafted. Not even certain he'll be rookied.
