    Simon Dalrymple Summarises the Picks.

KEY DEFENSIVE stocks at the Western Bulldogs have received a surprise boost after a successful night at the NAB AFL draft.

Bulldogs recruitment manager Simon Dalrymple was shocked when Dandenong Stingrays defender Kieran Collins was still on the draft table at pick No.26, and he jumped at the chance to take him.

Mature-age recruit Marcus Adams from WAFL club West Perth is also now a Dog, with the club identifying the need to pick up some tall defenders with physical presence at this year's draft.

Dalrymple also added to the club's midfield stocks with Josh Dunkley overlooked by the Sydney Swans under the father/son rule.

South Australian Bailey Williams rounded out the Bulldogs' new crop for 2016, and Dalrymple told AFL.com.au that the night went exactly how he'd hoped as far as his recruiting strategy was concerned.

"Early on we were after the best available talent and then later in the draft we were looking at some needs," Dalrymple told AFL.com.au.

"Obviously one of our needs is a key defender, so with Kieran (Collins) also meeting the best player criteria, that really was a bonus, and Marcus (Adams) fitted that strategy as well.

    "We achieved both our goals."

Selection No. 25 – Josh Dunkley (father/son - Sydney Swans did not match bid)

"To get Josh, who we felt with his leadership, ability to win the ball at ground level, a good mark, and his leadership, was crucial for us. That was a good result that Sydney didn't match that bid." - Simon Dalrymple

Selection No. 26 – Kieran Collins

"That was probably the biggest surprise of the night that he got through. As a key defender he was in our mix at pick 11, which we had ahead of the trade period, so he's a bonus for sure." - Simon Dalrymple

Selection No. 35 – Marcus Adams

"He's a big man, 'The Specimen' as our coach calls him, a powerful key defender who can play straight away we think. He's athletic and powerful and a really good young fellow." - Simon Dalrymple

Selection No. 48 - Bailey Williams

"He's a midfielder/half back from Glenelg, a good decision maker, a late developer and he's really grown in height during the year and his performances have improved." - Simon Dalrymple

What a brilliant result that we were considering Collins at pick 11, and got him at 26. In a way - Dunkley is the one we got for free via the Carlton picks trade.

          Other way around, apparently.

The way SD describes Williams I get the feeling they are hopeful he develops into a long term replacement for Bob.

Really like that we are adding leaders with Wallis,Bont,Roughie and now Dunkley we will be well served into the future.

In his highlight video, he does a few things that bear a slight resemblance to Bob. The way he receives the ball and takes off.

So why did Sydney not match the bid?

Surely there wasn't some back room deal by any chance? ie the Talia deal for nothing and possible hand shake on
if you bid for Dunks we won't match it?

I heard that they wouldn't match it if a Victorian club bid for him on the radio.

Two key defenders, an inside mid and a mid/half back ball user.

                      No Rucks, no pacey runners.

We will likely get Adcock and maybe D MacPherson.

Possibly another ruck as a rookie.

I really see a very deep list forming and one that will be hard to find spots in the 22.

They would have gone into a points deficit next year if they matched the bid.
We gave them Talia, they handed us Biggs and left Dunkley for us knowing Dal was huge on him. I think we're starting to work well together.

Sydney was going to go into a points deficit for next year, so maybe that's why. Apparently they could have another good youngster in next year's draft.

Most draft commentators talking about Sydney and Dunkley mentioned that Sydney were unlikely to match a bid from a Victorian club as Dunkley gave the impression he would prefer to stay in Victoria if possible. Given Dunkley's late decision to nominate under the father-son rule, I can only assume there was already some sort of understanding in place.

SYDNEY SWANS recruiting guru Kinnear Beatson says his club's recruiting strategy drove the decision to overlook Josh Dunkley – son of former Swans veteran Andrew – in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

Andrew Dunkley played 217 games for the Swans, and Josh had nominated the Swans as his club of choice under the AFL's father-son rule, but when the Western Bulldogs made a bid for the teenager with pick No.25, Beatson opted not to match it.

The move surprised some but Beatson told AFL.com.au that although the decision was hard, the Swans' needs came first.

"It was a difficult one but that's what the bidding system is, and when the bid came up from the Bulldogs, we had to have a look and try and work out who was going to be there," Beatson said.

"We'd mentioned to Josh that it was a possibility so he wouldn't be surprised by that.

"That’s just what footy is at the moment with list sizes of 38, that's what list management is – you have to take the emotion out of it.

"Our main strategy in the draft was to try to improve our kicking skills, we lost 'Jetts' (Lewis Jetta) and 'Shawry' (Rhyce Shaw), and (Nick) Malceski the year before, and we were a bit light on for guys who could really kick it.

"These days in footy you have to be able to maintain possession so that was a real focus for us."
