Clubs with a number of early selections did very well, such was the quality of this draft field.

Outside of them, I really liked the Swans draft (and Carlton, too).
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Brisbane nailed it. Essendon really grabbed some potential quality mids. Sydney did very well with their picks too.

Swans did very well albeit breaking a code in selecting Florent
Brisbane also got some great talent including the player I believe was the best in the draft.
Fremantle got 4 players who can play significant senior football for them next season

Of course the Suns and Giants made off like bandits as well.

West Coast got 3 local lads and one Victorian who could be a star.
Carlton looked at midfielders early and topped off the night with tall defenders and a key forward.

Strong draft if you had the right cards.

So we did OK consider our drafting positions?

Re: Club-by-Club draft. How did we go?

We've addressed 3 areas that I thought we needed to.

                * We have our young developing ruckman in English

                * We picked up a key position player in Young

                * We took Lipinski as a mid sized forward and this is a good move in my view as Crameri and Dickson are in their late 20's

I don't know anything about Greene so we will have to wait and see. Perhaps the only area we didn't add to was the speedy midfielder although it is well noted we were keen on dudes like Cox and Williams. Maybe Greene has some of this in his game.

I thought Freo drafted well from their position. Sydney as well. Brisbane couldn't really miss and didn't.

But best of all was Hawthorn. I like their draft the best.

BulldogsTV speaks to Recruiting Manager Simon Dalrymple in Sydney for his immediate reaction to the Club's draft night performance and new recruits.

Also some highlights of each new Dog, little bits Bonts and a Little Danger seen in some of the highlights.
Exciting time ahead if they work out.

They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Thanks a lot for the analysis Doc. So we drafted well and addressed our needs. We know you are bullish about English. What's your expectations about this year draftees? Patience and long-term development or can we expect any of them coming in next year? It would be really hard for any of them to compete for a spot in the team. I think they all have to do their times at Footscray.

I don't think many will agree with me but if we did a hindsight's draft now I think we could have selected players who would have made us stronger next year and possibly the year after that so I think we have certainly taken a long term view with our selections.

I can't quite describe the draft for us. It's somewhat different to previous years but then again is it?

Two years ago we drafted 5 midfielders with differing skill sets but similar athletic traits and got a father son selection late. All but one of those boys have played senior football.

Last year we drafted a big mid who plays forward, 2 key defenders with one being ready made and the other who will need some time and then topped off the night by getting a good sized and skillful back flanker before getting another in the rookie draft.

This year we got a ruckman and potentially 3 tall forwards although we could expect one of them to be tried as a defender. We should expect that they will need time to develop.

I think I asked this a couple of years ago but are we drafting in clusters of guys with similar traits and knowing our development program should get the best out of them?

Development being the key ..Richmond and Melbourne have shown for many years it doesn't matter how good the player is if you haven't got good development people and a plan for each individual's position in senior footy they will fail .
We I Think have one of the best development programs in the business and players are more likely to make it than not.
Hamling is a great example of training a player in a specific role and getting the best out of him.

                            FoxFooty analysis

                            WESTERN BULLDOGS

Who they got: Tim English (19), Patrick Lipinski (28), Lewis Young (49), Fergus Greene (70)

What they said: “205cm ruckman Tim English was taken with the Bulldogs’ first pick, 19th overall, the athletic 19-year-old impressing scouts with his ability to cover the ground and pick-up possessions.” – Western Bulldogs website

An exceptional kick for his size with a clean pair of hands, the Western Australian boasts a genuine midfield presence.

Analysis: English was a solid pick at 19 for both player and club, with neither in a rush to develop the ruckman as quickly as he might have been elsewhere. Lipinski and Young both came earlier than many might have tipped, but fit needs at the Dogs.

We have drafted for the longer term. Our list is in excellent shape and we have a host of players coming back from injury to compete with the premiership players so we can afford to take a long term approach. We have been doing this with players like Webb & Hamilton and we can probably add Williams, Lynch and Smith as well. We are still building from underneath and I love that.

Having said that I wouldn't be surprised if we see Lipinski play a bit of senior footy next year. One thing I love about Bevo's coaching, aside from his ability to win premierships, is he is prepared to give youngsters a decent go at it. I really like this pick and am looking forward to seeing him in our colours next year.

Hawthorn are becoming early Freo like. yes very sarcastic but happy, from our point of view, about how they are going about things these days.
