Curtain-raisers feature in 2017 VFL draw

Love this news! Bring on the double headers

Curtain-raisers feature in 2017 VFL draw

FOOTBALL fans in Victoria can look forward to three curtain-raisers next year and possibly more, following the release of the VFL fixture for 2017.

Already locked in on May 6 is a Footscray-Richmond clash at Etihad Stadium at 3pm ahead of a Western Bulldogs-Richmond AFL game that evening.

On June 24, Footscray and North Melbourne affiliate Werribee will meet in the afternoon ahead of the Bulldogs-Kangaroos round 14 clash.

On August 5, Werribee and Collingwood will play before North Melbourne hosts Collingwood.

The VFL schedule also has a tentative MCG curtain-raiser planned for May 20 with a Collingwood-Box Hill Hawks game preceding the round nine Collingwood-Hawthorn clash.

This year's grand finalists Footscray and Casey have been scheduled for just one re-match, in round nine, while North supporters interested in watching the club's listed players at Werribee will need to be prepared to travel, with no home games at Avalon Airport Oval because of redevelopment works.

The season begins with Footscray hosting Box Hill on Good Friday at the Whitten Oval. The grand final will be on September 24, six days before the AFL Grand Final.

The curtain raisers are a great concept.

Bring back the under 19's and we've almost gone full circle.

Yes back in the old school VFL days I believe that all the reserves were played at the same venue before the seniors.

Yep Easty, many a weekend spent at the western oval watching the under 19's then the reserves before the main game.

When I went out to the Whitten Oval with the train a few weeks back for the pre season match there I was thinking this is what it was likely in those days but back then you go there very 2 weeks

I hate the idea with a passion. It means two less games at Whitten oval.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I remember when the seniors and reserves played at home, the under 19s played away, so there was never three games on ?

I think they did have all three at the same ground up until the late '50s. I'm not 100% sold on being completly certain but I could be wrong too.

I have vague memories of watching three games in a row at the Whiten Oval, but can't be positive.
For some reason I have a memory of watching a couple of blokes I went to tech with run around in the 18's followed by the two senior games.

Maybe I'm getting to old and the memory is going. I could have swore I watch 3 games on the day.
Didn't Grand final day have the three finals play on the same day?

I began typing "Yep absolutely 100%, but then thought "maybe not?!". I'm fairly sure there were three, but not positive. I think there was a mix of three on a day and two on a day. I believe in order to spread the load on the grounds, the U/19's would play on the opposite ground in the depths of winter, whilst they'd occasionally switch that scenario around between the U/19s and ressies.

I believe that with both Fitzroy and Hawthorn sharing Princes Park, the rotations were compromised, so games had to be rotated a bit more. Otherwise PP would be copping a belting.

For some reason I clearly recall the day that we beat Geelong down at KP in 1985 (Beasley & Bamblett kicked 12.1 between them whilst Ablett kicked 5.8. Andy Bews also kicked goal of the year.)

Anyway, I'm positive that on that day, the U/19s were the curtain raiser and the reserves weren't. I believe Mark Athorn, Matty Hogg and Lachie's dad, Mark Hunter were running around.

So it's a mix of 2 & 3 games played on the day, from memory & I think it was due to ground conditions and the ground sharing that came in.

I also remember going to watch the odd ressies game on a Sunday with just them running around.

Yes good point TD. But still the majority of home games will be at Whitten.
