AFL affiliation is overrated. Williamstown have been the standout team. They tend to recruit more seasoned players with stronger bodies whereas we have a number of young players with developing bodies. Lapinski, Young, Greene and Mullenger-McHugh are great examples.

How do I explain ? Looking at our seniors and VFL side Seeing the same game plan fail in both, to me says it's not the players it's the game plan that's not working.
We had the same list last year and won both flags I find saying it's the players is a more simplistic way of looking at it. Blame the players who won us two premierships and all of a sudden we have a bad list ?
Our players are pumping it into our forward line more than any other team so that tells you they are good enough but our delivery Into it is not right .. Is it the forward coach or the mids coach not connecting, that's where I see something amiss, maybe it is deeper issues ( stringer , players unhappy ? ) I don't know that side of it.

I'm not so upset about today's game in isolation. If everything else was going away, today could easily be seen as a positive sign of the feature. Lots of injuries before and during the game, really hammered by the end.

Really, really liked Williams and Lipsinki's game. They are going to (hopefully) bring much needed class to the team.

You could make this argument for the seniors but we have already established that the Footscray list is significantly different.

Stringer was at the game . So this disunity b/s is just that .
Lots of players there, and it's time people stopped listening to the outside noise.
If the club was so big on winning a vfl flag , they would have delayed post season surgeries on the likes of English.
I'm disappointed in our afl season , and see the vfl being used to develop our lads ready for afl . Winning and making finals is important, but development is more important

Funny story; we were standing near the group of players, and saw a guy go up to Morris, shake his hand, and say "thanks for a great career Boydy". The players were all laughing their heads off, and Dale said "I usually get it, but he's ******* out there today!".

VFL REPORT: In a see-sawing contest a late Port Melbourne charge has seen Footscray fall short in their VFL semi final.

Port finish Footscray's season in the semi
                            September 10, 2017 5:34 PM

In an enthralling see-sawing contest at Fortburn Stadium, Footscray have been denied a place in their third preliminary final in four seasons by Port Melbourne.

With seven lead changes throughout the afternoon, Footscray inevitably fell 20-points short of Port Melbourne, going down 12.15 (87) to 16.11 (107).

It was a tight contest from the get go, with Port Melbourne holding the lead at every change except quarter time.

The opportunities were there for the Dogs but inaccuracy hurt them on the scoreboard, kicking 15 points, six of those in the third quarter through a period of ascendancy.

It wasn’t until the final quarter that Port Melbourne cemented their lead, kicking five goals to Footscray’s three.

Patrick Lipinski was prominent for Footscray kicking two goals and finishing with 25 disposals, with Lukas Webb and Bailey Williams also named among the ‘Scray’s best.

Footscray had the edge early in the first with goals from Billy Gowers, Tate Short and Bailey Williams to skip away to a 16-point lead.

Port settled to kick three of the last four goals of the opening term to narrow Footscray’s advantage to three points at quarter time.

Clay Smith started the second quarter for the Dogs with an early goal to stretch the visitors lead, but that’s where the goals stopped for Footscray.

The Dogs had asserted their authority on the clearance and inside 50m count, but only had five behinds to show for it.

Port kicked four majors in response to move into the lead and hold a seven point margin at the main break.

An early goal from Lukas Webb got the momentum going for the Dogs in the third term, backed-up by a strong contested grab and goal from Patrick Lipinski, to put the ‘Scray back in the lead.

Port once again finished the quarter in strong fashion, kicking three late goals to set them up with a 10-point lead at the final change.

The ‘Borough got the jump on Footscray in the final term with a goal straight from the first bounce.

Nick Jamieson and Liam Nash replied in kind for Footscray but Port would not yield.

Port went on to score another three goals to see them head into a preliminary final against minor premiers Williamstown next weekend.

                            Footscray Bulldogs 5.2 (32) 7.7 (49) 9.11 (65) 12.15 (87)

                            Port Melbourne 4.5 (29) 8.8 (56) 11.9 (75) 16.11 (107)

Two stand alone teams in one pre Lim and two AfL teams in the other, shows that both can work on field it's just that AFL sides have money to survive.
I wonder if the VFL is wanting it to be all AFL affiliated or if not they should put money into the VFL stand alone teams as some sort of equalisation.
I believe Frankston is back next year and they are trying to keep Ballarat going.
