      Re: Round 11 - 2018 Footscray Bulldogs v Coburg

Thought I'd put in my thoughts about the game as they differ a bit to those I have read.

It was a lovely sunny day, no rain all afternoon, but it was bit cold. First we went to Henry Turner Reserve to watch the VFL women. It was great, they kicked a heap of goals in the first quarter and ended up winning their first game. It is a lovely place to visit with the admin people there giving out free samozas and mini spring rolls. Yum!

At the Coburg ground the players were wearing our white strip with Young wearing long sleeves. The wind didn't seem to be very strong and I couldn't tell in which direction it was blowing.

Fletcher Roberts kicked the first two scores with Fergus Greene chipping in two goals for the quarter. At the start of the second quarter Marcus Adams went forward and kicked a goal from out of the air, less than a meter out. Did he get it, yes he did. He had a set shot for goal later on but missed.

By three quarter time we were far enough in front to be confident of winning. Then at the start of the last quarter Prudden kicked two within two minutes, then the hyphen men kicked a goal each and we were well in front. Then in a similar fashion to what had been happening in the last month or so we fell apart with Coburg over-running us.

Coburg got the last 5 goals of the game. In the previous match against Essendon - they outscored us in the last quarter. Prior to that Collingwood scored 8 goals to our one in the last quarter to take the match, prior to that Werribee scored the last 8 goals of the match to almost win it. Something is wrong here. You can also apply this to the AFL side.

There were a lot of AFL players at the match and I had the pleasure of sitting next to a few of them and having a chat. I saw Lipinski, JJ, Naughton, English, Crozier, Wood, Richards, Bontempelli, Hunter, Williams, Schache, Biggs, Dahlhaus, Morris and Redpath. The first time in ages that I had not seen Mitch Wallis and Tom Boyd (but they may have been there). Also saw all of the senior coaches that are easy to recognise and the coach of the women's team turned up later too. Normally I see Bev, but I didn't see him this time. The Bont was posing for pics with some supporters.

Here is my summary on various players.

      My Best. Hayes, William, Young.

      2. Lewis Young
Played in the backline and along the wing. You could often see him rising high above the packs and punching away the ball. Also he went for a run along the wing. Great second efforts. He had 13 kicks of which 10 were effective. He is improving his disposal and decision making. I wish that they would play him as a forward. Could be recalled for the seniors.

      5. Josh Dunkley
He played in the midfield and laid 9 tackles, trying very hard. His kicks however mostly inneffective and some of his handballs went astray. He missed two gettable shots at goal. Was not really noticeable. Needs to improve.

      15. Tom Campbell.
He enjoyed some good ruckwork and effective tap outs. Not as good as his previous few matches. Got a good goal. Gave away a 50 meter penalty. Good game over-all.

      18. Fletcher Roberts
He was played up forward early on. He didn't get a lot of the ball. Kicked a goal early but couldn't take a mark later on.

      30. Fergus Greene
Showed some agility early on and finished with 2 goals 2 behinds. Not AFL quality yet.

      46. Lin Jong
Tried hard. Kicks were mostly ineffective. Should stay in the VFL.

      25. Marcus Adams
In the forward line early on and had some influence. Looks like a confident player. Working himself into form. Possible call up.

      40. Nathan Mullenger-Mchugh
Did some nice things from time-to-time. He is slowly improving but I don't know if the gradual improvement is just too gradual to save him from the chop.

      36. Brad Lynch
Never has seemed to do enough and ditto for this game. Maybe he is annoyed that his profile is not on the WB website.

      28. Cal Porter
Lightly built young lad. He has the same sort of build as Tony McGUINNESS. Took a nice contested mark. Played as a mid-fielder. Can mix it with the tough stuff. Has to get into the play more.

      32. Kieran Collins
Showing gradual improvement after a long time out. May have damaged his finger.

      23. Jordan Roughead
OK but not back to his best. Did some good ruck work.

      56. Will Hayes
A lightly build but nuggety mid-fielder, 181 cms and 23 years old. Has a ripping good go. A good ball-winner and user enjoying his best season. He and his twin brother started with the club a few years ago. His brother quit last year. Will Hayes is better than Honeychurch, Jong, Porter, Gowers, Roarke Smith, Brad Lynch, and Fergus Greene. If it were possible you would put him into the senior side.

      57. Lachlan Smith
I wonder about this guy. Does some nice things but at 25 years of age he has probably passed it.

      54. Reuben William
20 years old and 183 cms. For the last couple of years he was on the Brisbane Lions rookie list. He has good endurance, is courageous, is fast and can seriously play. If he was on the senior list you would give him a game in the AFL. Is on much the same level as Will Hayes but you have the feeling that he can do even better. Still a chance to get redrafted.

He ia a black guy who immigrated with his family to Australia to escape a war-torn South Sudan when he was five.

Here is what the Brisbane Lions wrote about him:

An attacking half-back, William is a product of the Club’s successful Hyundai Help for Kids Lions Academy and played for the club's reserves in the NEAFL in 2015. The medium-sized defender was also integral to Queensland's effort to win the second division title in the 2015 NAB AFL U18 Championships.

William averaged 17 disposals (seven contested) in three games and was named in Queensland's best players each time, including second-best in the final against NSW/ACT. He was perhaps unlucky not to make the All Australian team.

William also represented Queensland in five TAC Cup games, averaging 18.6 possessions, with a best effort of 28 disposals against top team North Ballarat at Eureka Stadium. He's quick, evasive, has good ball skills, takes the game on, is hard at it and a strong tackler.

      • William made his debut against Gold Coast in round 16, and wasn’t overawed by the AFL experience as he finished with 13 disposals, three tackles and two defensive rebounds across half-back.

      • The young defender displayed great pace and attack on the ball in his three senior games and will look to build his aerobic capacity and disposal efficiency as he looks toward the pre-season and more senior games in 2017.

Thanks for the detailed report JC. I really enjoyed reading it.

I agree about Rueben William, if he was AFL listed he would be playing this week. I really hope we draft him because he has a set of skills to offer that we really could do with, he is like a straight kicking Billy Gowers.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Thanks James, great review. Particularly liked your comments on Young. I remain a believer that he is going to be a very good AFL player. Sounds like he is working on hi deficiencies - very encouraging.

Loved his debut. Good signs from the reports. He is building. Will see how he goes again on Saturday as I'm planning to go in earlier to catch the Footscray VFL at Etihad before the main game.
