Back to Ben Cavarra, I personally think he is a better option than Rueben William as an able bodied pick up from the VFL (if Hayes is not available).

See his highlights from a couple of years ago playing for Frankston here (number 14)
There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.

I’m interested in others thoughts on drafting kids from interstate?

It seems to me FA has setup a system where the draft becomes irrelevant as there is a risk players won’t make it at AFL level. Whether homesickness is an excuse or a genuine reason, it is used a lot in young and proven AFL players leaving the club they were drafted into - offer for more high picks in a draft.

Sure we’re going to have to fight to hold onto Naughton, I think where there is smoke there’s fire with English and I’m convinced the crows will go hard at Bailey Williams.

Is it worth it? Is best available the approach?

Re: 2018 Draft - Players linked to Bulldogs

I'm not too concerned about the go home factor.

This year we have seen a bunch of players head "home", but I'm not convinced the vast majority of them would have gone if not for other factors.

Conca, Setterfield, Scrimshaw, Stengle, Mayes and Newman were fringe players at best and their moves are just as much for opportunity as a return home. Besides in most if not all cases their clubs would have been happy to move them on to free up cap and list space.

Lynch was at a shit club and offered a good role at a good club.

Hannebery was offered an excellent deal, Scully was mutually pushed out, Dahlhaus was let go.

Lycett probably falls under the go home factor, but was also offered more money i think. Rohan definitely falls under the go home category but with extenuating personal circumstances and an ill defined role in the Swans team going forward. Hogan was go home but due to personal circumstances. Lobb was genuine go home. Colyer was go home but may see more opportunity. Shiel came home but that felt like a combo of GWS needing space and Shiel seeing an opportunity to be a main man,

I do think it is an easier sell being able to tell a player that we see a role for you, we will offer you more opportunity and you will get to come home which may help you improve, but I think the first two points are necessary for any trade while the last one is more a bonus point. For that reason I think home state clubs also keep tabs on you and position themselves as the first port of call should a player have doubts about their role going forward/earning potential/just want a change off field.

So really to me it would seem the vast majority of players that go home do so because they were looking for a change anyway. Very few players in genuinely good teams leave to purely go home.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

In his Presser when he announced he was going to Geelong someone (I don't think it was Dahlhaus, it might have been Dangerfield) said that he was looking forward to "coming home to Geelong"
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

The go home factor hasn't really been an issue for us for other SA players, at least not since Kym Koster. Cooney & Lake moved to Vic clubs and Griff went to Hades. Luke Darcy still lives in Melbourne and Monty came back to us after going to Port.
Even Adams went to Brisbane instead of WA.

Relationships seem to mean more than the pull of a home state.

Cal Twomey has linked us to

Fraser Turner from Allies/Tasmania - an attacking winger who can kick goals

Harry Reynolds from Sandy Dragons/Brighton grammar - tall running defender/midfielder

Twomey now linking us to Butters & O'Halloran if we become involved in a live trade selling off pick 7 for a couple of later picks

Both Bulldog supporting players from the Jets with great attitude and focus on their football.

I've been impressed by both but particularly the leadership skills of O'Halloran
