Pick 24 - Adelaide trade for our Pick 30 (also give them 2019 Hawks 3rd for their 4th - very similar to Syd/wce deals)
Pick 25 - Sydney will use
Pick 26 - Melbourne rumoured to nominate West here. Our pick 35 matches the bid, except 10 mere points. Won’t effect pick 42.

We get 24 as a live pick, then help get West to 26 meaning only 35 gets soaked up, then 42 & 57 for Khamis and another.

But we won’t know until tomorrow the exact way we can use the system.
As you say we won’t know until tomorrow night.

Hopefully Adelaide places a bid on Kelly at 24, with Collingwood matching, pushing things out again (although that alone leaves us 4 points short). Hopefully Melbourne do us a favour and don’t bid on West.

One thing I’m still trying to understand is why Sydney didn’t have to use Pick 24s points, that they acquired from WCE in the swap, to part cover Blakey’s price.

Just for detail, the WCE/Sydney deal was Picks 25/29 and 2019 swaps 2nd & 3rd.
My hypothetical deal would be Picks 24/30 and 2019 swaps 3rd & 4th (lower as our picks will be better, could be forced to do lower if we loved someone at 24 this year and Kellett/Libba are moderate points options next year)

Because they flicked 26 to West Coast, then received and matched the bid on Blakey using their remaining picks in the 30s, then traded pick 24 in after Blakey was already theirs. They couldn't use it to match because they didn't own it.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Ooh so it was done as two separate trades.

Pre Blakey selection (just prior to pick 7):

            Swans: Pick 26 to WCE
            WCE: Future 3rd to Swans

            Post Blakey selection:

            WCE: Pick 24 to Swans
            Swans: Future 2nd to WCE

            Makes sense

Assuming Melbourne is our only serious threat to keeping our next live pick, and given that they know that we will match at this stage, maybe we should work a swap with Melbourne that is enticing to them.

Say after pick 25 we live trade for Melbourne’s Pick 26.

Melb: Pick 26 to Dogs (which we use immediately, possibly Curtis Taylor)
              Dogs: Pick 42 to Melb

              After pick 29:
              Dogs: Pick 30 to Melb
              Melb: Pick 49 to Dogs

We may need to throw in more of a sweetener involving future 3rd swaps.

                Adelaide: 24 & our 35, 42 & 57 (swaps of 2019)
Melbourne: 26, our 35, their 49 & 57 (swaps of 2019) and Melbourne are free to use pick 30 on him if he's still on the board meaning 35 is gone anyway.

I don't see West getting passed 35 so that pick is going on him. In the Adelaide option we lock in our win at a better pick and hopefully don't lose out on moving 42 for any impact on Khamis. Neither are bad options, but I'd hope to target Adelaide if WCE take Hill. Adelaide already have 8, 13 & 16 with Pick 1 next year. An extra bump up a round in 2019 in doing this trade strengthens their rebuilding efforts for little actual cost to them. So they may be a willing partner.

Surely there comes a time one day when clubs line up a gentleman’s agreement and one of the clubs pull out after the first trade. Seems very risky to trade for unders with the trust they’ll trade back for unders later.

Likely St Kilda will be the team that torches another.

Essendon say “hello”. I think Dodoro has been looking for this sort of opportunity to level up to an even worse bloke to deal with.

We might only get this year to exploit it. Can see HQ shutting it down from next year.
