    New talent arrives at Footscray

    Link

The Footscray Bulldogs have added further talent to its VFL list, recruiting eleven new players ahead of the 2019 VFL season.

Looking to add further experience to the VFL side, the Bulldogs have recruited former AFL listed players Nathan Drummond (Richmond), Ryan Gardner (Geelong) and Dillon Viojo-Rainbow (Carlton), alongside a talented crop of young recruits.

Taken at pick 52 in the 2014 national draft, Drummond arrives at the Club after four years at Richmond. A talented and versatile midfielder, the 23-year-old was unfortunately hampered by injury during his time at the Tigers, but managed five senior appearances since 2015.

A developing key defender with the ability to swing forward, Gardner enjoyed an impressive 2018 season for Geelong’s VFL side, with a standout six-goal performance against the Northern Blues in Round 9.

Former Port Melbourne premiership defender Viojo-Rainbow will also wear the red, white and blue in 2019. Selected by Carlton with pick 28 in the 2014 national draft, Viojo-Rainbow went on to play state league football with Port Melbourne for the past two seasons.

The Club has also recruited a talented group of young players, including Sam Barnett and Lachlan Farrugia, while St Kevin’s players Billy Kanakis and Gerard Gleeson arrive at the Club after back-to-back VAFA premierships.

Old Trinity midfielder Anthony Scott will also join the ‘Scray after being named runner-up in the 2018 VAFA Best and Fairest count.

The Club has also retained nine key players from the 2018 season, including co-captain Josh Prudden, Reuben William, Liam Nash, Josh Wallis, Robbie McComb, Brad Olsson, Tate Short, Lachlan Sullivan and Cody Henness.

Daniel Giansiracusa will take the coaching reigns at Footscray in 2019, with Steve Grace moving into an AFL line-coaching role.

    2019 Footscray VFL recruits:

    Nathan Drummond
    Ryan Gardner
    Dillon Viojo-Rainbow
    Anthony Scott
    Gerard Gleeson
    Billy Kanakis

Anthony Scott is interesting. St Kilda and Dogs both interviewed him for the drafts, but both of us passed. Now he signs at Footscray under a much closer dogs eye and hopefully coaching to address some weaknesses. One to watch closely next year.

Lists aren't finalised until mid Feb.

edit: The excellent VitalDread over on bigfooty had this as our departures. It's a shame to see Smith and Tashevski-Beckwitch go and I'm pretty sure that Monfries has probably retired.

              Further to the above

              Footscray confirm 2019 VFL list

The Footscray Bulldogs have confirmed their VFL list for the 2019 Hard Yakka/Totally Workwear VFL season.

Adding JD Hayes, Jonah Siverson, Oliver Jackson, Austin Hodge and Aaron Trusler over the latter half of the pre-season, the ‘Scray will to head into the final practice match with all list positions filled.

Former Footscray defender JD Hayes returns to VU Whitten Oval after two years as captain-coach with Euroa. Twin brother of Western Bulldogs recruit Will Hayes, the left footed midfielder holds impressive defensive skills and great endurance.

After a dominant performance in the Dogs’ final VFL game of 2018, Austin Hodge has also been added to the list. Recruited from Gippsland Power’s TAC Cup side, Hodge is a versatile medium-sized defender, who can also play through the midfield.

Developing defender Jonah Siverson has made an impact across the summer, showing encouraging signs during the Club’s practice matches. A hard-working and determined defender, Siverson has shown consistent improvement across all aspects of his game throughout the pre-season.

The new-look Footscray side will run out against Williamstown, this Saturday at 1pm at VU Whitten Oval, in their final pre-season match.

Footscray will open their season against Sandringham at VU Whitten Oval on Friday April 5th at 7pm.

Viojo-Rainbow is an interesting one, I remember him being talked up in his draft year.

Re: New talent arrives at Footscray

Sent a tweet to the football club the other day asking them why the VFL page on the AFL website hadn't been updated with 2019 VFL player profiles and noticed today this has now been updated.

What surprised me the most was their initial response. Verbatim they advised: "Hi (sic) Thanks for feedback - apologies for this. We will pass it onto our digital team and look to have this updated"

How could no-one not realise earlier in the season the web page made reference to our 2018 VFL team and not our 2019 team!

Anyway, much happier now that we have better info about this year's playing list! It will make it easier on match days to identify players.
