This is the most I've seen of Porter. If he's not delisted I will be surprised. Most pick 70's don't make it, but he looks a rung under the VFL players.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Lynch with foot speed and great execution. Would be nice to have that in the seniors.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Easily the best passage of the game for Footscray. Nice to see Lynch, Khamis and West involved. Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.Comment

Campbell Brown observing what I've been saying about our talls. That is, they get shit delivery so don't judge them on stats alone.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

I'm not looking at stats with Schache BT but his first and second efforts are lacking.Comment

My thoughts on the game....
Firstly, Williamstown were better opposition than Collingwood/Sandy so we were always going to be up for it.
Sweet (susp) and Gardner (not sure why he was out) not playing meant Le Young had to play in the Ruck which meant he wasn't able to play his normal back line role (and which may not have helped his cause for senior elevation). With Williamstown's ruckman being quite experienced and strong (he's been going around for a few years now), he was always on a hiding to nothing, though I thought his last qtr effort in the ruck was much better than his first three quarters. Boyd equally struggled although he was taller than Williamstown's main ruckman.
Also not playing were VFL players Lachlan Sullivan and Josh Wallis (they were sitting in front of me at the ground) and we lacked their midfield nous in this game.
Roarke Smith was also not playing as he must have been the emergency for the AFL game (which is an interesting selection in itself!)
We had 5 players in the team for the first time this season - Khamis, Vandermeer and Cavarra along with Gleeson (58) and Barnett (60), so all these changes would have impacted on any 'chemistry' developed in the first 2 rounds.
I agree with some previous posts in this thread that no player put his hand up for AFL selection (Bevo and King arrived around halftime at the ground). Lipinski, Dale, Webb and Lynch were all made to look quite ordinary by their stronger Wiliamstown opponents. Schache had a mare up forward. Went to ground too many times for my liking.
Someone has asked why Cavarra was not played forward - he was for the first half but couldn't get into the game (ball delivery didn't help), so he was given a full field roving role in the 3rd term which would have seen him down back given the amount of time in this qtr the ball was parked on Williamstown's half forward flank (that was 20 minutes I'll never get back...).
My best was Rueben William across half back who kept us in the game during the middle terms before Williamstown opened us up in the last. Of the AFL listed players, I thought West battled hard and that was about it....
From a 'good to see' perspective, Boyd playing out the full game, Vandermeer playing a full game (and taking it on a couple of times) and Le Young's last qtr effort in the ruck. Special mention to Khamis who looked lost in the first qtr, but grew in confidence as the game progressed to take a few grabs.
Bailey Williams must have been injured at some stage as I don't remember seeing him much in the second half - someone watching the TV broadcast might know more. There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.
