3 QT Dogs 7.9 to Pies 7.8. Gardner played some of that qtr down back. Hayes pretty quiet today. Young grabbed a few more marks/kicks that qtr. Pretty ordinary game from both teams - needs someone to break it open

Likely game over now after a long range goal to Pies. Pies 12.9 to Dogs 8.10 after 23 mins.

                          Re: Round 12 – 2019 -Footscray Bulldogs v Collingwood

Thoughts on yesterday's game, with some things to note first up...

Most Woofers would be aware McLean didn't end up playing VFL being the emergency for the main match. Also Lynch didn't play nor did the VFL captain in Prudden, who has consistently been amongst the better VFL players offering both leadership and drive off half back, and this is where I thought the game was lost - with Lynch and Prudden not playing, Roarke in the seniors and William playing forward, there was a lack of drive off half back/wing which has been a strength of the VFL side this season.

With a number of outs, there was a higher than normal number of VFL players this week and would have added to the challenge of getting consistent team work happening for the match.

That said, the team did well for 3 quarters until the last 30 mins which in my opinion was due to a lack of on-field leadership over this time. At three quarter time, the game was really calling out for someone to take the game on and unfortunately Collingwood answered the call.

Overall the match was a fairly 'scratchy' affair until Collingwood broke it open in the last, so there wasn't any real stand out performances from any Bulldog's AFL listed players in my opinion.

I note checking the stats after the game that West had the most touches, but a lot were ineffectual and this is probably supported by the fact he wasn't noted in the best players on the Bulldog's website. There's no doubting his endeavour but his possessions lacked a bit of polish yesterday.

Reading thru other threads, there is huge support for Lewis Young to get a run in the seniors. As with West, he did get his fair share of possessions and took a number of marks - many would have been uncontested however. I'm still to be convinced he is 'strong' enough for a KP role, he tends to panic a bit when involved in chasing down a contested ball situation - he can easily muck things up and I think there would be that added pressure at AFL level that he may not yet be suited to.

This is my opinion however and I would be interested in other VFL watchers who have seen his games this year and how they would rate his chances of a call up.

                          Other AFL listed player performances:
Dale - thought he would have been more active than he was - seems to be a front runner and if he misses out in a contest, there is no second effort
Vandermeer - quiet game - he didn't play last week from what I can make out, so might have been eased into this game
Sweet - lumbered thru the game and did a couple of things you would want from a big bodied person, but has a long way to go
Roberts - lost on the forward line, better when shifted back in second half
La Young and Hayes - both flashed in/out of play. This was probably the least effective game I have seen from Hayes in three years.
Khamis - best game by far - probably helped that for the first half, he (and Young x 2) had to hold the half back line together with so many missing regular players
Porter - didn't get the ball as much as West and can spray the ball at times, but can't fault his endeavour. Would be interesting to see how he would go with a strong/taller group of midfielders around him. Works hard off the ball which is a good attribute to have in the midfield role he played yesterday.
Cavarra - seen glimpses yesterday of what the recruiting staff must have seen when he was playing for W/town. Good to see him get out and have a full game. Promising.
Gardner - as with Dale, I thought he would have worked a bit harder after his demotion - he has played better (and did so when we played Collingwood VFL earlier this year). During the afternoon he was thrown around the ground a bit including ruck, so that mightn't have helped his confidence.

                          My thoughts only....
