So glad you did updates Smads-wind factor made me reluctant to take my gloves off to play keyboard warrior!! Said 17c on scoreboard but felt much colder with that wicked wind.
I reckon we won game in 3rd by stopping their goals despite big wind adv. to them (& in 2nd to come back from 6 goals down albeit a mighty strong wind their way in 1st). Gia is a damn good coach based upon results so far and ability to turn things around eg this and last week.
Players that imo played well-Lance Young (took some good grabs and leaping high for defensive punches-reminds me of crozier or a younger wood with a much better kick), Porter earlier however had at least 2 to 3 HTB in last qtr and half so was better earlier and with West out was quite crucial at stoppages and in centre, Williams pretty classy although a dumb kick close to end game across ground into wind when we had v strong wind, really liked Cavarra (again)-crafty and a number of goal assists as well as a few sneaky goals himself, Webb was better as game progressed, Trengove did ok in a day not good for big guys, Gowers good sometimes and wasteful others-reported for a sling tackle that did stun the player that I thought warranted free but not report-you would see a few every afl round and none or very few reported (a few mins after umps missed one near centre) and one of those guys who is so physical as to be a bit scary however I personally think he would be better to channel that aggression into focusing on team play and not so much tough guy stuff. Thought Josh Wallis and Prudden were mostly composed & classy with their disposal too. Prudden appears to be a good captain. Sweet competed & rucked ok without screaming pick me-a rough work in progress that might pay off. Pity about Scott-not his best day today but has been a good finisher for us so sad he will miss presumably all or most of finals with hammy.
Smads & others that attended-Did I miss anyone that played well? Any different opinion of Gowers? He tends to miss some dead set sitters albeit in very very difficult conditions.
Josie :)
Our day will come
And we'll have everything.
We'll share the joy
Just like '54 again.
The Footscray Bulldogs have all-but locked in top-two position and a home final after defeating the Coburg Lions by 35 points at VU Whitten Oval in the final VFL home and away round on Saturday afternoon.
Led by Bailey Williams (32 disposals) and Billy Gowers (three goals), Footscray overcame an early deficit, controlling the match after quarter time to notch its eighth straight win.
After the Lions kicked the first seven majors of the match, the ‘Scray charged back on the back of Gowers’ three majors for the second term.
At the main break it was a one-point ball game, and the Bulldogs booted seven goals to three in the second half to secure the four points.
Defender Bailey Williams was superb across half back, taking seven marks and laying three tackles, with Callum Porter (25 disposals, seven tackles) and Josh Wallis (24 disposals, two goals) prolific in the midfield.
Small forward Ben Cavarra became a destructive force in the second half, applying intense pressure to finish with six tackles and two crucial goals, as well as gathering 18 disposals.
Yet again, Lukas Webb was able to step up in the final moments, managing to boot two massive last quarter goals to extend the lead and solidify the victory.
Footscray is likely to play Williamstown in the first week of the finals at VU Whitten Oval. Match details will be finalised in the coming days.
Week 1 of the finals has been announced, 1pm start on Saturday at Whitten Oval. Won't be televised because the VFL only broadcasts the two games at North Port.
