I tried to start a new thread, but got a 403 error. So this is the best I can do: (Ive got your back BT! Thread started)

Pick 13 is best available, no brainer. Pick 89 will be La Young upgraded. So we have one real question mark on what to do with a mid-late pick at Pick 53?

Do we want another kid to develop away while Pick 13 and next year's priority listed players probably overtake him? If so, on needs, or best available?

Or do we want to bring in a ready to play player either from the AFEL system or a state league? If so, on needs or best available? Do we want ruck insurance in this scenario?

So,

A) Kid, best available at Pick 53 (inc. Josh Kellett who doesn't appear on the draft radar)
B) Kid, needs based selection (probably small forward)
C) Younger delisted player assuming they don't go DFA (ie. Cody Hirst, Zach Sproule, Sam Skinner, Sam Murray, Ben Keays etc)
D) Mature delisted player assuming they don't go DFA (ie Lachie Henderson, Jacob Townsend etc)
E) State Leaguee mature player (ie Ben Sokol WAFL, or current Footscray player)

Taking into account the possible outs in 2020, does that impact our choices for Pick 53 this year?

Main List Outs From: (1) Jong, (2) Lynch, (3) Porter, (4) Greene, (5) Gowers, (6) Cavarra & likely retired (7) Dickson & (8) Suckling.
Rookie List Outs From: (1) Roarke (2) Gardner

Likely Ins: Ugle-Hagan (forward), Stevens (mid), Raak (defender), MacPherson (mid)

Possible 2020 outs off the min list by position:

Mids: Jong, Porter, Rorke (Raak)
Def: Suckling, Lynch (Stevens, MacPherson)
For: Dickson, Greene, Cavarra, Gowers, Gardner (JUH)

We seem to be possibly losing a fair bit of experience, and possibly a bit forward.

For me, if Pick 13 lands us Weightman (small forward) or Bergman (winger/half forward) and I like our 4 kids heading into next year's draft plus maybe another one or two. I'm hoping we target Zac Willims as a free agent year with the Martin Man to bring in ready to impact talent.

I believe our window is opening next year and I think it should be a solid 5 year window, or more looking at our demographics. With B. Smith, West, La Young, Khamis, Naughton, Schache, Dunkley, Lippa, Le Young etc, etc, we have plenty of kids. So I tend to lean towards looking at a mature player. Current names could include:

Forward: Cody Hirst (HF), Ben Sokol (WAFL) (HF, Dicko type from MJP), Aidyn Johnson (HF, Vic Country teammate of Schache)
Defender: Zach Sproule (Turned into KPD), Sam Skinner (KPD, talent but injury prone), Lachie Henderson (KPD, maybe two years in him)

Anthony Scott from Footscray at 53 if not a couple of young ones if they slip through like Comben/Ruck or Phillips/mid forward, for example

TWO AFL clubs have expressed interest in former VFL midfielder Anthony Scott after a stellar season with Old Trinity in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA).

AFL.com.au understands Western Bulldogs and St Kilda have enquired about the mature-aged left-footer.

The 23-year-old is set to meet the Bulldogs next week, while his management has been in talks with the Saints' newly appointed list manager James Gallagher.

Scott played eight games in the TAC Cup for Oakleigh Chargers in 2013, before earning the VAFA Rising Star award the following year and a position on Richmond's VFL list ahead of 2015.

So far, it has been a case of poor timing for Scott.

His three seasons in the VFL system coincided with Richmond's tilt towards its prized 2017 flag, and was compounded by an enviously small Tigers' injury list.

Scott was forced to play out of position and was given minimal opportunities to showcase his class in the midfield.

His decision to return to the VAFA has kept alive his hopes of an AFL career.

Melbourne forward Mitch Hannan has gone from a VAFA grand final best-on-ground performance in 2015 to becoming an integral part of the Dees' forward 50.

Ben Ronke and Rupert Wills also earned themselves spots on AFL lists after standout VAFA seasons.

Scott represented the VAFA's 'Big V' side and was judged best afield (31 disposals) in the VAFA vs SAAFL (South Australia equivalent) representative game on June 11, and he was invited by Greater Western Sydney to travel north and play a game for the Giants' NEAFL side on June 23.

While he wasn't a standout, Scott's silky foot skills and decision-making were on display during the 40-goal shootout against Brisbane.

On Wednesday night, Scott capped off his prolific season with Old Trinity by finishing runner-up in the 2018 Woodrow Medal – awarded to the best and fairest player in the VAFA's premier division – four votes behind former Western Bulldogs utility Ayce Cordy.

The B&F this year:


Anthony Scott has capped off an outstanding first year in red, white and blue, winning the 2019 Footscray Bulldogs’ Best and Fairest.

Scott played every game for the ‘Scray during the home and away season, before suffering a hamstring injury during the Round 21 clash with Coburg.

The former Old Trinity midfielder enjoyed a solid first year at the Club, where he booted 19 goals and averaged 16 disposals per game.

He finished the season with an impressive 105 votes, edging out captain Josh Prudden by a solitary vote.

Western Bulldogs defender Bailey Williams rounded out the top three with 91 votes, despite only playing 12 VFL games for the season.

Footscray leader Josh Wallis, brother of AFL star Mitch, received the Coaches Award for his solid 2019 VFL campaign, where he averaged 19 disposals and four tackles per game.

I had a look at Axe Mans contract thread to see who is coming out of contract in 2020/21 and have broken them up into the following groups to assess how our list management strategy could be affected.

Generational Signing

Marus Bontompelli (2021)

He is the biggest name player coming out of contract in the next 2 years. He is the face of the club, our future captain and you all know the rest. He probably won't re-sign until he has explored all his free agency options in 2021. But whatever we do in 2020 we have to make sure we are in position to hold onto the Bont!


Priority Signings (all 2020)

Bailey Smith, Hayden Crozier, Josh Schache (just re-signed til 2022), Easton Wood

Easton Wood will be 31 at the expiry of his current contract. A decision on the what type of contract Wood should get will no doubt be determined by how he feels at the end of 2020. I suspect it will be a year by year basis from then. I doubt a long term contract comes into it. As club captain, premiership skipper and outstanding statesman of the club as well as being a wonderful & fearless player he is entitled to priority status should his body & form hold up.

The others should all be 3 year deals, although Smith I'd be offering 5 if his 2nd year continues in the same way as his first.

He'd be great, but we have no picks this year unless we're willing to go into a serious 2021 deficit.

I expect he wants to go to a club that can offer him midfield time.

Free agent and by my analysis, I think we have the cap available. I have no problem playing in multiple roles.

My bad.

I'll go a different tack - there is a player available as a FA who fills a position of need, and unlike Williams is a Victorian.

Andrew Gaff. One of the best wings in the competition. Has a get-out clause from year 2 of his 6 year contract. Sits comfortably on the other side of the square with Hunter. May be a little more costly than Williams though.
