List Strategy: Last Pick with an LTI, to grab a SSP or Cat B Elevation: Thoughts?

Scott Clayton used to say (what seemed like) after every draft 'if we didn't draft them with our last pick, they would've gone Top 10 next year' (Steve Tiller and many others). But there could be a more to the general concept (which was some BS then) now with recent changes.

With a couple of years now of the SSP, I wonder if this is now a way clubs are expanding their playing roster at the draft with LTI injured players. Essendon took an LTI injured player (Lachie Johnson), and have the option to get an extra player via an SSP. We took Garcia, an LTI, when placed on the inactive list gives us the option to elevate Khamis onto the main list. Both clubs get a free hit with a late pick of a talented kid and put them on the list, but add in another recruit to SSP Rookie or elevate a Cat B Rookie.

How do you think it fair as a strategy of extending the size of the playing list, bringing in a player who has slid sharply owing to an LTI and bringing in flexibility to the list manager for adding a bonus SSP or Cat B elevation? (2 players for 1 National Draft pick)

On the flip side, at the end of the following season there's going to be 5 Cat A Rookies so there needs to be a freeing up of one spot/player. But that shouldn't be a massive problem. Plus, if the injured player drafted doesn't make it, whilst bringing immediate flexibility, it ties up a main list spot for several years.

I don't think it can be responsibly done every draft, but it seems a legitimate draft/list management option from time to time. Thoughts on the strategy?

It's not something that you could do every year and it's not even a tactic that is going to come off every time but if you have the extra list spot that you don't really have any plans for then it's something you'd be mad not to do.

It's like a free kick if you can organize it.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Since Garcia is a LTI, why not?

Who are the likely candidates? Do we aim to fill a need?

I'd guess Khamis gets elevated into a Cat A spot (so he's eligible for senior selection), than us chase an SSP.

Have we announced we would do this?
It's worth noting that if we're worried about list spots for next year, we only need to offer a one year contract to mature agers.

Sam Power doesnt seem to announce these things going on the last 12 months. He just needs to tell the AFEL. It makes sense as Garcia would be back around August, if at all. Khamis gets the chance to put qfood form together to earn a debut.

Slight side step - any idea why we bothered trading down 4 spots to nab Garcia BT?

My uneducated guess - we want pace around the ball and will hope like hell one of Garcia or Vandermeer make it. They're both 'zippy'

Thanks. Still astonished by the moves tbh - it was effectively 2 draft spots...

No. But I like the concept generally, especially with Khamis able to be elevated while Garcia is out. A nice massage of the rules.

BT, if the playing list is reduced from 44 to 38, perhaps even lower if there is no state league competitions, I'd be very interested in hearing which players you would consider the most likely to be cut?

Certainly players coming out of contract and marginal players would be the most likely.

So, 9 overall delistings across the primary and rookie lists, making room for JUH, Raak & Macca. Tough ask.

                            1. Suckling (ret)
                            2. Dickson (ret)
                            3. Gardner
                            4. Roarke or Hayes
                            5. Wallis (trade - Free Agent in 2021, worth more now as a known product in a trade)
                            6. Gowers
                            7. Libba (trade - Free Agent in 2021, worth more now as a known product in a trade)
                            8. Jong
                            9. Porter or Lynch

Lipinski & McLean to fill the void once filled by Wallis & Libba. Inside mids still have good numbers and depth: Bonts, Macrae, Dunkley, Lippa, McLean, Smith, West, Macca (8). Wingers from Hunter, Richards and Roarke/Hayes.

Dickson & Gowers. Replaced by Weightman, with Cavarra, Lloyd & Dale. Talls being JUH, Naughton, Schache & Bruce.

Suckling is covered by our many HBFs. Gardner gets covered by Le Young, Raak & Trengove, with Keath & Cordy and our flankers.

Actually, it's not that hard if you can make calls on Libba & Wallis. The list looks stronger with the three draftees and depth players cut.
