Re: 2020 draft could be posponed
If there was to be a compromise - and I don't think that is possible as things stand right now - there would need to be a schools system conducted outside of the current Term 2+ Term 3 'window'. The challenge is, to enable selection in the champs state level programs need to be up and running 'EARLY' - this year for example WA colts would have commenced 2-weeks prior to seniors to support this...it would have also enabled private schools (PSA over here) to participate in up to 6 games prior to the school footy season commencing...that would have been 'something'.
But when in 2019 you have players who are selected to play LEAGUE state level footy running out to play in their school's first 18 instead - there really is something wrong. And it isn't about development of players - it is about winning games for the old boys and that just isn't right. What should I tell her? She's going to ask.Comment

Re: 2020 draft could be posponed
To add some clarity, this is what he said
ON WHAT THE DRAFT WILL LOOK LIKE THIS YEAR …
"I'm very confident that the draft will go ahead. Clearly, there's a possibility that it will be in a different form. But we will need a draft. The draft age is being discussed by working groups. I know there are various views on all of that, but one thing I've heard in the last 24 hours from various people around football – and, again, this is trying to help without being definitive – is that the best 18-year-old kids are walking straight into very good teams and are having an impact straightaway. People are looking for the whole draft class to be more mature, but they certainly don't want to have less access to the best 18-year-olds. Hopefully that gives you a level of direction."
While I agree with the highlighted section he is missing the obvious point that most of the players coming in and are having an impact straight away in the AFL have typically played a full season in the NAB or State competitions and that won't be the case this year
I'm sure there will be a draft this year but I'm not sure it will be anything like previous years especially if playing lists are capped at 35Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

‘I’m why the draft age should be 20’: Former top 10 pick Daniel Gorringe’s harsh self-sledge
You certainly can’t say that Daniel Gorringe has too high an opinion of himself.
The former AFL top ten draft pick believes the draft age needs to be raised to 20 - and he thinks he’s proof of that.
The 200cm Gorringe was picked tenth in the 2010 draft by Gold Coast - one pick before Tom Lynch, and directly behind Josh Caddy, Dyson Heppell and Dion Prestia.
Always prone to a joke on social media, Gorringe leapt into the ongoing AFL draft age debate - with some experts calling for the age to be raised above 18 - with typical self-deprecation.
“Let me be the example of why the minimum draft age should be 20,” he tweeted.
“The Suns just guessed that because I played a good 5 games, was tall and had potential I was going to be a superstar.
“I knew I was going to be terrible. Give recruiters 2 extra years so they don’t draft Gorringes.”
Gorringe played 26 career games, 22 of them in five seasons at Gold Coast, then another four at Carlton before being delisted in 2017.
He is believed to be a contestant on the upcoming season of Big Brother, which has already been filmed.Comment

I hope that sticks, 'Gorringes' as a descriptor for bad draft choices.
I.E. When Dalrymple had his first draft, his first two picks were a couple of Gorringes.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
