Even in previous good times, players sought trades out or free agency to ‘big’ clubs. We have a need for a big KPD and a crumbing forward. Watching the last 10 weeks, have we done enough to become a destination club? I’m not sure we can do much more than to win like we are and play in prime time almost every week.

You're asking if the club who recruited the Pies' best player, the Crows' best defender and the Saints' best forward in two consecutive years are a destination club?- I'm a visionary - Only here to confirm my biases - -

If we can find a KPD and crumbing forward in the Bruce or Keath recruiting mould, I’d be thrilled.
By the way, have we found our small forward in Cody? Not your traditional crumber but he’s been excellent.Comment

Re: Are we attractive enough yet? A destination club?
Yeah, nah. They all had reasons to leave. I’m thinking more the type of player that thinks about nominating us but then picks a big shit club citing ‘big games’ or wanting to play with certain players or other excuses. I’d hope we are selling the club to these types who we want to add to our roster.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Personally I think this is an urban myth that we like to throw out there but is really not the case.Comment

Re: Are we attractive enough yet? A destination club?
Don’t all players ‘have a reason to leave’. I am not sure who else we would be after after from another KPD. Which player is on the market that we would want to attract. Whom are these players that the ‘ big name ‘ clubs have attracted recently - maybe Lynch at Richmond, Cameron at Geelong not many others come to mind.
Personally I think this is an urban myth that we like to throw out there but is really not the case.
Wingard who wanted Hawthorn.
Impey who wanted Hawthorn.
Jack Martin who wanted Carlton.
Nankervis who wanted Richmond.
That’s off the top of my head who rejected us post Premiership.
For other clubs:
Hawthorn: Mitchell, O’Meara, Wingard, Impey
Richmond: Lynch, Prestia, Nankervis, Caddy
Woods: Howe, WHE, Mayne, Adams,
Essendon: (basketcase) Stringer, Smith, Saad (from GCS), Caldwell, Shiel
Carlton: Martin, Saad, Williams, McGovern, several GWS
Geelong: Tuohy, Higgins, Cameron, Dahl, Isaac Smith, Rohan, Dangerfield
The broader point being I’m hoping that unlike after the premiership when we were getting rejected by players who chose clubs on the way down, this time the way we are playing opens up a few more players minds to anything Sam Power might have left with their manager to think about.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Re: Are we attractive enough yet? A destination club?
No, unless we're prepared to pay overs to players to compensate for the lack of exposure or business/ commercial connections we can offer. Given Power and Baines have both talked about not paying overs we're probably going to have to focus on role players and depth players to supplement our core of major play makers, many of whom are elite.
If we jag a premiership or get close it will be easier to do that.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Picking our unique mix seems to work for us. Is Carlton a destination club? Essendon? Maybe financially but it hasn't worked out for them. You don't develop courage by being happy in your relationships every day. Re: Are we attractive enough yet? A destination club?
Carlton have screwed up their list now with overpaying for Williams( who cannot play midfield) and Saad who can't lay a tackle. Maybe also their salary cap, as well. It will be interesting to see what happens with Crisp contract. But they have 3 players eating up over $2 million of salary cap.
Same with Stkilda, good thread going on how they got all these senior players on good coin in Hill, Hanners, Zack Jones, and crouch, but won't help them get to the next premiership.
missing out on the players mentioend above , we were fortunate. They would just be list cloggers.
Wingard who wanted Hawthorn.
Impey who wanted Hawthorn.
Jack Martin who wanted Carlton.
IF we picked up Nankervis, maybe Sweet would not get these opportunities. Be good to get a McGovern, Lever, Sam Day type available, but I think we are covered now with Gardner, and Cordy/Young competing for that .Comment

Re: Are we attractive enough yet? A destination club?
I think there are inherent dangers in attracting SOME of these 'stars' from other clubs when in the end they have essentially chosen financial benefits over football success. We've made it well known that we aren't prepared to pay overs to get someone in as opposed to the likes of Essendon, Carlton, St Kilda etc. The danger with these players is then their motivation. They're motivated more by $$$ than on field success. I don't think we want these types on our team. A lot of the players moving clubs aren't exactly setting the world on fire. I'd much rather a Cody Weightman, Scott, McNeil. Guys who try their guts out than a Wingard, Hill, Saad or Williams who simply want to look flashy and take the cash. We've got the stars already.
Now a KPD would be nice. One of Lever or May would really help us. I remember hearing we were in it for May. Not sure what happened there though.Comment

I think the better question is "do we want to become a destination club?". I'm not sue we want other clubs mercenaries.Comment

Re: Are we attractive enough yet? A destination club?
Free Agents soak up salary cap and we need to spend ours wisely.
I do favour a targetted approach that got us Keath and Bruce, but as soon as they are looking for the highest bidder our job is to merely force up the price for the eventual winner of a bidding war.Life is to be Enjoyed not EnduredComment

The floating fixture may help, we're playing good football and being rewarded with good gametimes.
Dougal Howard would have been nice. I still think a good KPD would help enormously and we should be attractive in that regardWestern Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

Re: Are we attractive enough yet? A destination club?
Hamling we couldn’t keep either.
I’d say our list build strategy has been good and the right kind of players are wanting to come (or in Treloar’s case... we’re ending up with them!). I don’t think we need to chase high profile players. We have loads ourselves. But we could do with keeping those “role” playing defenders on our list.
No reason Gardiner can’t become as good as those other blokes though.Comment
