I thought Shaq was a bit unlucky to be dropped after the Adelaide game, but only a bit. Hopefully he comes back in and plays his role to a high level.
What is actually keeping Schache out of the game ?

Is it the clutch moments we expect him to perform?
    - take that one on one mark ?
    - do the ruck chopout
    - lend a hand in the backline ?
    - nail the 3 out of 3 kicks in front of goal ?

Is it all in his head ?

Is it MC only give him one game and then drop the next ?

We are crying out for an athletic tall who can go with the likes Stanley/Blicavs( as best as possible) last week.

Am I asking too many questions of Josh, like everyone else has ?

Why can't we just play him in one position and see him get actually good at it ?

Laconic types don't appear to thrive under Bevo. More intense but limited types like Roarke Smith will get more of a go.
The onus is clearly on Schache to get real serious about his footy and show he has a passion to perform.
The rest would sort itself out given his talent level.

He played some good roles for us last year as a forward, trained in the back line of the pre-season started the season on a wing and is now playing forward with some decent runs as a ruckman at Footscray. Perhaps this is part of the challenge for him and we either need to settle him down or accept he's a more of a stop gap player for us.

I don't care what any of you say he should be in the seniors to help out Naughton. I'm sick of seeing Naughton being expected to beat 3 opponents and be our only genuine target up forward. Schache is better than Cordy, Khamis, Sweet and JUH. He should be playing.

If I had to provide one factor it would be his pace/power. He's the opposite of an athletic tall imo. He's never been able to gain a yard on an opponent, so doesn't get easy ball. He doesn't shut down space well with chasing. He doesn't push off opponents with much force. His skills are good but he is overly reliant on them to offset his physical limitations, and when the skills don't shine through (eg. that dropped sitter in the goal square earlier in the year), he doesn't offer much to the team.

That said, he is coming into the prime of his physicality, and there have been signs for him in the VFL in recent seasons that he has gained some power - although it hasn't yet translated into the AFL.

I'd still be optimistic about his chances of cementing a spot in the 22, talls generally take time. The exceptions usually seem to be players like Naughton who are supreme athletes.

            Re: VFL Round 11 - Footscray v Geelong - 2022

            VFL player summary: Round 11

Development manager Jamie Maddocks reviews the 13 senior-listed players who featured in Footscray’s five-point win over Geelong last weekend.

            Jamarra Ugle-Hagan
Seven disposals, four tackles, two hitouts

Jamarra has been building nicely over the past couple weeks at VFL level. In this game he continued his strong contest form, gaining separation to win the aerial battle. He got to great positions by fighting hard through extra numbers on many occasions, but wasn’t able to bring in the marks. What really pleased us was his defensive game on the ground – his tackle pressure allowed the ball to stay in our half.

            Hayden Crozier
            28 disposals, 12 marks, eight rebound 50s

Hayden is putting together a very strong block of form at Footscray. His ability to set up well behind the ball is the difference between him and his opponents. He helps the whole team defend, and helps us turn dangerous opposition forays into our counter-attack. His intercept and spoil game was once again very strong.

            Zaine Cordy
11 disposals, six marks, five rebound 50s

Zaine played the whole game in defence this week as we needed more size and experience after some personnel changes. He played 100% game time which his teammates hold in high regard. His ability to have superior positioning on his opponent allowed him to intercept well when the opposition challenged us with their ball movement, while his experience and leadership helps all of the younger players around him.

            Josh Schache
18 disposals, nine marks, five clearances, nine hitouts, five goals

‘Shack’ split his time between playing forward and playing in the ruck. He was able to provide a great focal point for us ahead of the ball, and very reliable in front of goal - making the most of his opportunities. We felt his ruck work is developing really nicely, as he was able to both secure our stoppage at times and also exploit his opposition on the spread away.

            Louis Butler
25 disposals, five tackles, 10 inside 50s, one goal

Louis played both on the wing and forward on Friday night. His ability to get up and down the ground with his big tank allowed him to get to plenty of contests, and impact positively for us. Butts is always working on his ability to hurt the opposition with his skills - which we are seeing come to the fore now.

            Charlie Parker
12 disposals, five marks, five tackles

Charlie came out of the game at half time, which was a real shame as he was having his best performance since being drafted to the Club. He was strong in the aerial and ground contests - which he has been working on – while his ability to help us find dangerous avenues forward with the ball was also on show. He’ll be working hard to get back as soon as he can.

            Dom Bedendo
12 disposals, four tackles, four clearances

Dom came out of the game at three-quarter time as he was an emergency for the AFL team playing later that night. He was strong around the stoppages as a winger, and we really liked what we saw from his tackle pressure. He has been hard at work at the contested side of his game and is now showing this week-in, week-out which is a huge credit to him and his hunger to improve.

            Arthur Jones
Nine disposals, three marks, three inside 50s

Arty played most of his game on the wing with a little bit of forward time. He didn’t have a huge involvement in the game, but his running ability was a standout. We just need to keep working with him to find more ways for him to impact the game.

            Luke Cleary
            11 disposals, three rebound 50s

Luke came back into the VFL team after being medi-sub for our AFL team vs West Coast. Whilst he didn’t have a huge impact on the game, he was pretty steady for us in defence. He was able to halve his contests and then find avenues forward for us. He has come back with specific areas he wants to work on to help aid his run at his next block of senior games.

            Roarke Smith
18 disposals, four tackles, four clearances

Roarke had a change of position this week, playing most of his minutes as an inside mid. He was strong around the contests both as an offensive distributor and as a pressure player - he tackled and competed well. We really like his patterns away from the contest which allowed him to fly for his marks and keep the ball in our half. He was critical to our win and added another string to his bow by moving inside for the team this week.

            Jason Johannisen
Eight disposals, four marks, one goal

JJ was still on restricted minutes coming off a long injury layoff. His speed really challenged the opposition, and if we could have maximized his opportunities inside 50 he is most likely kicking a handful of goals. The main thing though is that he is getting through and feeling good, whilst also impacting games and leading our younger players ahead of the ball.

            Cody Raak
16 disposals, seven marks, two rebound 50s

Cody had a similar game to Luke. He competed well at times and did what he needed to do, but we are just trying to find ways to help him get involved in the game more, while increasing his defensive output.

            Jordon Sweet
12 disposals, four marks, seven inside 50s, 36 hitouts

Sweety came back to the VFL team after playing a block of AFL games. He was able to get his hand to the ball more often than not in the ruck battles around the ground, but at times we weren’t able to maximize the connections from ruck to mids. He continues to work on his game away from the stoppage to become a strong aerial player.

              Thx Bad.

Bedendo close to debut. Good news. I thought Schache was really good and smart with his ruck follow up work at ground level - deft taps etc. So hope Schache gets another chance and grabs it - could be so important for us with his versatility.

sounds like Schache is being groomed for the second ruck role.

I was at the game till 3/4 time and had thought Parker was really having an impact when he was on the ground. I didn't realise he went off at halftime so 12 possessions, 5 marks and 5 tackles wasn't a bad output for two quarters. It was easily his best game (and he can really roost the ball at times).

As a footballer, the only thing that Schache is lacking is that passion. All of his problems are between his ears.

Also the highlights, Schache is really the only player that put his hand up IMHO. Too many players either had nearly games or their skills let them down at bad times.

Scored 2 of his goals from ruck contests and marked well also.

His kicking could be quite a weapon. He gets great distance on a fairly low trajectory. He's the guy I throw the ball to for the kick in when the scores are close in the dying minutes. He's an interesting player and improves every game.

He reminds me a bit of Mark Bayes who is one of the best kicks I've ever seen. Bayes on the run could hit a moving target 50m+ away with a bullet pass that barely rose above fence paling height. He didn't miss often.

Can we be honest though Schache will never be a reliable second ruck just like Lewis Young was never going to be a second ruck(let alone a first ruck)

Its about time he tore apart a game at VFL level and he deserves a call up but he plays forward and thats it. He will fail as a second ruck make no mistake.

While he can kick the ball I do get frustrated at times with him because he takes a long time to decide to kick the ball, meaning he doesn't actually use his kicking ability to any real advantage and probably ends up sending it down the line to a contest anyway.
