Darcy will play down back and be the intercept defender we need.Like Naughton did in his first year.

He is good enough to play that role.
Dad never commentates on him but I wonder if Luke is a presence in Sam's short term role. No hurry is the go I guess.
Still reckon he could improve our seniors over the next 6 rounds. We may be able to lose one game yikes!

Weirdly, when he was named as u16 captain as a mid, one scout mentioned he could make a decent AFL back pocket

Absolutely they should play him this year to give him a taste. It is easier to learn the craft down back especially to play the intercept defender when the only time you are on someone is when the ball is bounced. Can also throw him forward.

I don’t mind the idea of giving him a taste at senior level as an intercepting third tall in defense, but I really hope he ultimately develops into that forward/ruck role that is incredibly difficult to nail (putting aside the fact the best player in the league in that role is already on our list but doesn’t want to play there).

I think we've finally found our crumbing goalsneak. About 24 secs in.

Did anyone find Vandermeers shank in the forward pocket with Bevo and the players watching on humorous? I must say couldn't stop laughing when it happened. Um yep he is not a forward make no mistake!

When he first played VFL with us he was playing half back. Wonder what his best position is. Back pocket guarding the small forwards? He has speed.

He played a bit of his junior football as a defender as well and I assume it was his run and dash that appealed to us.

What traits does he have to be a decent AFL player?

He is no doubt quick, but has poor skills, little footy nous and is injury prone.... He's loved by the MC, but I don't see it with him.

The exciting traits he displayed early on included kicking some goals early in games but the challenges you have detailed above have eroded that. Regarding the footy nous does this include his ability to cough up 50mtr penalties?
It's been one of the more frustrating parts of his game. Now that West has stepped up it will be interesting to see if Vandermeer is still in the MC's mind as much.

VDM might still have what it takes to be a good backman. He has pace for breaking the lines, we know from experience with Boyd that the extra time and space can do wonders for your disposal efficiency and he has that tenacity and competitive edge that is a natural fit for a defender.

My main concern would be if he can compete aerially and if his disciple issues don't get cleared up because they would be more costly in defence.
