    Mattaes Phillipou

Matt Rendell on SEN has highlighted that some clubs are finding Mattaes Phillipou a challenge to work out where he might land.

The general consensus is that he is talented enough to be well in the top 10 mix and as high as pick 5 but other clubs have him more in the 10 to 15 range.

    Here are Rendells thoughts:

Draft guru Matt Rendell believes South Australian Mattaes Phillipou is a polarising prospect in the upcoming National Draft.

The talented midfielder currently sits ninth in Cal Twomey’s phantom form guide, the Herald Sun have him at 12, while ESPN has him ranked second.

Reports suggest clubs see things similarly, with most having him in the 10 to 15 range, while others see him as a top five prospect.

“Some people have him at five, some have him well outside 10. He’s a polarising selection in the draft,” Rendell told SEN SA.

“I’ve been through this many times.

“What I’m hearing is some of the clubs can’t work him out personality wise.

“This happens quite a lot. And the blokes who you can’t quite work out usually get pushed down the list.”

Rendell named Hawthorn star James Sicily and GWS All-Australian Sam Taylor as examples of this he lived through in his time as a recruiter.

“I’ll give you an example of one with me at Collingwood. We couldn’t work out James Sicily for the life of us,” he said.

“We had discussions for days and days trying to work out whether he was going to be competitive enough an AFL footballer and whether he was too soft a personality.

“Was he going to be hard enough to cope with feedback and training and the like. I could name you four or five others. Sam Taylor was another one we couldn’t work out.

“This happen with every club. We ended up taking one we couldn’t work out which was Tom Langdon and he ended up being a really good player until his knee forced him out.

“But this happens a lot so this is why some clubs have him inside pick five and they probably reckon they know and some clubs well outside 10 who can’t quite work him out.

“They love to be tell the coaching staff what the player is going to be like which is hard because they’re 18 and have differing levels of maturity.

“That’s why players drop down. If you wonder ‘how did he fall so far’, that’s usually the reason. Clubs haven’t been able to work them out.”

Sicily fell to pick 56 in the 2013 National Draft, while Taylor was selected with pick 28 by the Giants.

So I guess if we have all been wondering why Phillipou hasn't been projected as high as his ability and form throughout the carnival might suggest is that when clubs have interviewed him they are seeing a higher level of risk with an early selection than they're comfortable with.

Hard to know exactly what they're reading about his character or what flaws they're finding but he will be one of the more fascinating draftees this year if Rendell's intel is close to the mark.

That might explain why the needle on where Phillipou might land swings so widely from the various news sources.
High level of talent but he may not achieve his potential.

The subject is interesting but that may be the worst edited piece of journalism I've ever read.

Correct, it's not an article but a transcript of a conversation.
The content is what should make it an interesting discussion.
Do we look past some of the flaws identified or do we roll the dice and focus purely on his ability?
The risk profile lessens a bit for clubs the later he falls.

Does it depend on what the issues are?

I certainly would love to have him at the club purely on ability, but not sure what the issues are?

Perhaps but it's potentially harder to explain why a player picked in top 7 pick isn't playing than it is for a team with a late first rounder.

He went late in the draft which indicates that some clubs were reading those signs.
It definitely doesn't mean a player cant turn it around.
Hawks picked Hartung and Garlett before Sicly and Ceglar a couple of picks after him.

Could players influence who they are selected by, by changing their response and body language with interviews from different clubs? I recall our own mullet man scared off interstate clubs as it was clear he preferred to stay in Melbourne.

I can't quite work out what it is that from the small amount of footage I've seen from him that I don't like, but there is something there. He still gives me Macrae vibes with a more penetrating kick( which I should be sold on) but I think its more the physicality part maybe that is more of the same of our current midfield mix?
