Jay Rantall played in yesterday's match sim and was wearing jumper number 16.

I was situated on the outer wing and he fluffed his lines a few times in front of supporters sitting there (ie spilled a couple of easy marks/got caught with the ball).

He is average height for a footballer (Wiki says 6ft 1in) and not overly muscular in appearance.

He is pictured in front of Darcy on the Bulldogs website in the article 'Darcy Primed To Attack 2023' (he has blonde hair).

I'm not sure any 'hype' is warranted in 2023 going on his early performance yesterday, however, he did improve as the game went on.

That is a bummer. I liked what I saw of him. Raw but pretty good in air and didn’t shirk a contest.

Rantall, Poulter headline 2023 Footscray signings

The Footscray Bulldogs have bolstered their 2023 side, with the additions of former AFL-listed Magpies Jay Rantall and Caleb Poulter.

Rantall, 21, represented Collingwood on five occasions before being delisted at the end of 2021.

The former second-round draft pick arrives at the Kennel following a year in the SANFL, where he played a key role in Norwood’s premiership run with an average of 23 disposals, five tackles and three clearances per game.

Poulter, 20, played 11 AFL games in his debut season after being taken with pick 30 in the 2020 National Draft.

Despite bursting onto the scene, he only managed to breakthrough for one senior game the following season due to competition for spots.

Poulter also featured in Saturday’s AFL intraclub match simulation at Mars Stadium, alongside a number of familiar VFL Bulldogs including Lachie Sullivan, Ewan Macpherson and Dan Orgill.

The 2023 VFL playing list will be finalised in the coming weeks, ahead of a round one clash against reigning premiers Casey on Saturday 25 March.

Footscray list confirmed for 2023

The Footscray Bulldogs have confirmed their VFL playing list for season 2023, with a number of familiar names and some new faces arriving at the Kennel.

Headlining the group of returning players is reigning Best and Fairest winner Lachie Sullivan, along with Nathan Drummond, Dan Orgill, Ewan Macpherson, Cooper Craig-Peters and Jarrod Gilbee to name a few.

As announced last month, former Collingwood AFL duo Caleb Poulter and Jay Rantall have committed to the red, white and blue.

2022 Echuca premiership players Sam Willoughby and Riley Smith have also been added to the list, alongside Western Jet Cameron Kizan and former Geelong VFL utility Ned Harris.

Coach Stewart Edge will be at the helm for a third consecutive season, as he looks to build on last year’s nine wins and 11th-placed finish.

The Bulldogs will kick off their 2023 campaign this Saturday afternoon against Casey at Casey Fields.

The first bounce will be 2.05pm, and be live-streamed via AFL.com.au.

State of play: Two former Magpies are the key recruits for what is a green Bulldogs’ VFL list. Caleb Poulter was with Collingwood in 2021-22. Jay Rantall was there in 2020-21 and figured in Norwood’s SANFL flag last year. The Bulldogs have also secured Sam Willoughby and Riley Smith, both premierships players in 2022 with Echuca, Tristan Maple from the Greater Western Victoria Rebels and Cameron Kizan from the Western Jets. Lachie Sullivan, who won the best and fairest by the length of Geelong Road last year, has returned as captain, and fellow team leaders Joel Garner and Ewan Macpherson are back too. Disappointingly for the Dogs, they lost top tall Bailey Van De Heuvel to Geelong VFL. Footscray finished last season strongly to make a late lunge for the top eight, and also managed to get some games into its young VFL-listed players. One of them, Cooper Craig-Peters, a small forward who can slip into the midfield, might be one to build up to a breakthrough season.
