VFL Round 9, Footscray v Port Melbourne - May 25 - 2024
Re: VFL Round 9, Footscray v Port Melbourne - May 25 - 2024
I went along yesterday and wasn't overly impressed with any of the AFL listed players. I thought Cleary was solid in defence, Lobb was ok, but really he should be dominating at this level. He is a man mountain, 30 years old and should be killing them.
* Bedendo I am worried about, all he has is his leap
* McNeil was ok he did have 7 tackles
* Croft - impressed with young Croft, but he is a skinny pimply kid and needs a few more years to bulk up and get some strength. Very athletic player.
* Baker - got alot of the ball, but could have been more damaging
* Poulter - not as dominating as last week, Had a better second half where he got more involved.
* Buku - not sure he is really a backman, although did some good things - I prefer him forward
* Buss- still learning and getting better all the time - in time will be a good option for CHB
*L Smith - a lot to learn, but I like what I see. Already better than Sweet as he gets a bit of the ball around the ground (15 disposals)
* Arty is not working out at HFF. Needs to be on a wing

Bedendo, yeah, i'm not sure about him, flashy but nowhere near consistent enough and really needs to use his run a lot more because he a great runner, has he been tried off a half back? Same with Arty, flashy, is a good pressure player at times but again, nowhere near consistent enough, maybe another to try off a half back to get more involved, skills are iffy, both in the gun for mine.
McNeil again, played pretty well yesterday and can pressure but not enough consistency, skills are also iffy and misses too many shots on goal.
Buku 100% forward where he can have a presence and wouldn't hate having him as the third tall if required in the AFL side, even though he was in the under 18's AA team as a defender, just doesn't defend enough and gets found out too easily.
Crofty, i can see why we are playing him forward in his development as a player, the best defenders know where their forward opponents play and run to, how they think etc, likewise with playing forwards back at stages during their development so when you've played as a forward surely you would have a better idea playing as a defender, if that makes sense? Played well yesterday but ideally Buss and Crofty down back, Lobb and Buku up forward for mine.
Think Poulter may get a game this week, possibly Lobb too.

Eventually Croft may end up in the backline, but at the moment he doesn't have strength to hold down CHB. He was very impressive and will be a big asset in the future.

We did experiment a bit with that option last year in one or two practice games. He did okay but to me he either has to be a winger or small forward. 2 and a half years in and he really need to start making some progress and move from a player with some skills and pace to an effective performer. With Weightman out he's missing his chance to get a few more senior games under his belt.

I would like to see Arty tried as a run with lockdown player.
He doesn't get near it enough but with his wheels he should be able to keep up with the better players who find the right spots

I have a feeling I can’t shake that he’s going to be a tease. Some tricks and some pace to excite the eye, but not going to make the grade. I don’t think he’s a forward. To me he’s a winger and needs to play there if he’s going to make it. But just remain unsure if he can do it.

From what I've seen of Arty is he struggles to get involved enough between the 50m arcs. Meaning he is not suited to playing HFF, wing or HBF. He might be more suited to playing within the arcs as a small forward or a small defender. Or as Bulldog Joe suggests as a run with player. It could be worth a try but I don't see him aggressive enough for that kind of role. I think small forward is his best chance.

So - tell me this. What recognisable AFL skill does he possess. His #1 wood is his endurance and repeat sprint efforts...but as you say, he can't find the footy BTA so...where does this leave him??
Whilst you're at it, you can answer the same question for Bedendo and Khamis.

I hate to say it but I think Arty will be a bust. He does some nice things but as its be said doesn't get involved enough and he isn't a one grab player. Bedendo has a nice leap and a reasonable kick for goal but what else does he bring. Buku is a bit of a old fashion stay at home forward he is good at marking the ball if he can get a run at it and is a very good set shot but that's were it ends.
All three have had a shot and haven't made the cut.

Agree with this. Arty is an opportunist who only gets it a few times a game so needs to convert or set up when he does. Seems to be lost when he plays on the wing for whatever reason which is why he needs to learn the art of a small forward and do it quickly. Has all the attributes to be a smart small forward but needs to get a move on. Jury still out with me. I notice Collingwood are now rolling Hill through the middle on occasions so it does a while for the smaller guys to get the tank before they go up the ground.

My additional concern with Arty is that he fumbles a LOT.
So he doesn't read the play and then fumbles when he gets near it.
He is quick and can jump but until he can get near the ball and be a one grab player he isn't going to make it as a small forward either.
