It's a good shout, I suspect our pick 33 was originally in the plans to a part on bringing Budarick in.

But this from Cal Twomey is a really good move.

A pick swap has been agreed over the weekend and is set to be lodged tomorrow. The Western Bulldogs will trade pick 12 to Greater Western Sydney for picks 14 & 37. Pick 37 is separately set to be used by the Dogs to get a deal done for Connor Budarick.

I'm all for 'get the best player' with your first selection but at the same time - if there isn't a stand out player (and it feels like there isn't) then why grab another small running defender to go with those two recent selections (not to mention the nomination by Budarick).

Like I said - I'm all for Taylor as a player and have long been talking about our need to boost the running defender spots on our list...but haven't we done that? And yep, we need a lock down small back but isn't that Budarick (and it sure as hell isn't Taylor at this stage of his development at least).

I think the selections last year of Dolan and Hynes really do highlight the areas on our list where we need support - connecting players who can run and win their own footy. I'm looking for those traits right now vs ball in front of them players.
That makes a lot of sense however, neither Sellwood or Jaques are quick movers of the football or run and carry players like Taylor is.
With Duryea retired and JJ currently in a holding pattern at the moment we might still be considering another smaller defender even with Budarick likely to be heading our way.
From a playing perspective Sellwood is a superior 1 v 1 defender to Taylor who really isn't that strong in that regard. Jaques is a smooth mover, good in the air and prefers shorter safer kicks.

Maybe as you say he isn't a great fit for the short term.

One player that interests me even though I haven't seen a lot of him is Blake Thredgold who is 194cm tall and a very good mover for his size. Good mark as well.
Most of the draft projections have him down the order a bit but in terms of fit for us he seems a good one.

It's been said here a few times that the word is we will only select 2 players at the draft and we could sneak in a third player which is likely to be Will Darcy
Are you proposing that we move down the order in the first round and somehow also turn pick 33 into say pick 25?
The net result might mean we might have picks 20 and 25 rather than 14 and 33?
Seems a bit risky but you would want to be confident we can get the players we want

Yeah, our first is too early but to get back in with an end of first rounder would be nice. He's got some lovely attributes

Id trade up for X Taylor but sounds like he’ll be gone, the others don’t really excite me that much more than the options at our first. I really want Oskar Taylor, think we’ve lacked some elite speed in our backhalf since prime Jj/Richards moving out. Really love what he projects as a player

Just a worst case scenario, if Suns trade out both their picks & blues trade out there’s. We likely end up picking at #16, and if neither of the SA talls get taken,
who would you prefer out of Phillipou, O. Taylor or Hibbins-Hargreaves?

    the mock for those wondering…
    1. West Coast - Willem Duursma
    2. Gold Coast - Zeke Uwland
    3. West Coast - Cooper Duff-Tytler
    4. Richmond - Sullivan Robey
    5. Gold Coast - Dylan Patterson
    6. Richmond - Sam Grlj
    7. Brisbane - Daniel Annable
    8. Essendon - Dyson Sharp
    9. Essendon - Samuel Cumming
    10. Carlton - Harry Dean
    11. Melbourne - Xavier Taylor (GC)
    12. Melbourne - Jacob Farrow (GC)
    13. Hawthorn - Oliver Greeves
    14. Traded - Josh Lindsay (Car)
    15. Sydney - Lachy Dovaston
    16. Western Bulldogs -
    1. Jevan Phillipou - mid/fwd (SA)
    2. Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves - fwd
    3. Oskar Taylor - half back
    4. Aidan Schubert - ruck/fwd (SA)
    5. Mitch Marsh - fwd (SA)

This is fair, and I would back in our guys to absolutely make the right call.

It'll be a bit of a needs thing too - if we really like Xavier Taylor as a third-tall defender, or Grlj as a running player, I could see us trying to get up the order to snag one of those guys.

It seems that one of Dovaston, Lindsay, Farrow, or Oskar Taylor will be around at our pick, so I don't see us doing something drastic to get up the board. I don't watch a heap of the kids, but I'd be pretty happy with any of those four.
