    WILLY vs Box Hill

A perfect day for footy down at Whitten Oval.

Stack, Jones, Shaw and Daniels lined up for the reserves.

Shaw battled hard but didn't have a great impact. He rucked for most of the game as well as filling in as a key backman.

Daniels was an absolute cracker - he was great in close, winning the hard ball and really provided a lot of run and carry. The major knock on him is his kicking but even that was good today. Definite bargain.

Stack was disappointing - he just seemed lost at times and got out bodied in the forward line on more than one occasion. He seems low on confidence.

Jones turned it on during the 3rd qtr - took a couple of very strong contested marks and converted for goals. Earlier in the game he seemed lost and didn't know when to demand the ball but after half time he really showed some class. He's definitely a work in progress but I like what I've seen.

Roughead, Grant, Boumann, Harbrow, Wood, Picken, Skipper, Wight, O'Keefe, Reid, Callan, Lynch and Welsh all played in the seniors. Williams was named but didn't play.

Box Hill came out and jumped Willy in the first qtr - something like 8 goals to 3 at qtr time.

It was Wayde Skipper who put his hand up and grabbed the game by the scruff. He was BOG for me, really worked hard all day - rucked all over the ground, won contested ball and fed it out nicely and kicked goals. It's clear he knows he is on notice and he has decided to give it everything - I'm happy for him and think he can have a good year.

The same can't be said for Wight. Lacked intensity, got out bodied by smaller opponents. He did take a nice contested mark in the forward line and converted. I've given up on him unfortunately - we all know what we get from him and I can't see where any improvement will come from.

Boumann was great again - geez he's turned a corner. Defended stoutly with good spoiling and also linked up well and ran the lines. He also didn't miss a target all day. Can he bulk up enough to take on AFL forwards? Time will tell, but I'm glad he's got his act together. Should play senior Willy footy all year.

Grant really worked his butt off, particularly in the first half. He led hard up the ground in a Riewoldt type role, before doubling back as a forward target. He kicked a goal from 45 that didn't look like missing, so his hard work at changing his technique is hopefully paying off. He also tackled really well, including one where he smashed a Box Hill player into the ground, knocking him flat. Depending on match ups, I'd love to see him play senior footy soon - I think he'd thrive on it.

Harbrow and O'Keefe were lively, both kicked goals and disposed of the ball well. Reid was great again, won lots of hard ball and his disposal into the forward line was high class. He also was used forward as a small target and kicked some nice set shots.

Wood played on Yze and was probably beaten in the end but he continued to work hard as an attacking backman. I can't remember any major disposal problems either. Would love to see him play senior AFL footy soon, probably battling with Tiller for a spot at the moment.

Picken and Callan both worked hard. Picken dropped some marks but also kicked some nice goals and Callan seemed to cope a corky which slowed him down. Should be right tho.

Lynch faded in and out of the game, tried to get fancy and was pinged a few times. He really needs to step up as there are others who are going past him.

Welsh presented well up forward, his back soreness didn't seem to worry him. His kicking for goal was spot on and I think he finished with 3 or 4. He'll play against North I'd imagine.

Roughead was quiet again, but did work hard and you get the feeling that with every game he's learning more and more.

Willy won by 4 or 5 goals, with the Bulldogs players really dominating play.

Of note for Box Hill, Dowler really struggled and tried to wrestle Grant at one stage and Thorp came off wrapped in ice and limping badly.

If anyone has any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Great report "Comrade" agree with everything you said, Reid, Harbrow and Skip were fantastic today.
I am sorry to say it looks to me as if Wighty is just playing out his contract as he shows nothing at all which is a great disappointment to me as I thought he had a lot to offer a couple of years ago and has just gone backwards. On a brighter note I can't wait to see the boy Grant playing in the seniors as he shows superb skills, also his kicking today was on target.

I saw the second half of the seniors game,
that tackle by grant was a ripper, he'd probably get in trouble if it was in the afl. although it did seem to be in one motion. The Whitten oval is particularly hard and the grass is short. I also noticed Grant had a nice abrasion on his leg, probably from a carpet burn type injury on the hard and abrasive surface.

I agree mostly with the nice write up. Just a couple of things to add,
Bouman wasn't bad in contests in the backline, spent a few minutes up forward and was all at sea. Seems to be a better spoiler than a marker.

Wight was terrible as usual at times. After one mistake (a poor disposal off his foot) the runner told him to handball, don't kick the ball!

Wood was quieter but it seems they are trying to teach him about defence.

O'keefe was good when in the middle but still doesn't work hard enough when he doesn't have the ball.

Reid is a great pickup. Real tough and very Mitch Hahn like in his endeavour.

I thought skipper was good in the ruck, although his decision making and some skill errors were dissapointing. He bombed the ball in the air on numerous occasions and some disposal was all over the place but he was busy.

Welsh was good without really trying too hard. He'll be right to play next week, although looks a little over weight (just a little!)

Stack performing poorly in the Willy 2's in an early concern.

          Wight makes me cry.

Ayce was rested - no injury concerns.

I was under the impression that Skip signed a 1 year contract, and it's obvious that he is fighting as hard as he can to stay at the club.

I'm reasonably sure that this is correct.

Thanks for the write-up comrade, it's always good to read how our young players go.

                  Re: WILLY vs Box Hill

I went along and saw both games as well.

As Comrade has already done a detailed report I'll keep mine brief.

The Bulldog listed players in the reserves consisted of Stack, Jones, Daniels and Shaw.
Stack was quiet but did some nice things.
Jones looked good in the air and even on the ground which is great given his size but his kicking for goal was inconsistent. He floated between CHF and FF.
Daniels had a superb game and covered a lot of territory. His skill level was particularly good and he has a solid work ethic around the packs. Clearly the standout of the game.
Shaw was quiet again. The things he does normally look good enough but he just isn't getting enough of the ball at the moment.
Mulligan and White just looked on today and Cloke played in the magoos.

The firsts actually performed poorly today and it wasn't until the Hawks rested blokes that they got back into it and opened up a nice lead. Don't let the scoreboard fool you we were poor today.
At quarter time the mild mannered Gotch gave a few of the Bulldogs boys a right royal bollocking. Harbrow got a spray and after a good game last week the coach let rip into Boumann about his endeavour and even offered him an extended spell on the bench.
To Boumann's credit his work rate and performance particularly after half time improved a lot and he he got back into the good books. Ben Davies copped an earful as well for his errors.

There was a fair spread of goal kickers by the Bulldog boys today which wasn't bad

Skipper had another fine effort this week and whilst he might be out of favor by a lot of the WOOF regulars I still he offers our side something. He did well around the ground, kicked a nice goal and held his marks. Solid outing.

Picken played mainly in the midfield and did well without being one of the better players. He went missing here and there which didn't help his performance.

Callan looked out of sorts and got an injured ankle which had him off the ground for the majority of the 2nd half. He didn't do a lot today.

Roughead started on the bench but was a good back-up for Skipper today and his ruck work around the forward line allowed Skipper to play a kick behind play.

Grant started off as a HFF today and moved between there and FF. His kicking is far better when he is up the ground. His crunching tackle on a Box Hill player got him some attention and the poor bloke on the receiving end was very groggy for a period of time.

Reid moved between midfield and forward duties and did well. He was very good around the stoppages which is his strength. His skill level still lets him down but it was a good effort.

Wood had a solid day without being one of the better players. He is maturing into a nice player but just hasn't put it all together yet.

O'Keefe started off quietly but got better as the game wore on. He kicked a smart goal and used the ball pretty well today. He also moved around the ground a lot better than last year and whilst he might never be a speedster he isn't as slow as is his reputation.

Boumann had a solid 2nd half and looked good as a forward and as a defender. When he is switched on he looks a far better player.

IMO, Wight wasn't as bad as Comrade and Cyberdoggie are saying. He did some nice things but because the Hawks were so small in the forward line there was no natural match-up and he spent a fair bit of time on the wing. Not a great game but not a disaster either.

Lynch did some nice things but way too quiet. Callan injured and had little impact.

Harbrow did some of the normal things you would expect from him but I don't think he was effective as he should be.

Welsh was poor in the first quarter but got better. At 3 quarter time the coach was very pleased with his efforts. I was a bit disappointed with his efforts today because at times he just didn't seem to go hard enough for marking contests. Defensively he was good though.

If anyone has any questions, ask away. By the way, Cordy was rested today.

                    Thanks Gary.

On Stack one of comment that is a common theme in reports is that what he does he does pretty well, but he floats in and out of the game far too much. It seems that he doesn't really know how to impose himself on the game when things aren't going well.

How do we think this can be turned around?

That would be a fair assumption.

Two years ago I saw him play in the middle for the Werribee reserves side against Frankston and he had a sensational 4 quarter game but that is about the only time he has put it all together. I think he needs to be given one job and let him develop. At the moment I think that needs to be as an attacking defender. He just seems to lose concentration when he is shuffled around a lot. Some players pick up their intensity when moved to a new position but that rarely works with Stack. Settle him down into a spot for a few weeks to build confidence would be my remedy.
