Actually played with us. Was a CHB of some talent who one day mid-season, upped and left and played for Yarraville without a clearance for the rest of the season. Once he did that he closed the door on returning to the VFL. Then it was on to Port and the rest as they say is history.

TCD, I guy I worked with a bloke who apparently played for Sunshine. He was a genuine rover who wore a helmet, his name is David Foley. Does the name ring a bell?

An old industry colleague of mine was Peter Neville, who kicked many a big bag for Mordialloc back in the 70's - been in a very good paddock as well.

Fred Cook (born 16 November 1947) is a former Australian rules footballer. He played 33 games with Footscray in the VFL from 1967 until 1969 but it was in the VFA with Port Melbourne that he made his name. In his brief career with Footscray he played in defence and only kicked two goals but with Port he was one of the league's premier forwards, kicking a VFA record 1364 goals from his 305 games.

Cook's career was full of off-field drama. He was sacked from Footscray for 'disciplinary reasons' and ended up at Yarraville. In 1970, his debut season, he won the J. J. Liston Trophy for the VFA's best and fairest player. Despite his efforts Yarraville were relegated and Cook decided to be transferred to Port Melbourne. During the 1972 pre season training he suffered a heart attack but managed to return to the field later in the year and even kicked 16 goals in a reserves match.

The 1970s saw Cook played at full forward and dominate the league's goalkicking. He topped the VFA's goalkicking fives times in a prolific period from 1976-1982, at his best in 1977 when he kicked 155 goals in the season. He also played in 6 premierships with Port Melbourne.

Liked watching Bob Johnson, old bastard would just stand in the square and shove opponent out and take the mark.

Well there you go. That's what happens when you don't do your research on players just before your time (I was born in 71). He was great to watch at Port. Ta TCD

I know the card comes from an impeccable source, but if that's Fred Cook, I'm Ricky Ponting.

I worked with Fred for number of years. Pretty much a tragic figure these days unfortunately

I think that Fred is a cousin of EJ as well. Or was he a cousin of Gary Dempsey...
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.
