BT's big day out (Willy v Frankston)

A sensational day in many ways. I was very disappointed to see the old great grandstand now fully demolished after arson. That was offset by order a pie with sauce and a fanta served to me an old canteeen lady next to a 'lady' who asked 'where's all the nice stuff?'. To which she was replied you can have a pie, hotdog or dim sims". To which was then replied, 'no i mean like soup or salad sandwiches'. To which was replied we have lovely things you can have; a pie, hotdog or dim sims, with or without soy sauce'.

I love the VFL cans of VB, raffles for slabs and the helpers on the gate not riding you because you forgot your membership card.

I made my way over the the Willi stats team in the mini grandstand and stayed with the for the day. They are some great people and some of the stats, great and bad.

So i arrive sit down about a minute in and see The Bou running and kicking with some nice poise. Down to Roughy who at CHF needs to continue to work on his positioning sometimes.

In short we thrashed Frankston in the magoos so i will only give the highlights:

It was like in cricket terms Australia A playing the Keilor 7ths. We had some very good doggies listed players who really performed. By halftime it was 30 points to out 70pts and we won by 70 odd points.

The Bou: Should be in the one's. I understand Wight might help a VFL side win like Cloke does, but Bou has a lot to do to become an AFL player, he isn't the great white hope, but some of his runs from defence and long kicking were Brian Lake-esq. I'm a fan. Took some nice pack marks too. A work in progress, not the saviour, but along the lines of a trainee Brian Lake.

Lynch: If his attitude and thingys are over, boy can we use his spark. Yes his opponents were crap, but his forward pressure, running, and tacking, and kicking were sensational. Kicked 5 or so goals too. I was taking notes for the game and had to stop writing great things about Lynch today and goal assists and whatnot. Get fit and bring him and Stack into contention. Plus his goal assista dn work off the all, all bar grabbing Gotthcy and Eade by the the throat and say 'play me; Malcolm made a statement.

Mulligan and Shaw: Good at this level - VFL reserves. Not convinced from today they showed too many reasons why they should be elevated. But as i say, this was one game.

Ogle: Looks as raw as they come.

PLEASE ONLY READ THE FOLLOWING POST IF YOU ARE OVER 18 AND AGREE TO TERMS:

Liam Jones: I had movement today, i got that excited. No over statement. The willi watchers were not sure what to expect, but the kid developed right is going to be a freaking great player. The way he moves and positions, he plays deep and takes marks (and PACK MARKS) and also runs up the ground Riewoldt-esq. I think he kicked 4 or 5 and was played back in the last. His forward presssure, running down, tackling, oh my god he can play. He was a natural swagger and if that's his first game against adults for our club, get down and watch him play. I haven't seen Cordy yet, but Jones today was marking everything, everywhere and kicking goals and tackling. I god i have a man-crush for this kid, it could be more. WOW!!!!!

Roughy: I was about to scream at the willi stats guy who says the players and what they did, as every 20 seconds i'd hear Roughead effective tap (It was driving me insane). He is so far above VFL reserves it's not funny. He dropped back and blocked the hole and looked a little Wynd and his palm work is at this early stage and good as Wynd and Cox's would've been. And then he went to CHF and looked a little like his cousin and kicked a few goals himself. The 2008 draft ay just be a beauty. Again i had to stop writing about Roughy, he was just awesome for me, and his second and third efforts and smoothering and he has a man size body already.

Roguhy and Lynch will be promoted. Their games were awesome and indicative of skilled players who make grades below inept. The Bou should be too, but porbably wont.

Not sure how many games we have Liam for in the ressies, but get down and watch him. Today was a highlight in my 2009 footy calender.

So game over, 69pt win, the big game.

Top of the ladder Williamstown vs bottom of the ladder Frankston.

    First Qtr:

Granty makes a great tackle and sets the scene.
Wightly make an error, ah well.
Ward plays on to advantage forma free and has a running shot from 45 and goals. Love his ability to back himself like hat, just like Griff and Coon.
DFA was missing a bit of the 'F' - Spoiling but not a real hard edge, a few skill errors. Errors whcih kept occuring through the game.
Ward again kicked another great goal. There was some argy bargy and Cloke was smacked a few times, and there was a quick play-on where the ball went to Grant who kicked a great curling goal.
Grant was not playing deep forward 1st half.

    Good 1st quarter:

    Willi - 7.4.46
    Frankston - 2.5.17

Gotchy was happy and emplored his player to keep going.

    2nd Quarter:

Proof a footy god exists. Although Willi Stopped, Frankston kicked goials out there a-holes from 50 out on the wrong side, with varying winds. The entite team stopped, although Stack did some nice things. Egan looked a guy who can't be bothered. The game got very willing with a few scuffles and 50's and Cloke came in for his head being kocked hard a fait few times. We missed tackles and the footy good put fluke after fluke through the main sticks. But thats how it goes.

Here's a stat - by half time Willi had no recorded 2nd efforts in their official records!!!!

    Bad Quarter:

    Top v Bottom

    Willi - 12.4.76
    Frankston -12.7.79

    Third Quarter:

DFA missed tagrers and Wight did nothing. (Statistically Wight got the most punches for the day, but he should he is 200cm, but other than that he did nothing in my opinion for the day). Tim Callan missed tackles too and the intensity was not there.

Stacky did some nice things, which he un id with some poor things against poor direct opposition. I think he is like Josh Hill, who might frustrate you, but needs to go to that higher level to achieve.

Ward set up Egan who golaed, but the game was really in the nail biting balance. Frankston scored back. And it would be goal for goal for the lead, and every contest could cghnage the lead. It was an amazing game. Tim Callan in the willingness had his head ripped offf, so much so a 50 was also given. But then a very, very dubious downfield went to Frankston for a certain goal and Frankton lead by 9pts.

Egan standing in the oial square was gifted a goal by a lazy defender which got it back to 3. Egan just looks like a country footballer.

Then we got some good run, the ball moved out Timmmy Callan zoned of him man ran to 50 and kicked truely and Willi hit the front from nowhere.

The sun was out, only a slight breeeze, so no reason for the poor skills of both sides at times.

Just before 3/4 time Henry White's defencive side of his game (which i question) was exploited and a 3rd Frankston 50 was given, again giving them a certain goal and lead 105/103. We got a rushed behind 104 and only getting one extra point each with some dumb decision making, on our side by Skipper.,

    3 Quarter Time:

    Top v Bottom

    Willi - 16.9.105
    Frankston - 16.10.106

Frankston had the scoring end too in the last. Not so much breeze, but where the score was being kicked.

    Last Quarter:

It was a ripper of a quarter. True footy, sensational, amazing stuff and why i love it. Not enough of it in AFL. Not the spirit anyway.

Gotchy emplors them to stand up. In the minds of the AFL listed guys, an opportunity to be promoted. One did and you will see who:

After a stuff up and not clean handling by DFA, the ball moves forward and Rose kicks Willi in front.

Then Frankton kicks a 55m goal on the wrongside on the boundary line against the line of the wind for a goal, and then they are back infront, and seem to have momemtum. Frankston hit the lead again by 1pt.

Ward then runs down a Frankton player just about to set up a play and gets the free, and halts the momementum.

Wardy then does it 90 seconds later 40 out in front, and goals, and Willi hit the lead all of a sudden. At that point Wardy has 9 effective tackles!!!

Wardy gets the ball from the pack and runs to 50 out and just misses, but it was a 'handy point'. The lead is 6pts even.

Frankston run it down the other end as it looks thorugh for a goal it snicks the post. Back to 5pts to Willi. There was the biggest brainfade i've ever seen from the turnover, they gift the ball to a Frankston player who wants to stuff up to, but then another Frankton player snaps form 10m out, and Frankston hit the lead by 1pt. And seemingly again have the run on.

Frankston get the clearanace out the back and kick to 2 on 1 on the wing and play handball to get the run on. The 'one' was Callan Ward. He harrassed both so hard, and made them go back and forth between themselves for so long (6-9 seconds!!!) another teammate finally helped him out as he ould've got another holding the ball, but his teammate pushed in the back. But again Ward halted the move.

Frankston get a set shot and miss to go to 2 pts. We rush it back the other way top Granty. 40/45 degree. Hits the behind post on the full!!!!! Seems we are out of luck.

Stacky then bobs up, runs, tackles, forward pressure, gets the ball and kicks the most amazing 30 metre pass that was never higher than 1m off the ground to a Willi player in the corridor 30 out. Willi are back in front! Thats the 16mi mark. Stacky then got another opportunity to have shot which he should of but tried to do the team thing but didn't comer off and it didn't quite work. Frankston run it out, but it come back to a one/one contest with Grant his tall dfeneder and Grant takes a ripping grab, and converts, Willi by10.

Frankston take the ball down there end but we just touch it on the line, Back to 9pt lead to Willi. As we move the ball up the ground a very, very obvious free for Willi was missed for Frankston bomb the ball from 60m or so and it goals. Lead only 3pts.

Ward gets another tough ball and pinpoints a target in our 50 who converts and we're back to 9pts, but not happy. Matty Little had a masive shot and went top 10pts. Ward gets another hard ball get and gets to Gtant again one on one but is rushed over the line. 11 pts. We musted another behind with Stacky who should have tried for a ridaculous goal, but did the unselfish thing and a point was rushed 12 pts even.

Oh no, you think, the dreaded draw.

Frankston run the ball up and the ball fell over the pack to a Frankston player who makes it 6 points at the 32 minute mark.

Luckily we hold on. Escape and should be charged with theft.

Great game, great atmosphere and all that. Sensational weather too.

    Player reviews:

Skipper: won the tap outs. But for me, it was like Street winning the tap outs. I didn't rate it as highly as past weeks would have indicated.
Stacky: I am biased. He needs to play AFL. He is just like Josh Hill, yes he will frustrate and do some silly decision making, but he plays as well as he can against his opponennts. Play him soon.
Ward: Recall anybody? AMazing quarter to steal a match!
Grant: Despite a few key moments, was very, very, very quite. very.
    Reid: Barely noticed him.
O'Keefe: I like his game and style. Hope he gets a run soon enough.
Wood: A bit like reid io didn't notice him too much.
Tim Callan: Needs some more time in the VFL i think, wasn;t a great game today by his standards.
DFA: Didn't do enough in my book to earn a recall.
Henry White: I quite like him, i question his defencive side though.

Will try to answer as many questions as possible, I have a mothers day dinner so i will answer them in a few hours.

Great to hear Liam Jones showed some promise. Seems the reports about him were correct.

Great report - very cultural, nice win in a close game - sounds like it was a memorable Mother's Day for you!

Seems Cal Ward was kicking major butt, looks like he will be a very good player for us.

                  Nice work, good read.

Very pleasing about Jones, and like you hope Stacky can get a game soon.

Ward would be close to a recall too.

                  No Tiller?
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Tiller carrying a strain I think.

But Jones, if it is the case we only have him for 2 or 3 more weeks, get down and watch him. Just be careful how close you stand to other people, i know is he young and will take a few years, but boy he was miles ahead of VFL ressies which is a great sign for a kid in year 12, especially a KPP. All this talk of Roughy and Cordy and Grant, I'll let others do that. His performance was amazing, so good, they played him back in the last quarter, like in under 12s with the mercy rule.

Stacky could be anything, like the comment you can only play as well as your opponent allows you to. I think thats him. He can do some bloody amazing things with a football that boy.

Also spoke to my cousin who is a trainer with Willi in the huddle of all places.

I asked how the ntransition over from Collingwood to WBFC has been. She instantly lit up and said great. She said Collingwood were overly professional and sucked the life out of the club.

She said the doggies guys were still as professional but very laid back and a much happier bunch of guys.

Thought that w as interesting from her perspective.

I personally think that Roughead will be the best tap ruckman drafted by any AFL team over the last 3 years.

Cordy has the most amazing atheticism for a kid so tall. His skills below his knees are sensational-will be a great forward.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

BT how the hell did you remember all that. Thank you for the report, sounds like a great game and some high scoring. I have been excited about Stack for a long time and can't wait till he gets his chance. Ward is very raw but all guts and reminds me a bit of how Higgins started off a few years ago, he will be a gun.

                              Brilliant report BT.

Thats great news about Jones. We all know that Cordy will be great, and from all reports Roughead is an absolute belter, but Jones I wasn't so sure about. To hear of "movement"-worthy domination is fantastic.
