A 29-YEAR-OLD football player is being interviewed by police after allegedly punching a 16-year-old umpire.

The Rockbank player reportedly reacted angrily when the youth sent him off the ground.

He handed himself into police after the umpire complained about the alleged assault.

The teen umpire was concussed as a result of the incident.

Absolute disgrace.

Reading on other forums, it was a big hit & the kid was knocked out.

Just heard about this on the Sunday Footy Show.

The bloke who did it should be banned from every league everywhere for life, not to mention the criminal conviction sure to be coming his way.

And they wonder why people don't want to be umpires...

*Shudders* As a first year 17 year old umpire thats the last thing you want to think about before umpiring a match. I feel sorry for the kid. He must be a decent umpire to be umpiring men at 16.

The player was actually in the midst of being sent off for hitting former Essendon player Gary Moorecroft or so I am told. Hope the club doesn't get punished for the stupid act of one player. They are a bit of a rabble Rockbank but like any club they have lots of hard working volunteers. Would be a shame if the club fell apart after this.

Should be banned for life, receive a criminal conviction & as part of his sentence he should have to umpire football for 3 years at some level without payment.

Agreed.

Getting $1500 a game at Romsey at the moment. Not easy to stop at that level so he will get a few guys giving him some attention.

It's this sort of thing that will lead to club volunteers umpiring matches, with their bias which spirals into more angst. I remember asking club team managers for the police to attend the game as an umpire on a few occasions. There needs to be a new culture in which we see umpires. The whole acceptability of 'white maggot' and clubs not enforcing codes against the 'ugly parent syndrome' in junior ranks is crap.

Not that I know of but a big sign on fee as well. He had kicked 6 half way through the second when the game was called off apparently. Wont be putting my hand up to play on him.

It is terrible for the umpires. Last thing we need is to lose any umpires as we have a real shortage as it is.

Good chance it might go back to clubs supplying people to umpire. And the bias, intended or not, creates more animosity.

This should also be regarded as an unprovoked attack on a minor I would have thought. If so, the only games of footy he should be allowed to umpire should be between cell block A and B.

I wouldn't play if that happened. I get frustrated enough as it is. Dont think I could handle volunteers doing it.
