Patrick Rose for a rookie spot

This has been written about and touted for a couple of week so I was wondering if the Williamstown watchers think this would be a good move for the club?

I'm against getting Patrick Rose as a rookie for a few reasons.

It's a great offer by Williamstown to fund a player for us but I don't think this one will work anywhere near as well as Liam Picken has.

Do you think Matt Little has anything to offer in a 2nd run at AFL level or does he fall into the category of good VFL player/not quite up to AFL (The Nick Sautner standard)? I know he can't be rookied but in the next couple of years we will lose 3 or 4 of our mid sized forwards.

Are you still writing the club daily to use the rookie spot on Dane Rampe?

I have to agree. Even though i think Rose is an exciting small forward, i'm sure we could do alot better. IMO we need to look outside the square with our rookie spots and experiment with some X factor type players.

          Like whom?

Malcolm Lynch was seen to be a player with X-factor, but he is languishing in the Williamstown reserves.

Rose works harder than pretty much any other forward at Willy (Little would have an argument, but he's been tried before at AFL level). He isn't an x-factor small forward, he leads and presents which means he'd work in our forwardline if we had an injury to cover.

Because of his age and the fact that he has already been on an AFL list I don't believe that Matthew Little can be rookied. I stand to be corrected though.
So for me it's either a senior spot on the list or he stays at Williamstown.

One of my concerns about adding Rose to the rookie list is that he would then count as a Bulldog listed player when he plays for Williamstown meaning that another Bulldog player could be puhed back into the 2nds. Thats all good and well if Rose is good enough to play 5 games for the Bulldogs but I don't think he is capable of that. Picken however proved me (very) wrong because I thought 5 games would see him out.

It's a terrific offer by Williamstown and it must be tempting for a club that runs on such a tight budget but I'd want them to give it a bit more thought.
Do we really want the likes of Easton Wood potentially playing 2nds football next season?

Re: Patrick Rose for a rookie spot

Given at least 2 retirements, with Wight & Skip possible delistings, that's 3 extra players who can play willy firsts if Rose is rookied. Liam Jones will probably spend the year in the 2nds due to development, and we haven't considered injury listings as yet either. I think overall we'll be ok in developing players (although there will still be concerns if list cloggers get Willy senior time - hopefully we wont have to worry next year).

The only caveat to that is this year's draft seems to be heavy on midfielders meaning we're likely top have a few guys come onto the list who are likely to push for senior selection quicker than a developing tall. In any case I like the look of Rose, he's been more of a presence there than any Bulldog listed tall this season and Eade is on record that he'd play a good player ahead of a tall player so he may fit.

I certainly think he's more of a chance to play senior football next year than other first year rookies we've taken such as Daniels, Mulligan, White etc.

Good point. I doubt he has the ability of Liam Picken either.

Rose is one of the best footballers in the VFL, is still fairly young and clearly better than several on our list. This would make him an ideal candidate for a rookie spot if he isn't snapped up earlier.
