Roughead is one good news story for mine. He looks like he will definately make the grade, has a decent size.

Not sure if he'll be ruckman no 3 (first back-up) in 2010 but he'd be looking for senior time in 2011 based on his progress so far.

Williamstown loses VFL qualifying final to the Northern Bullants

      Chris Mitchell | September 07, 2009 12:00am

CHRIS Johnson's season ended in disappointment yesterday after the Carlton recruit suffered concussion early in yesterday's VFL match at Burbank Oval.
The defender was promising with four early possessions, before being stretchered off the ground after an accidental knee in the head from a marking contest in the first quarter of the Bullants' 29-point qualifying-final win against Williamstown.

With Carlton's season over and not having qualified for the VFL finals, it was a headache the former Melbourne player will have time to recover from.

"Unfortunately, that's his last game for the year," Bullants coach David Teague said.

"Carlton are out, he can't play any more. It was a great effort. He went back and sat under a high ball, and I think he copped a knee in the head. No malice in it."

The incident took the gloss off a big win for the Bullants, who will now have a week off before playing in a preliminary final in a fortnight.

Williamstown has six days to regroup for Saturday's cut-throat second semi-final against Collingwood at TEAC Oval.

But the Seagulls might be without defender Tim Callan, whose 32 possession-game put him in the frame for promotion to the Western Bulldogs on Friday.

"He would be right in the mix, you'd think, based on that," Williamstown coach Brad Gotch said.

The Bullants trailed by three points at quarter-time, but booted 4.7 in the second term to take a 24-point lead into the main break.

With midfielders David Ellard (33 possessions), Jordan Bannister (23) and captain Adam Iacobucci firing, the Bullants extended the margin to six goals at three-quarter time.

To make matters worse for Williamstown, forward/midfielder Guy O'Keefe suffered a knee injury in the last quarter.

Ruckman Wayde Skipper, who impressed with 29 hitouts, 20 possessions and five mark, had a tough battle with Carlton rookie Sam Jacobs (26 hitouts; 19 disposals) and Robbie Warnock (16 hitouts; 11 disposals).

Bulldog utility Andrejs Everitt was quiet, with just 12 disposals playing off a wing and pinch-hitting across half-forward and half-back, while half-forward Brennan Stack did not kick a goal from 16 disposals and four marks.

Teague, who will have the luxury of Carlton players Cameron Cloke, Jeff Garlett and Shaun Grigg for the preliminary final, is out of contract at season's end, but said he was keen to continue next season.

Box Hill ended Geelong's season with a 34-point win at TEAC Oval yesterday.

Wood: Had a solid game i thought compared to most players out there, but not his best game.
Callan: Easily the best on the ground for Willi, was just a tough competitor who hates getting beaten.
Boumann: Was the one that caught my eye out of all the boys today, has had a very good few weeks and was good again yeasterday. What i loved seeing from him though was his aggression at his much bigger opponent (Warnock), Warnock ended up having a ripped jumper by the end of Boumann egtting into him and having a bit of a scuffle. His ball use, run and one on one work was all very good i thought
Tiller: As mentioned earlier, tried hard but things just didnt go his way. Had some good pack spoils
Everitt: To be honest i didnt notice much of him yesterday.
Addison: Another tough day for Addison, and like Callan just hates being beaten, not a bad game for him.
Reid: I thought he just didnt look like himself all day, looks like his groins are troubling him, laid some great tackles dispite this though and in particular a very good bump which may have seen him reported? (nothing in it if he was).
Stack: Looked great when he had the ball, quick and exciting but in a bad day for Willi he probably just didnt get enough of it as the team would have liked.
O'Keefe: Watch him a little bit, and for mine he just did not work hard enough when he was in the middle, when the ball went into the defensive 50 he would almost stop still in the middle of the ground, wait for a turn-over and then start running to get on the end of a kick because he was free. PLayed better in the last quarter finding a bit of the pill but unfortunately it was a bit too late.
Roughead: Up against two big ruckman who from all reports have been doing very well. He tried hard all day but just didnt seem to have the touch he did the week before, fumbling and dropping marks at certain times
Skipper: Competed very hard all day against the two bigger boys and didnt do too badly, not a big day by his standards though

Sorry if i sound a little negative in the review but over all their wasnt too much that went right for the boys yesterday in what was an average game for Williamstown. Hopefully the guys can pick up the tempo for next weeks game against the Collingwood mob!

Comrade, could Bou be a surprise call-up to play as a tall defender if Williams is not fit. Seems to have the form over Tiller and Wight, and Everitt can't do it?

I can't imagine Eade being that bold, but I'd love to see it!

But in all seriousness, he'd probably struggle at this stage of his development. Give him another pre-season and it'd be a completely different proposition.

              1. Stack's kicking was a pleasure to watch. His kick which resulted in Willi's last goal was a ripper. I agree that he doesn't find enough of it, but he has some talent.

              2. O'Keefe - We made comment that Guy was part of the 'Speed' movie. If he stood outside the centre square for more than 30 secs his leg would be blown off.

I was never a big believer in Boumann, didn't think he would be able to cut the mustard. Gee is he starting to prove me wrong, and i am loving the fact that he is doing it. I hope he keeps on improving & gets a senior call up next season, another big body down back, is just what the doctor ordered.

And comrade, i am getting ready to jump on the Boumann wagon.
