    Bulldogs dump Gotch, seek new VFL coach

    THE WESTERN Bulldogs are on the lookout for a new VFL and development coach after the club announced it would not renew Brad Gotch's contract at the end of the 2009 season.

    Gotch has overseen the development of the club's youngsters and coached VFL affiliate Williamstown for the past two years after the Dogs switched their alignment from Werribee at the end of the 2007 season.

    The Seagulls enjoyed a strong home-and-away season to finish second on the ladder in 2009 but exited the finals in straight sets.

      The correct move in my opinion. Gotch has been good but he hasn't been stern enough with the players to get that much more out of them.

          He upset the boss when he dropped Boumann and left Wight in the side while the Dogs were playing interstate. He had been given specific instructions not to.

              That's a sackable offence in and of itself.

                      I hope the next person who fills this role puts developing our kids as his no.1 priority.

                      Sure you don't want a Bendigo situation, but I couldn't give a rats if games are lost if it somehow benefits the Bulldogs future.

                          Who are the possible candidates?

                          I'd really like the club to look at someone like Rohan Smith.
                          Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

                              With no disrespect meant to Smith there will be a heap of potential coaches around with far more experience. Smith would need an apprenticeship in my eyes

                              Experienced heads like

                              Brian Royal
                              Gary Ayers

                              And then guys with assistant experience are out there
                              Scott West
                              David King
                              Anthony Rock

                                  Fair enough.

                                  I was under the impression Smithy had been doing a bit of coaching work/development this year as well as his media commitments but perhaps I'm mistaken.
                                  Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

                                      I agree, but am unsure how sustainable this really is.

                                      The appointed coach of Williamstown is going to want to win games of football & will more than likely be coaching for today, not tomorrow.

                                      Not exactly sure how to overcome this impasse, particularly if the appointed coach has aspirations.

                                                      Has to win games for Willy but it would be nice to see our players given more important roles etc

                                                      Good opportunity to shake things up at Willy - its absolutely crucial we get this setup right if we ever want to win premierships
