    Williamstown changes - 2010

The rumour mill over at vflfooty.com is suggesting a number of changes to the Willy list next year.

Meyer, Langlands, Keddell, Galea and Jason Cloke are all reportedly moving on. I believe O’Shea will be heading back to QLD.

Dylan Joyce is apparently heading to South Australia if he isn’t picked up by an AFL club, and you would imagine that Wight and Skipper will find other clubs.

Does anyone else have any insight on further list changes?

    Good changes

We need our players given more central roles in the team. Nothing Jason Cloke can do IMO that Steve Tiller cant etc

Williamstown still require a core of non Bulldog players.

Even with every Bulldog listed player available they are still required (under VFL rules) to field about 10 VFL listed players. This applies to all clubs with an AFL affiliate but not to the stand alone teams if I have the correct understanding.

A few of the players like Meyers are moving to the bush leagues so it's going to be new look Williamstown side that rolls out in 2010.

Is that mainly because of money?

Meyer got dropped to the reserves a couple of times during the season so it might be a combination of good money and a realisation that playing for an aligned side is minimising his chances to play senior football each week.

Good news for us, hope they don't get many replacements. These 2nd tier/depth VFL players hurt our guys development.

You are aware of the limits on how many AFL players can be selected each week aren't you?

I thought the limits only applied when you are playing a stand alone team like Frankston, are I misguided in my thoughts?

And also, (and this is speculation on my behalf) I know I'd rather our youngsters playing in a decent team and having to earn their place in the B's senior line up. Getting belted every week, or getting promoted without the required form can't be good for their development.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I should have been a bit clearer when responding to Rocco. I believe that the arrangement we have with Williamstown means that a maximum of 12 Bulldog listed players can be selected in the senior side each week.

                        Re: Williamstown changes - 2010

I think people have to realise that, if a Bulldogs listed player is simply not showing signs and not working hard enough, why should he be promoted in front of a Williamstown listed player?

Take Tim Walsh as an example a few years back, alot of people were saying at the time, but Pods is holding back the likes of Skipper & Walsh who would both play in that position, yet, where are they now?

I understand that we need our players to be best developed as they possibly can, but they also need to play in a decent side as well, Boumann was a good case of a player knocking the door down to play in the ones, the player holding him out was another Bulldogs listed player in Cam Wight, he got his chance and held that spot, and he was made to work hard and play consistant footy in the 2's to get that spot, i don;t mind players being made to earn a position and not getting a free ride, look at most rookies as a prime example of having to work their arses off to get on a list for starters, and then show what it takes to make the grade.

Roughead could have played 2's all year, but showed enough signs to be promoted and play pretty well in the ones, Lynch is another prime example who could be playing in the ones week in week out, yet doesn't do the hard yards to give himself enough of an opportunity to play decent football on a consistant basis, Stacky has, and did hold his position, enough to even get in a few AFL games.

That's been my argument for ages. A lot of people just want our players in the firsts regardless of their form. Let them earn it.
Funny enough not many people whinged about Grant being dropped to the magoos though.

I thought the limit only applied to games against stand alone clubs, but regardless, I would much rather the Williamstown spots be taken up by guys filling out the 22 than guys like Jason Cloke who fill valuable role.

I must also say that I don't blame Williamstown for trying to win games of footy. We can't afford a stand alone VFL side and relatively speaking, it seems like we have a healthy alignment.

I agree in part. It's healthy to make the player earn his spot but I think we've struggled to develop a few players because of the AFL/VFL alignment. Grant being played out of position can't be great. He might find more fitness playing as that roaming CHF but he's probably losing confidence too. I'm happy for players to be dropped based on form and obviously he wasn't performing, but in an ideal world we would likely play him out of the square. He hasn't been able to learn about this position at senior footy yet.

Didn't Boumann also get dropped halfway through the year despite his good form? Fairly sure Wight took his spot. It might have only been for a week or two, but again - it's not great development if he can't keep moving forward.

I suppose it can be argued keeping Wight for as long as we did caused this, too.

I think the alignment works at about 85%. It's pretty good, but there's a few things we'd like to change if we could.
