    Your Draft Bolter?

There is a 100's of phantom drafts being posted on the internet and news services at the moment but I'd like to hear some names of players that you think might go higher than most are predicting them to?
I contacted Gvg and he has given me three names but I'd like to hear a few more.

Anyone prepared to throw a few names into the hat?

    Yeah.

Mature age players who will be drafted/rookied:

    - Ben Howlett
    - Ben Stratton
    - Trent Dennis-Lane
    - Ashton Hams
    - Kyle Hams

As for the u18's, if you want to know who is going to get drafted look at 2 things:
    1/.AIS Squad from last year
    2/.Draft camp invites.

When you continue to read about a player being drafted - Chris Luff and Joel Houghton are good examples from WA - but they didn't get draft camp invites, that tends to mean that they are going to be overlooked. Last year a massive number of players were drafted yet only 20 were picked up who didn't attend draft camp...

So - look at the invite list. Pick the names no-one is talking about and call them bolters! They aren't really bolters - at least 4 clubs have included them on a list of 50 nominations - but in the eyes of the public....
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I have no idea what respective clubs are thinking, but just to throw some names out there (some of these may not be considered bolters - haven't been reading many phantoms lately):

Jake Carlisle (top 10 - recruiters love lots of upside, this guy has it having grown a heap lately and being a late starter)

Nathan Vardy (top 11 - due to the lack of decent ruckman in this draft it's hard to see him getting past the Dees)

Mitch Duncan (top 15 - football all-rounder with strong credentials and good form at WAFL league level in the 2nd half of the season)

Ryan Bastinac (top 15 - classy midfielder that was impressive in the TAC GF)

James Craig (top 30 - strong, high leaping undersized ruck that could develop into a solid key defender)

Joel Houghton (top 30 - athletic key forward that didn't stand out in the championships but was good at colts)

Anthony DelBorello (top 30 - talented medium forward/midfielder with a similar style to LeCras that
was ruled out for the season through injury 6 games in)

Some talked about names that I think will go on the early side of expectations:

Majak Daw - North at 53
Daniel Talia - Carlton at 12
Lewis Jetta - WCE at 7
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

I think Stevo is looking more towards how a guy Mackie jumped up the pecking order (after a state screening test) than well known players like Jetta and Talia.

                Top 30 for Houghton?

Wont happen. Will be lucky to be drafted. Another who didn't go to draft camp and testing results were only average at state screening. Top 30? Aint gonna happen.

As an aside, when you say he was 'good at colts', I am interested in how many of those games you watched?

All of that said, I totally agree with you on Del Borrello (West Perth edition) but again - you have him listed very high...when you consider he is in the National U19 cricket squad and has not even nominated for the draft yet, it is a big call he would go so high.

To Jasper who asked about draft camp invites, there is a heap of that stuff on the AFL website...Matt Burgan even broke them down by position group. You just have to look.

Josh Thomas from the Gold Coast really stood out as a classy onballer however, I thought he was tied to them. A couple of months back he declined the GC offer and has been linked to the Pies.

I've had a good look and can't find anything that shows the which clubs nominated which players.

                      Re: Your Draft Bolter?

I saw all his championships game, but only saw him 3 times at colts (EP @ Subi Oval, vs Claremont @ Claremont x2) where he was BOG (but poor opposition), amongst the best and decent. Was the 2nd leading goal kicker overall with 45.26 from 18 games (missed 4? with championships commitments - though there weren't many challengers TBF) and was named FF in the colts TOTY. I'm just guessing - I don't have him as a top 30 prospect, but there are a few clubs with picks inside 30 that may be keen to get a young key forward prospect that miss out in the first round, which may bump up the demand for him.

Burgan put ADB in the 20-50 range in one of his articles, so it would seem he is some chance of him going as a 2nd round pick.

                        Re: Your Draft Bolter?

Fair enough - though the Claremont defense was pretty handy in 2009.

The thing with Houghton is he is a key forward who doesn't lead. He stands in the goal-square, plays from behind and tries to 'pluck it' from over the back. He DOES have good recovery skills and I would have said 20+ of his goals were from snap-shots in the 10-15m range.

The champs were a case in point - kicked 4 against NT, but 3 came in the last 10-15 minutes...poor opposition, game nailed and he gets a couple...I just dont rate him at all. From Perth, I much prefer Haydn Busher as a kpp.

Yep, I agree on this one, something about him. Just a smooth mover, runs and carries and his disposal is good.

Mark Hutchings is another for me. I think his outside work is under-rated, and he has played senior footy this year and done ok from what I can tell.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Can't imagine Bulldog supporters screaming out, "Come on Jesper Mc Millian - Pittard"
