    Rookie upgrades set for draft

By Ben Broad 7:45 PM Fri 13 November, 2009

ELEVATED rookies will share in the limelight at the NAB AFL Draft with those players to have their names read out on November 26.

In previous seasons, players who have earned an upgrade to their club's senior list have not been part of draft day. Instead, they have done so in relative anonymity through standard lodgement with the AFL.

That means Adelaide, which will promote Brodie Martin, will select players with picks 13, 29, 45 and 61 before announcing Martin at 74.

I don't mind it but I'm not sure what value it adds?
Every Bulldogs supporter has seen Liam Picken and James Mulligan has been at the club for two seasons.
They have already been drafted by the club, albeit as rookies, so I'm not sure why we are going through it again. They have been upgraded not drafted by us and the whole draft day should be about introducing new players to their new clubs.

I guess it's part of the fact that you don't need to (national) draft a minimum of 3 players to the club every year.

Slightly off topic, will naming the top 10 players in reverse order add to the excitement of the day?

Hmm this really disappoints me regarding draft day. Why would they do this? doesnt make any sense to add excitement. EVERYONE knows that Melb will take Trengrove and Scully. The only excitement will only be from picks 10 to 4. Id rather it stay the old way and if say Freo pass on Morabito then we would wait to see how far he dropped, hopefully dropping other players that we want at the dogs.

Most years anyone who knows anything about the young draftees can pretty much pick the top 10 (maybe not in order), but have a fair idea of who the 10 will be. So this reverse order idea is worthless in my opinion.

I think its better to hear "pick 1 melbourne....player 2567851? Tom Scully" from the get go.
I will never see #16 the same!!

Being cynical: is it just to stop it looking like not that many kids were drafted this year?

And make it look like the draft gives lots of players an opportunity?

I just don't get what this change will add to the day/night.

I don't think it's a bad idea to get some picks done before it goes live because it will allow for a more polished TV coverage but if we are picking them in one order why are we reversing it for the fans for just 10 picks?
I agree with Sockeye, on face value it's just stupid.

People that follow the draft and have done for years would see through that in a heartbeat though plus I think it's more TV driven than anything else.

The major beneficiary of the change may well be Melbourne who have pick 11.

Previously pick 11 followed directly after pick 10, so there wasn't a whole lot of time to discuss matters.

With a decent break between the first 10 selections & Melbourne's pick 11, they have ample time to put a bit of thought into it if someone throws a curve ball in the first 10 picks.

There is no problems with having a break and I think all clubs following pick 10 will benefit by it but I do challenge why it's better for the audience to countdown from 10 to 1 instead of following the normal current process.

I feel sorry for the kid who goes pick 2.

As they count down the top 10, each kid will get a bit of a wrap. When the announce pick 2 it becomes obvious who pick 1 is and pick 1 will get the attention and the kid who's just gone pick 2 will get fresh-aired.

Will they announce the top 10 picks in alphabetical/any random order before televising pick 11? If they don't, it will make the first few televised picks feel a bit odd because we will not know the players available. Would make a poor idea even poorer.

They will actually draft the players 1 to 10 but when it gets on the tele, pick 10 will be the first one called then 9 and 8 etc counting down to pick 1.

                          Such a stupid, pointless concept.

The first few picks are generally a formality. It's much more exciting to hear the players numbers read out from 1-10.

Having it reversed spoils the anticipation.

Just trying to follow the 20-1 show and the other one with Magda, bowing to the media.

I dont even think the number 1 will get the attention he usually gets because of this, he will be last one read out so they wont be going to him in between picks because that would give it away, one interview after the pick and thats it.
