    Williamstown 2010 List Taking Shape

    2:45 PM Wed 06 January, 2010

Williamstown Football Club heads into 2010 having already contracted 33 players, including 14 new and exciting players to the Seagulls.

19 Players from the 2009 list have recommitted to Williamstown which includes team leaders Brett Johnson and Ben Jolley. Regular Senior players Matthew Little, David Stretton, Ben Davies and Cameron Lockwood are on board in 2010 and a group of players who have been around the mark at senior level in the past including Luke Cartelli, Matthew Cravino, Matthew Grossman, Dean Muir, Michael Tanner and Josh Young now have the chance to play more regular senior football.

Developing players Dylan Ayton, Nick Di Martino, Jordan Florance, Jacob Graham, Richard Knight, Trent Lee and Nathan Uren will all be endeavouring to cement permanent positions at Reserves level which will hopefully lead to senior opportunities.

It's not looking too bad although they have lost a lot of experience. I'd question the logic in maintaining Egan even if he gets himself fit. Good to see Rampe sticking with the Seagulls.

Looks like a good list coming together again for Willy, maybe 2010 Doggies/Willy premiership year!

Though I don't get the acquisition of Peter Faulks? Didn't we just draft Markovic as a CHB, we still have Tiller coming back from groin surgery (although he doesn't really play as KP) and also grooming Mulligan as a key back. I guess Peter German was always going to bring some players across from Casey... Does anyone know where we plan to play him?

Also does anyone know the rules about how many dogs players can play in the Willy side? It looks like we are starting to get some good depth but can we play all of them in the Willy seniors?

      Cheers

This has been discussed quite a few times, but since you ar a noob I will go over it again.

There are no set rules to how many AFL listed players you can play UNLESS you are playing a stand alone team (such as Frankston). In this instance there is a 12 (AFL)/10 (VFL) rule.

I guess though Williamstown won't be keen on not having a strong representation of it's VFL players in the team so it will be a bit of a juggling act.

Welcome to the WOOF board HawkinsWestMissy, as others will have alerted you we had a discussion about this some few weeks ago and now we feel we are on top of it.

As I understand it the only rules that apply are when The SeaDogs ie Willie play against stand alone clubs like Port, but other than on those occasions open slather seems to apply.

That said our VFL affiliate has to maintain its own identity in the eyes of its supporters and sponsors and so will have a core of its players who will play most games.

There has been a big turn over at Willie in the off season and the Willie list has not yet been finalised so the the exact proportions of Willie players vs the AFL listed players is not clear at this point in time.

Be interesting to see how Willie goes under German & Co, given as stated earlier they have had a pretty major clear out of both Gulls and Doggies from the 09 ranks. Still jointly they appear to have added some serious senior VFL grunt to their existing senior core [ Moles, Markovic, Faulks].
Yeah good to see that Rampe stayed put, as he looks to have some thing, just needs a little development time. Pity young Joyce chose to move on though, even though he looked like he was recruited from the local primary school, he also showed a lot of potential.

I'm reasonbly confident he will be a great fit for us, alot more so than Gotch, seemed like a nice guy, but too nice in a way, besides, anyone that went to any Willy games and went into the huddles at 1/4 & 3/4 times, would understand how god damn hard it was to hear every word..in fact, hear anything that came out of his mouth, he is very quietly spoken.

But German has been around the traps for a long time now, and coaching his own sides, did he have a stint at Subiaco? anyway, looking forward to seeing what he brings.

Being quietly spoken at huddles does not preclude someone from being a good coach

German has coached his own teams in the WAFL, VFL and TFL and been an assistant at three AFL clubs - Hawthorn, West Coast & Freo.

He is clearly experienced and its going to be very interesting how our young players respond to his instructions, and to see where they fit into Willys plans

Re: Williamstown 2010 List Taking Shape

I found the following post from the VFL Footy forum that appears to have come from the original article in this thread but goes into a little further detail with regards to some extra pickups etc.

Williamstown Football Club heads into the Christmas break having contracted 33 players which includes 14 new players to the Seagulls.

The promising Dane Rampe who completed the pre-season with the Western Bulldogs will return to Melbourne in the New Year from Sydney and will look to cement himself in the Senior side whilst Chris Egan is still endeavouring to prove his fitness to retain his spot on the Williamstown List in 2010.

The most pleasing aspect of this pre-season has been the acquisition of exciting youngsters from TAC Cup Clubs, country Victoria and the Amateurs. From the Western Jets Michael Fogarty, Dion Lawson and Tyler Healy join the Seagulls and from the Sandringham Dragons come Jack Purton-Smith and Kwame McHarg. Jye Sandiford and Brian Fenton join Williamstown from the Bendigo Pioneers and Adam Marangon has been an impressive recruit from Old Melbournians. Key recruit will be Peter Faulks from the Casey Scorpions who established himself as one of the best key defenders in the competition and Tom German will add to our midfield strength joining the club after a season on Essendon’s Rookie List.

Jake Wilson is an impressive young forward from Portland who has settled into Melbourne whilst Hayden Armstrong is a developing young tall from Marist College in the ACT. Phil Smith and Jake De Sousa join Williamstown from rival VFL Clubs Box Hill and Coburg. Smith came through the successful Calder Cannons program before a season with the Brisbane Lions as a Rookie in 2008 before joining Box Hill in 2009. De Sousa played with the Western Jets before playing the last four seasons with Coburg.

Another 10 recruits will be contracted in January 2010.
