Just wondering the reaction from our South Australians that the much loved Port Adelaide [SANFL} version are being given the flick at seasons end?

Re: Port Adelaide Gone!
Rumours of their death are greatly exaggerated.
The League directors had to vote on whether they should be allowed to merge with the Power, and they said no. Basically as both clubs are stuffed financially (sound familiar?) and the proposed business model wasn't feasible.
Is a ground swell of ferals over here signing on-line petitions (dunno how that would help one jot) to keep them going.
The SANFL has allready paid them this years dividend in advance, so unless they raise a lot of cash quick they will need to sell their only asset (a pub) to reduce debt. But they don't have anywhere near enough income to keep on trading as they are now.
I hope they do find a white knight and keep playing, but also hope they get the spoon for the next 258 years.
If I was one of the league directors over here i'd vote to get rid of Central Districts. -
Re: Port Adelaide Gone!
It would be a crying shame for such a successful club to be wound up. The AFL and the various state leagues have a lot of work in front of them to ensure clubs are not lost.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: Port Adelaide Gone!
The big mistake was trying to maintain both clubs in the two competitions.
They should have simply said we are now in the AFL and move the whole operation to supporting that vision.
Both operations are loss-making concerns and neither the SANFL or AFL will tolerate the Magpies bleeding the Power any further. And that's precisely what would have happened under the proposed merger.Comment

Re: Port Adelaide Gone!
As a Norwood supporter and a fan of the long standing rivalry we have with the Port Magpies I think it would be a shame for them to get the boot.
That being said, there needs to be a feasible plan that will allow them to survive. I'm not sure what the answer is but I hope they can come up with something.Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?Comment

Re: Port Adelaide Gone!
The league stuffed this one up when they insisted the Power be formed as a separate club. They should have stayed as one club with the seconds playing in the SANFL.FFC: Established 1883

Therefore the real problem may have been that the Power took the larger slice of the Alberton brains trust and a lack of onfield success coupled with less offield experience is a bad combo. Kinda like a vegie burger with a side of coleslaw.Comment

Re: Port Adelaide Gone!
From what I understand (as explained to me by the nephew of a former Power CEO) when the Power was created the Port Magpies were actually left in a pretty good position in terms of assets and cash.

Re: Port Adelaide Gone!
As much as I've never been a fan of anything to do with the Port Adelaide Football Club or its supporters (The Eagle and Monty trades aside), if Port Magpies were to go under it would be a tragedy for South Australian Football and Football in general.
Like the situation with Carlton through the early part of the decade, it's a timely reminder that history and tradition are no substitue for strong, competent management.Comment
