Re: TAC Cup 2010
Mathew Smith (Smiley) is actually a Darwin boy, but his dad is in the army - stationed at Pucka. He is related to Ceril Rioli - second cousin or something - oh and he is a committed bulldog memberThere was a number 51 - Smith, who played close on Libratore in the second half. He did a good job quietening him down. I think they were about even possession wise for the time they played on each other. Smith and Cannon's Grenfell played together at Seymour last year. No pedigree in either, but both handy players. Smith is bottom age too.

He played for the Murray Bushrangers last year - and was part of the NT Indigenous team which played against other states. A really quality kid and 110% committed to football - watches his diet, keeps himself fit and is mature beyond his years. He turns 17 in May and has just joined the leadership team at the Jets.Comment

Re: TAC Cup 2010
From the TAC website he was second in the best's list.
Their stats list is hard to read but he had:
5 Kicks Effective
1 Kicks Ineffective
12 Handballs effective
3 Handballs ineffective
5 handballs received
2 tackles
2 uncontested marks
This week Calder had a loss to the knights,
Tom was best on ground for the Cannons:
"For Calder midfielder Tom Liberatore (27 possessions, 11 tackles) was sensational in close with his handballing to a teammate’s advantage a major highlight, but also his defensive pressure. "
His stats on the website were as follows:
1 goal
4 marks
9 kicks effective
3 kicks ineffective
12 handballs effective
3 hb ineffective
5 hb received
11 tackles
3 FF
2 FA
1 contested mark
3 uncontested marks
I think by anyones standards he has had a pretty good game against a good opposition and in a losing side. I kind of like of the players that can perform well even when their side is getting beaten. It says a lot about their character and about them as a player.
Mitch Wallis again didn't play this week.Comment

Re: TAC Cup 2010
A quality match report from the Cannons/Knights game – via the Calder Cannons website:
Good to hear that Mitch Wallis is back this week.Good teams bounce back from adversity and Calder did just that after their loss to the Knights the previous week. They put the foot down from the start and despite another fade out towards the end, they set themselves up with a great first half of football.
Captain Prestia led the way with the first goal on the board in quick seconds when the midfield won the centre clearance and got it down to the forward area with little or no resistance from a sluggish Dandenong. Prestia would provide the impetus with a fine display in the midfield and also busy around the ground at the stoppages and contributing to the scoreboard as well.
He was ably supported again by Liberatore who just seems to know where and how to win the football. His quick hands seem to find a target and he too is part of a goal kicking midfield that Calder have had the pleasure of for many years.
Suprise packet Dylan Murphy was at his pit bull best, bobbing up all over the ground and is gaining in confidence each week, he put in his best game so far of the season and his play belies his smallish frame. Tenacious sums up Dylan and he squares off against bigger and taller opponents with no fear. Meli again showed he is dangerous as a crumbing forward and also leads up the ground to help out his midfielders gaining plenty of it. McLeod was outstanding around the ground and also the stoppages, combining with Schroder, Liberatore and Prestia at times to look the most dangerous midfield so far of the TAC. One that can only be stronger again with the return of Mitch Wallis.
Schroder has grown in stature over the pre season and although always unafraid he has shown improvement in his skills and his team attitude to bring his fellow players into the game is a great sign for the future. For awhile in the second quarter the game petered out to a game of stoppages and mistakes on both sides part, played between the two fifty metre zones. Both teams culpable and turning the ball over far too often for the coaches liking.
Enter Fraser Dale to steady the ship off the bench with 2 goals of his own giving the Calder onballers a chance to regroup and recover on what was a fairly warm day at Shepley Oval.
The third quarter had been Calder's nemesis last week but this week they did not let go, although tiring in the warm day they fought valiantly to hold Dandenong despite some panic in some decision making and not nailing their team targets as well as they had in the first half, they made sure they kept the advantage on the scoreboard. Harrison Huntley came off the bench and immediately had an impact which he carried into the last quarter having shots on goal and also taking a spectacular and balletic type mark on the Calder forward line.
Tired legs could be blamed for a last quarter fade out again by Calder allowing Dandenong the first 4 goals of the term but again to their credit Calder steadied. Tallan Wright contributed goals showing he too can play against taller opponents and be an option.
Coach Allison was pleased "That's the type of football you need to play to win TAC Cup games. i was pleased with the whole group and even though I still think we have improvement, the overall desire to win the footy was there today and that's a good sign for future weeks.'
Calder will be back at Visy next Sunday for their next game, a welcome return hopefully for Mitch Wallis into a winning Calder side. Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.Comment

Re: TAC Cup 2010
Looks like the Cannons went down to the Chargers by 2 points.
Mitch Wallis returned from injury to place 3rd in the bests with (25 possesions, 21 handball receives and 8 tackles).
Tom Liberatore went down with an injury early in the game and didn't return.
No mention of the extent.Comment

Re: TAC Cup 2010
What?! 21 handball receives is extraordinary. I'm not convinced it's a good extraordinary either. It would indicate that on 4 occasions or less Mitch won his own ball. When he gets to the AFL, we won't be handing the ball to him at every opportunity.Looks like the Cannons went down to the Chargers by 2 points.

Re: TAC Cup 2010
I wasn't at the game on the weekend, but Wallis' handball receive stats were pretty big last year also and I think it has more to do with his role within the team; the Cannons have some good in and under types (Prestia and Libba) so Mitch is able to perform more of an outside role. Because he's a very (very) good user of the ball and an on-field leader, the Cannons players look to dish it off to him at every opportunity - not unlike what happens at Geeling with Gazza.
Wallis can win his own ball, don't worry about that. Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.Comment

I'll take your word for it comrade, but I still think it's an unhealthy ratio.I wasn't at the game on the weekend, but Wallis' handball receive stats were pretty big last year also and I think it has more to do with his role within the team; the Cannons have some good in and under types (Prestia and Libba) so Mitch is able to perform more of an outside role. Re: TAC Cup 2010
As EJ Smith said in another thread, looking at raw stats can sometimes paint an inaccurate picture. The role a player has been asked to perform must be taken into account. For the record, Prestia had 25 handball receives from his 35 touches in the same game which could mean he's an outside midfielder; those who have seen him play know hats definitely not the case. Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.Comment
