I thought we may as well kick start an SANFL discussion thread for the 2010 season.

Sadly, my mighty Redlegs were disposed of convincingly by Guy O'Keefe's new side (and perpetual bottom dweller) South Adelaide on Friday night in a practice match.

My side was excluded from recruiting over the summer period (and also missed the SANFL mini-draft for the newly listed Crows and Power players) for breaching the salary cap - so we're in for another terrible year. New coach though, so who knows. A lot of key players have retired though, so I'm not too hopeful.

Both Glenelg and Centrals look like they will do well again this year, so looks like I could be on the receiving end of some banter again this year

I haven't had a real good look at the lists yet but judging on the partial info I have seen i think you could be right. Glenelg probably feel pretty hard done by after last year and I expect them to set the pace for most of the year, but I think Centrals will maintain their hold on the top three.

Apparently there is a fairly comprehensive SANFL mag coming out. Might have to grab a copy.

The Bays (Glenelg) have as good a first 23 or 24 players as any club, but our depth drops off badly after that.


Griff, are you going to the game Saturday @ the Bay?


And i had an amusing comversation with Nathan Basset at 1/4 time of the Bays/Port trial last week. He didn't know who our players were and i was pointing them out, may not have been entirely truthfull but ended up giving him a team sheet.

He admitted having enough trouble working out his own team to worry about other ones yet...



NB the Port Magpies played well, but the word is their side is very young and it could easily all turn to poo.

He admitted having enough trouble working out his own team to worry about other ones yet...

At this stage I probably won't - but I've got to have a chat with a mate who lives around the corner from me and is a big Glenelg fan. If I am going to go I'll get in contact with you.



Can't say that's very reassuring about poor old Bass, but hopefully he was just putting on an act to lull the rest of the competition into a false sense of security.

So...my mighty side was humiliated by T&T's side - must say I'm glad I decided not to head down to the bay I'm officially tipping my side for the wooden spoon at this point.... McGuinness (former Bulldogs player) was one of the few shining lights for the 'Legs.

South Adelaide (who I believe are being coached by a mate of mjp's?? may be mistaken) pulled off a terrific result drawing with Sturt, after belting my side in the trial matches. They are looking like a much improved outfit based on that performance.

Guy O'Keefe had a slightly disappointing 7 touches and kicked a lone goal, hardly inspiring stuff, but I'm sure he'll improve on that performance as the season progresses.

Centrals got over the line is a close-ish match against Port Adelaide, and look set for another good year.

My friend is the footy manager. South have recruited well...doesn't seem to be a limit on interstate players in the SANFL like there is in the WAFL - is that right?

There is a limit on interstate recruits starting next year (i think it is)

Will only be able to have XXX number of interstate recruits on your list at any one stage.

We have a points system.

Interstate + ex-AFL = 12points
Interstate + State League (inc TAC) = 10 Points
Interstate = 5 points
Other WAFL club + ex-AFL = 10 points
Other WAFL club = 7 points
Home grown (player from your zone) = 1 point

You are allowed 120 points in the entire club.

Makes it hard to drag yourself up if no juniors are coming through.

Without worrying about the points allocation, it sounds like an excellent system in theory. Would take some tinkering to get the breakdown right, I'd imagine.

There is also a limit on interstate players...I think it is 5 or 6.

The system solves the problem of clubs neglecting their allocated zone in favor of recruiting. It does create a challenge for struggling sides though - what exactly are you to do except wait?

Yay, Glenelg won again, we beat the Andy Collins coached West Adelaide by 3 or 4 goals, in one of the highest standard SANFL games I have seen for years. Kane Tenace starting to get there, had about 25 possessions.

Ex Hawthorn Rookie, Alex Grima (younger bro of Nathan, Holly and Todd) playing his second league game showed some blistering speed and kicked 5 goals from the flank. Ex Hawthorn Rookie Ruory Kirkby given best on by the Bays, for 6 goals in a dominant display @ CHF.

Glenelg u18 skipper from last year (and very unlucky not to get drafted) Andrew Bradley once again showed that he really belongs in a very cool and calm second league game.

A young lad named Josh Trembath, who was discussed as a draft potential last year, kicked 5 in the first quarter of the Magoos and ended up with 7.

In other games, last years spooners South beat this years spooners=to-be Norwood by a few points, and Port Magpies came second again (to the Eagles this time) and are yet to open their account.

Oh, and last years runners up (Sturt, boooo!) lost again, this time to North (boo them as well) and get to face their arch-rivals Glenelg this Saturday in front of what will be a bug crowd (at a tiny Oval), playing for the John Hinge cup.

T&T, G16 and co - who are the stand out small, pacy forwards in the SANFL? I know Cameron Hitchcock's name was bandied about here prior to the draft last year and that's turned out to be a great call.

I'd love to snag a ready made crumber in this year's draft.

Can't really comment too much on other sides, because I honestly don't know enough.

This young lad from Norwood kicked 4 on the weekend. He's pretty small, but I'm certain that the weight hasn't been updated for a while.

ROUND 2 POWERADE STAR SEARCH AWARD WINNER:


Congratulations to Alex Grima from Glenelg Football Club for winning the Round 2 Powerade Star Search Award.

In only his second League match for the club, Grima amassed 12 kicks, seven marks, four handballs and five goals in the victory over West Adelaide last Saturday.

Judges said he used his pace to advantage and was a dangerous forward all day.




Personal Note:

Last year Al had the dreaded OP and languished in the magoos.
He was previously Rookie listed at the Hawks.
This was easily his best game at the Bay, if he can do this another half dozen time he'll get drafted for sure.

He is the fastest runner at the Bay.





ABOUT THE POWERADE STAR SEARCH AWARD

The Powerade Star Search Award recognises the talented youngsters making their mark in League ranks.

To be eligible for the award, nominees are required to meet the following criteria:

- Players must have played no more than eight State League games at the start of the 2010 season

- Players must be aged 21 or under at January 1, 2010

- AFL rookies are eligible for the award unless promoted to the senior list of their AFL club

- Players who are suspended by the tribunal during the 2010 season are ineligible to win the award

On the completion of the minor round, one of the 23 nominees will be chosen by the review panel as the 2010 Powerade Star Search Award winner. The award carries a winner’s purse of $2000.
