Re: VFL - Rd 7 - Willi vs Box Hill

I did attend the game, but having been over from Tassie for the Hall of Fame dinner and flying back Sunday morning I had not had time to put my thoughts together until now.

When I arrived at the ground the reserves were close to 3/4 time.
Christian Howard seemed to struggle a little and I am hoping it is just match fitness. I note he was named in the best players but he needed to have been better early to justify that.

Tutt played Ok and shows good endeavour and run.

Prato looked ok in the ruck and certainly had the better of Hawks listed Lowden.

I was also disappointed to see Stephen Tiller walking around the ground and obviously not playing. Hope his injury/unavailability is not a swerious problem.

Everitt Lined up at CHF but also had an occasional ruck stint (Rocco will be pleased) and had a very good game. He marked well on the lead but also in contests. Unfortunately his kicking was below par missing 2 gettables from set shots inside 50. He also showed good run when playing in the back half in qtr 3, with at least one effort being Eagleton like in he ran forward got involved in the chain and went forward again. Actually combined well with Eagle on some attacking forays

Boumann Solid performer at CHB. Closing speed to spoil is good and never seems to try and mark in the contest. Still lacks in strength for rfeal body contests. Does mark ok in space and can use the ball, although he somtimes looks like Brian Lake has taught him too many dinky kicks.

Wood hardly noticeable in the first 3 qtrs playing back, but took the last by storm with 3 or 4 strong runs from half back setting up scoring chances. He just grabbed the ball and charged through with a few bounces. He had been caught once or twice earlier in the game, but seemed unstoppable in the last.

Callan In his first game in 6 weeks Timmy struggled early, but had a breakout last qtr including a nice hanger and goal. Really was the hard at it Timmy Callan of old at the end.

Jones Continues to show a lot of promise. Takes a good contested mark and puts himself in the game. Still has a bit to learn and may not really be ready to debut this year. Did go into the ruck occasionally and competed well.

Eagleton Eagle was a good contributor, gave run, got involved in contested possession, laid tackles and used the ball to create direct goals. Did even have a direct goal assist with a delivery to Little off his RIGHT foot.

Moles Was really involved around the packs and probably the best clearance player. Was busy, but did struggle with disposal a few times. Wins contested footy. In the best 3 on the day.

Hooper Struggled to get into the game but does try. Mostly played forward and does put pressure on the defenders.

Roughead Certainly had the better of the Box Hill ruckmen but was out muscled by smaller opponents on a few occasions. Box Hill used a couple of pinch hitters who were aggressive in the ruck contests and this allowed them to get the better of Roughy sometimes. Roughy does get down the backline to help and I like what I see. However, his performance was a long way behind that of Minson in the VFL games that I saw Will play.

Rose Played more time forward this week and was serviceable. Contributed but not an exciting effort.

Daniels Struggled to get involved and turned the ball over a couple of times early. Did improve as the game went on. Works hard, but appears to lack confidence sometimes, resulting in him maybe letting senior players take balls he should be getting.

Reid Did a few good things, but seemed to be off the ground more than anyone else. Seems to be still struggling with his fitness. He did snag a nice long goal, but needs to do more before he could be considered for senior selection.

Mulligan Played mostly at full back and was ok. Takes a nice mark, but does not seem to know what to do when he gets the ball.

So 13 listed players turned out for Willi seniors. The game was played largely at one end away from the grandstand and I may have missed some things.

The above is my observation only and I have not discussed the game with anyone. Others may disagree with my views, but the players worth consideration for promotion I would limit to Everitt, Moles, Eagleton and maybe Wood.

Markovic listed with a shoulder injury last week.
He was cited as "test" indicating it is not long term.

Tiller was not listed at all and missed. Maybe someone has an idea on what his problem is.

As for the review, happy to know that it is appreciated, but I emphasise it is my opinion from my observation at the game. I have no access to any stats.

I have seen others rate players differently, but I can only provide an honest assessment from my own perspective.

Great reviews like yours are especially appreciated by interstate supporters like myself.

Anyone else beginning to wonder why we recruited Markovic?

                Yes.

Does anyone know the length of his contract?(are we able to cut him after one season)

Markovic is a pretty solid mature bodied player, who adds some VFL leadership to a fairly young group.
He did play quite well as a lead up forward in the Werribee game (early May) Takes a strong mark and good in the packs.

Would be serviceable if he was required to fill in at the top level.

Yeah i think he would be a good backup if certain key backmen of ours got injured.

Sure he's slow and moves a bit like Wayde Skipper but he's a strong mark and a reliable defender. I don't see Boumann, Mulligan, Tiller or Everitt filling in that role any better.

Hargrave seems to be playing injured - could Markovic temporarily replace him, or is he really only a Lake/Williams replacement?

                        .
Is that a viable option at AFL level? If so, could be useful to have two tall targets up forward as an experiment.

                          Markovic is injured as well.

But to answer your question no, he is as you mentioned a back up for our bigger/stronger defenders.

I cannot understand for the life of me why we drafted Markovic, I understand the rationale behind wanting a mature aged back up defender, but after watching him play live it's obvious he would be a liabilty at AFL level. He's slow, totally lacking in lateral movement, and just lumbering, and if fairness he was terrific for Willi in those games.

I can't believe we passed over Matt Mcguire who would be on the same salary, and even if it was only as a backup, we know he can play at the higher level. Markovic is a gun at VFL level because he can read the play very well, is a big guy at that level, and doesn't get exposed for lack of athleticism (which is precisely what we said about Wayde Skipper)

Interesting point. Was he regarded as an injury risk?

Seems to go well at the Lions.
