    The Compo Pick

Over the next 2 seasons clubs losing players to the Gold Coast & West Sydney will be entitled to receive compensation picks. In the case of the Bulldogs we'll have our available to use at the end of the first round sometime over the next 5 years.

A number of teams will be in a similar position to us.

Realistically, just how many teams are going to bank a 'reasonable' draft pick?

If you were one of 16 AFL coaches trying to build the best list availabale, do you look to use your compo pick ASAP, or wait? If you wait & your team struggles, you may not even get to use it (because you've been sacked). Not too many coaches will look to leave something available for their replacement.

In all honesty, I can't see too many compo picks being banked. More than likely most of those at the end of the first round will be used to secure established players.

Factor in development time as well. Using the pick now will potentially gain you an AFL standard player in 1-2 years time. Using the pick in 2 years' time, you are waiting up to 5 years for the kid to establish themselves in the side - how many of the current coaching crop will still be their sides senior coach in 5 years' time?

That's why I think most will use the compo pick to trade for an established player.

Out of Tambling, Sherman & Walker, I hope we get Tambling with this pick.

Is Tambling even on our radar?

If he is I haven't seen his name mentioned in any of the reports.

There was an article linking him to us although no word from the kennel.
There is always a player that comes on the radar that is not reported, hope he is one of them.

I doubt it, but I guess we will find out for sure when silly season starts next Tuesday.

The attached article seems to indicate that he may be up for trade:

UPDATE 11.33am: CARLTON has denied it will try to talk recently retired Melbourne captain James McDonald out of retirement.

The Australian reported this morning that the Demons captain for the past two years and dual best-and-fairest winner would weigh up an offer from the Blues over the next few weeks.

McDonald's manager Tom Petroro said this morning the Blues had contacted him and he would talk to McDonald about the offer when he returned from holidays next week.

But Carlton chief executive Greg Swann denied there was any push to add McDonald's experience to the Blues midfield, led by two-time Brownlow medallist Chris Judd.

"I was surprised as anyone when I saw (that report)," Swann told SEN.

"We have not spoken at all in here about that, and to be perfectly honest at 34 (McDonald) doesn't fit where we're at."

Swann said ruckman Sam Jacobs was likely to head to Adelaide but Andrew Walker and Shaun Grigg, also floated as likely trades, could both still be at Carlton next season.

"Sammy's the only one so far who has categorically said he wants to get out.

"He wants to go back to Adelaide so we'll see what happens there, but unless we get what we want it won't happen."

He said Walker was considering his options but would stay put unless he found a better offer, while the Blues were "hopefully pretty close" to a deal to keep Grigg.

The Blues had given up hope of recruiting Jared Brennan, with Swann saying the former Lion was headed to the Gold Coast.

Swann said the Blues had no interest in Tigers Richard Tambling and Will Thursfield.
