Re: Mock Draft Predictions
Sorry Gary, but I find it somewhat hard to be too enthused about the draft this season, mainly due to the fact that we don't have a 'live pick' until the 4th round, also the Gold Coast having so many early selections.
Strange that it's being held on a Thursday (18 Nov) on the Gold Coast.85, 92, 97, 98, 08, 09, 10... Break the curse! -
Re: Mock Draft Predictions
I have been in discussions with a few people on the forum and we agree that this year will be a lot different for us Bulldog supporters. Still there will be a few of us keen to set some sort of draft order out especially for the first 2 rounds.Sorry Gary, but I find it somewhat hard to be too enthused about the draft this season, mainly due to the fact that we don't have a 'live pick' until the 4th round, also the Gold Coast having so many early selections.

Re: Mock Draft Predictions
1. GC
Need: Everything.
Selection: David Swallow.
Reason: Best junior mid for some time. Outstanding attack on the ball matched by classy skills.
2. GC
Need: Everything.
Selection: Harley Bennell.
Reason: Talented player who can play probably 14 or 15 positions in the modern game. And they believe they can control him.
3. GC
Need: Everything.
Selection: Sam Day.
Reason: Most promising key forward prospect this year and history says that most dominant key forwards in the AFL are amongst the most talented talls in their age group at 18 years of age. Defensive gems might be made, but it would seem forwards are born!
4. WC
Need: Everything. A key defender to cover for Glass (who seems at the end), a key forward to complement Kennedy, a running half back with foot-skills to reduce the pressure on Hurn and any midfielders who can kick....Oh yeah, must have a ‘clean’ off-field record.
Selection: Dyson Heppell.
Reason: Worst case? He becomes a half-back in the Gilbee mould who kicks it well. Best case? He becomes a Dal Santo clone with a bit more leg-speed. Can play next year in their team.
5.BL
Need: Everything (except ruckman ).
Selection: Tom Lynch.
Reason: He will slot into the void left vacant by Brennan’s departure and act as a lead-up player...Fev from the goal-square, Brown in his centre-half-full-forward role. They need a player to help them break the opposition press and Lynch will do that for them.
6.Rich
Need: Everything. But another mid would be the primary wish.
Selection: Andrew Gaff.
Reason: Neat skills, neat mover. Will slot in nicely alongside Cotchin and despite a lack of depth in kicking will be an immediate contributor.
7.GC
Need: Everything.
Selection: Jarrod Polec
Reason: Clayton type – good leg speed, good foot skills...just fits the mold of a modern footballer.
8.Ess
Need: Half-backs with competitiveness and skills, mids.
Selection: Cam Guthrie.
Reason: Strong body, disciplined, good foot skills. Can play right away as a hbf with plan to move into the midfield ‘later’. To me, he is the player who most resembles a Goddard skillset in this draft.
9. GC
Need: Everything.
Selection: Kieran Harper
Reason: Because he could be anything. There is a bit of the Didak’s about him – does the unexpected, the brilliant and GC are in a position to really roll the dice.
10. GC
Need: Everything.
Selection: Pat McCarthy
Reason: Can play straight away in a Frawley style (half back/wing) with the potential to play as a key back in 3-4 years. Good runner, kicks it well – nice player.
11. GC
Need: Everything.
Selection: Ben Jacobs
Reason: Another pick for me because it is Clayton. Jacobs always leaves you wanting more – you just sense there is that little bit extra that he has somewhere in him. Classy mover.
12. Melb
Need: Not much – best available.
Selection: Billie Smedts.
Reason: Versatility – can play in 14 or 15 spots, marks it well and competes hard. Like Guthrie, another with Goddard like ability. Melbourne seem to like their kpp’s skinny and midfielders big so I guess he fits the big mid mold.
13. GC
Need: Everything.
Selection: Josh Caddy
Reason: Speed off the mark. Neat player – to me he tested better than he plays, but whatever. His agility test especially surprised as I wouldn’t have said he was ‘shifty’. I don’t know about this kid – a prototypical ‘good average midfielder’ if you ask me but one who has enough pace off the mark that if it all doesn’t go to plan as a 1st choice on-baller he could definitely play a role as an effective run-with who could hurt you on the rebound.
14. Cows
Need: Not much. Good even squad – some developing mids/half-backs with class I suppose.
Selection: Daniel Gorringe.
Reason: They just got Jacobs but will happily take Gorringe who really looks like a future ruck star. I think they might be a bit surprised to see him still available here – they would be counting on him being on the GC I suspect – but given their strong squad are in a good position to react to it and take him.
15. Cats
Need: Midfielders, key forwards, key defenders.
Selection: Shaun Atley.
Reason: I think they are hoping for Lynch, but will happily take Atley – a head over the ball mid with leg-speed. Catters will be very happy with this.
16. Port
Need: Everything.
Selection: Brodie Smith
Reason: They have a stated desire to take local kids and Smith is the best SA midfielder in the draft. Could play on a HBF alongside Chaplin next year whilst he learns the game and contribute straight away.
17. North
Need: Class.
Selection: Luke Parker.
Reason: They found out something with Andrew Swallow. Highly rated 17yo’s who don’t set the world on fire in their 18th year haven’t lost their ability – they are just distracted and waiting for their AFL careers to start. This kid is possibly the very best mid in the draft – yes, as good as Gaff and Heppell – with good speed, skills and courage.
18. Carlton
Need: Strength in the mid-field, kpp’s.
Selection: Jack Darling.
Reason: He is Brendon Fevola. Young, powerful, agile – if there is a 100-goal a year forward in the draft this is him. They think long and hard about taking Watson, but go with the forward instead.
19. Hawkers
Need: Mids with leg-speed, defenders, ruckman.
Selection: Scott Lycett.
Reason: Strong ruck option who could contribute straight away. With one of the 2 ruck options still available, SURELY they address this here?
20. Dockers
Need: Not much – but have been drafting players with specific skill sets.
Selection: Jamie Cripps.
Reason: Clean handed half-back with foot skills. Very disciplined – chosed ahead of Conca just for his clean hands below knees and relentless running.
21. Sydney
Need: Mids / Half-backs with running ability.
Selection: Sep Tape.
Reason: Strong competitor – Craig Bolton clone potentially who will slot into the full-back line during 2011.
22. Dogs – Irrelevant what we need. Father son selection
23. Geelong
Need: Tall forwards – Mooney getting old, Hawkins hasn’t come through...Gamble delisted
Selection: Aaron Young.
Reason: Tall mid who can mark it. Not exactly an Ablett replacement but could fill that Corey/Kelly role for them as those guys slow down through age/injuries.
24. St Kilda
Need: Class and pace through the midfield.
Selection: Jed Lamb.
Reason: Surely the reliance on Milne is over? Surely???? At the very least he pushes McQualter back to Casey.
25. Lions
Need: Everything.
Selection: Ben Newton.
Reason: Strong over the ball, good enough leg speed, very competitive. What should I tell her? She's going to ask.Comment

Re: Mock Draft Predictions
Great write up Mike, much appreciated. To most of us who have never seen these kids play they are just names that don't mean alot.
Just curios about the bolded bit, how do you mean, control him?85, 92, 97, 98, 08, 09, 10... Break the curse!Comment

Re: Mock Draft Predictions
Here is my 1st round effort
01) GC - David Swallow
Clearly the best and most ready made player in the draft
02) GC - Sam Day
Impressive key forward
03) GC - Harley Bennell
Exciting midfielder/small defender
04) WC - Andrew Gaff
The Eagles need midfielders and Gaff is highly rated. Jack Darling a strong consideration
05) BL - Dyson Heppell
Defender/Winger with a strong penetrating kick
06) RIC - Josh Caddy
Strong player who is good at clearances and contested marks. Dangerous forward.
07) GC - Daniel Gorringe
GC will be a little concerned that he might not pass Essendon and will take him here. Gorringe and Smith will be an athletic ruck tandem in the years to come.
08) - ESS - Jared Polec
Skillful and super quick midfielder with a strong left foot kick. Just what Essendon need
09) GC - Billie Smedts
Highly athletic defender who tested so well at the draft camp. One of the most versatile players in the draft.
10) GC - Jack Darling
Has slipped back a little but when paired with Day this should be an exciting forward combination in the coming years.
11) GC - Shaun Atley
Another very athletic and versatile player who will fit in nicely at the GC.
12) MEL - Tom Lynch
After stocking up on quality midfielders last year the Dees will look for another key forward and Lynch could be the best in the draft.
13) GC - Matthew Watson
Outstanding prospect who tops off the Gold Coast first round selections. Strong left foot kick and will be a key defender for many years.
14) ADL - Kieran Harper
A real burst player who has a strong kick and plenty of pace. A noted goal kicker
15) GEL - Luke Mitchell
Despite losing Ablett I expect the Cats to chase a key forward here and the strong marking and accurate kicking of Mitchell would be hard for them to pass over.
16) PP - Brodie Smith
Strongly built defender or midfielder more than capable of play senior football next season.
17) NTH - Ben Jacobs
Classy defender with a long left foot kick. North need a bit of everything and Jacobs is great prospect.
18) CAR - Pat McCarthy
Genuine key defender with a lot of athleticism
19) HAW - Scott Lycett
After clearing a few ruckman from their list, Lycett is too tempting for the Hawks to pass on.
20) FRE - Luke Parker
Complete package who's athleticism is a real feature.
21) SYD - Jed Lamb
Dangerous forward who can kick a goal
22) WB - Mitch Wallis
Father son selection who most clubs would rate highly. Versatile midfielder.
23) GEL - Dion Prestia
Exciting small midfielder who had a strong season this year.
24) STK - Cameron Guthrie
Quick mid sized defender who attacks the ball.
25) BL - Jayden Pitt
Classy midfielder with good skills.
Priority Pick
26) WC - Jamie Cripps
An attacking and highly skilled player
Compensation Pick
27) NTH - Isaac Smith
The first mature aged recruit at 21 taken this year and one who has been right under Norths nose. Winger/Half Forward with plenty of paceWestern Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: Mock Draft Predictions
Is he capable of playing as a KPD(when he fills out)?
Found this elsewhere
'Rhett Mason Peel - 192cm 81kg
Has already attracted interest from the Bulldogs and Hawks, Rhett is a capable backman who occasionally will allow his man off the leash in search of his own possessions. With more time in a key position he will find the required balance.
Snared himself 17 games this year, his first, since coming down from Waroona and is capable of playing forward if required, his speed off the mark and disposal by foot a feature. Child of 91.
May need another season at WAFL level to demonstrate he has the ability.'The curse is dead.Comment

I think Seb Tape will go beforer McCarthy, but as McCarthy develops in 5 years he'll be the better player.Comment

Re: Mock Draft Predictions
Good job MJP, interesting that you've gone a tall for Brisbane considering most of the supporters have been crying out for a classy midfielder. Honestly I cant see them passing up a mid but if Lynch comes on quickly and Fev finds a bit of form it could be a dangerous trio up there. Correct me if I'm wrong but didnt Voss or someone up there comment that they chased that early pick so that they could grab one of these highly rated mids?
And I think if Gorringe is still available Melbourne would snap him up, can spend some time forward or free up Jamar to do the same, they are desperate for a big body down there to crash the packs and protect Watts/Jurrah. I really rate Gorringe by the way, could very well become the gun ruck of the next decade.Comment

Re: Mock Draft Predictions
Few mids Brisbane could take. I just think they struggle for kick-too targets and the guys already there (mids) would look a lot better if someone with good hands would consistently present to the kicker.Good job MJP, interesting that you've gone a tall for Brisbane considering most of the supporters have been crying out for a classy midfielder. Gorringe? Yeah...I don't like rucks in the first round (at all) but I understand what you are saying. What should I tell her? She's going to ask.Comment

Re: Mock Draft Predictions
Great post mjp!! 2 Questions:
Are you suggesting that Wallis and by implication LIbba don't meet our needs?
Hypothetically, if this had been a draft with no father/sons who would you have suggested the Dog's take with this pick?Comment

Re: Mock Draft Predictions
I don't really think we need pure mids like Wallis and Liberatore in this draft. I think we need run and carry half-backs to replace Hargrave and Gilbee and we need them soon.
I hope Howard is one. I would have been looking at guys like Tape, Cripps or Newton.
All of that said, I like the F/S rule and am pretty pleased to have the two boys at the club. What should I tell her? She's going to ask.Comment
