Re: Foxtel Cup - Rd 1
Was having dinner with my girlfriend and her family while watching the game so I am not sure I can give the greatest review but I did notice a few things of potential note. My review is much more geared towards what I think of these players when it comes to senior aspirations rather than what they actually provided to Williamstown's cause.
Really like the look of Dahlhaus. We obviously went for him due to our lack of pace and thought he was a constant danger.
Schofield really just reeks of a guy who won't let an opportunity go to waste. Seems a hard runner, could be a good option as a defensive forward.
Minson just monsters his opponents at his level.
DJ looked totally at home, not sure whether that's a good thing or not.
Jones kicked a couple but his height doesn't add much value IMO. Most of his opportunities come from chest marks and hard work.
Vez has a ton of talent but really doesn't work hard enough from what I have seen. That puts him in a difficult spot as his lack of an engine/work ethic seems to have pigeon hold him to a small forward role and our forward line already struggles with apply forward pressure.
Really liked Howard's game. He might not have had a 'VFL bests' kinda game but he did the things I want from a player aspiring to play for us. I rated his defensive/contested work and was clean with both hands and feet.
Addison was another who did have a 'VFL bests' kinda game but not sure that's his style. I know he has his critics and fair enough but I definitely think there's a spot for him in a team that struggles with defensive pressure. I would really love to see him in as a defensive forward.
Hooper drifted in and out of the game. He really needs to develop his engine to it's maximum possible level for him to have any chance.
Skinner jumped high and hardly touched the ball.Comment

Re: Foxtel Cup - Rd 1
I watched the game on TV and thought aside from the first 1/4 Willi were terrific. My observations on Dogs players;
Schofield - my BOG. Was resolute and strong in defence when SD were on top early. Kept repelling attacks and provided some run from deep. Looks a certain AFL player.
Minson - challenged Schofield for BOG. Best big man on the ground by far. He just dominates at this level.
Djekurra - very lively in midfield and was the main driving force setting up attacking opportunities. Good game from him and AFL recall must be close.
Cordy - reasonable game as 2nd ruckman and seems to be showing improvement with each game. Picked up a few possessions around the ground and used it well.
Jones - Not into it a lot but did make his presence felt a few times. I like his physicality in contests. Hope to see more of it.
Addison - agree with Rocco.
Howard - reasonable game on the wing. Chipped the ball around and generally hit his targets. Having said that he usually went for the easy target rather than an incisive defence splitting pass. Doesn't look quick or strong in the contest.
Skinner - have now seen him about 5 times and I don't see what all the fuss is about. Looks exciting for sure but doesn't get it. I haven't seen someone kick the ball out on the full as much as he does from such limited possession that he gets. Looking spectacular is not enough.
Hooper - must make more of his opportunities if he wants to be an AFL small forward.
Dalhaus - Looks an AFL player to me. Gets plenty of the ball, has a dash, dangerous near goal, chases hard. Better footballer than Howard.
Johanissen - Didn't see a lot of him.
Vez - Again agree with Rocco. Consistency in effort may be the issue. His pre-season game vs Brisbane was terrific where he was getting kicks all over the ground. Didn't do that today. He doesn't look very fit either. I think he has AFL standard tricks but today's game won't put him in the frame for senior selection.Listening to Brahm's 3rd RacketComment

85% Chance of hitting a target vs maybe 50/50 at best?Comment

Re: Foxtel Cup - Rd 1
So i'd like to see him back himself and try to cut up defences a bit more and try to develop this skill into an elite skill if possible. This is what Murphy, Gilbee and previously Eagle could do and if we can get something similar from Howard then maybe he might make it.Listening to Brahm's 3rd RacketComment

yep, fairy nuff. SOrt of needs to be judged on a kick by kick basis. But i'm still sure the coaches rules would be to take the % everytime.Comment

Re: Foxtel Cup - Rd 1
I would tend to agree, and having seen Howard a few times so far this season i'd say his confidence took a bit of a beating after some woeful games in the pre-season.
From what i saw in the foxtel cup game i thought he was streets ahead of how he performed pre-season so that is a good sign.
Let's hope he continues to improve and gets some confidence backComment

Re: Foxtel Cup - Rd 1
Very impressed with Schofield and Dahlhaus yesterday.
Both wouldn't of been happy to have been playing Willy 2's last week, got the promotion and were best on the ground in the seniors. Reminds me of Harbrow's start to his career with the dogs.
Minson monstered his opponents and ran the large ground very well.
Cordy on the other hand is taller and has more weight now but he still gets pushed out of ruck contests too easily.Comment
