During the 2012 NAB Cup, the AFL Umpiring Department are providing junior umpires with a '2012 NAB Cup Umpiring Experience'. This experience provides opportunities for community umpires to experience the inner sanctum of the umpiring rooms at an AFL match and participate in the warm up prior to the match.

The WRFL have been allocated the Hawthron v Melbourne clash on 10 March at Etihad Stadium. TCP & 3 other junior umpires have been invited to attend where they'll get to meet the umpires in the rooms before the game, listen to the coaches instructions to the umpires, walk out on the ground with the umpires prior to the game, be present at the coin toss after the game they can go back into the rooms to chat with the umpires.

Should be a good experience for him & all the other junior umpires from the various leagues.

Sounds like a great initiative by the AFL to give the junior umps an insight into how the pros go about it.... TCP should really enjoy the day... If he gets Razor tell him to give him one.

TCP is pretty happy, he found out today Chelsea Roffey is goal umpiring on Saturday night!

I've had the pleasure of meeting Ms Roffey. Splendid lady, was great to (albeit briefly) chat footy with her.

It was a great opportunity for the 4 WRFL umpires to meet the AFL umpires. Shane McInnernie was terrific with the kids & gave a really good insight into umpiring at the highest level.

Practice matches commenced last weekend & TCP at the ripe old age of 14 field umpired an Under 18's clash between Albanvale & Sunshine & got through it OK.

Bit of an update.

With Ryan getting more involved in umpiring, I thought I'd do the same, goal umpiring for me (less running) which I'm really enjoying.

Ryan is field umpiring under 18's at present on Saturday mornings & by & large is coping OK, tho on the weekend he didn't endear himself to one particular team, paying a free against them in front of their coaches box. At half time the team manager came into the rooms to query that particular decision (grabbing the ball from the throw in) & was told by the senior umpire that the correct decision was paid. After the game that team put a note in the match report that 'the junior umpire doesn't know the rules'. That is annoying when that occurs, thankfully that decision didn't influence the result, but you wonder why people don't want to umpire at times.

On Sunday's Ryan has decided to mentor young kids umpiring for the first time, so he's with the kids before the game, runs out of the ground with them, helping & encouraging them & afterwards debriefs, if you like. He really understands that if there weren't people giving up their time for him when he started he wouldn't have learnt so much, so he's happy to give back.

He then umpires the under 11/12's or 13/14's (one of those 2 games) & finishes off with the under 16's.

He was asked by the WRFL to put some words together recently to put up on the WRFL's website to attract junior umpires who were interested. Here is what he wrote:

Umpiring Opportunities: (By Ryan Webster, 14 Yrs)

In 2011 I decided to take up umpiring within the WRFL. When I decided to do this, I didn't really know what was involved. I'd been playing footy since Under 9's & that helped, at least I knew the rules. I was 13 years old when I started. I attended an information seminar where we were told that umpiring was a great opportunity to be involved in footy from a different perspective, make new friends, grow in confidence & be paid for it.

I started off by attending one of the WRFL's Umpiring Academies at MacKillop College on Monday nights where I was given a green uniform & taught the basics. The one fear I had was that I'd be on my own & find it all a little daunting. I was pleased to know that was never going to happen as there is a mentoring program in place where experienced umpires give their time to assist new umpires. Initially my mentor came out on the ground with me & as I gradually gained in confidence & experience his role lessened & he'd then talk to me at the breaks & always look to encourage me.

During the course of the season I found I picked things up pretty quickly & as I got to know many of the senior umpires my confidence grew due to the way in which they all made me feel welcome. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself umpiring finals games in my first season, but at the same time felt confident knowing what I'd been taught would stand me in good stead.

Getting involved in umpiring is something I am really pleased about. I get to remain involved in sport, continue to learn new skills, be involved with a fantastic group of people & importantly I get paid for doing something I enjoy. If you're thinking about becoming an umpire, then I would certainly encourage you to do it.

There are so many kids now attending the 3 junior academies run by the umpires in the Western Region.

Recently Ryan umpired an under 18's game at Albion & afterwards we went to Braybrook where I was goal umpiring in the seniors.

At quarter time of the seniors one of the field umpires got crook & had to leave the field so Ryan got back into his whites & umpired the last 3 quarters & didn't miss a beat! He didn't really have time to be nervous which was probably a good thing.

He only had one incident where a Braybrook player said a decision was shit & he had no *!*!*!*!en clue, so Ryan paid a 50 mentre penalty, the opposition player kicked a goal & the Braybrook player was benched.

Last week he umpired the Div 1 reserves at Sunshine & on Saturday also has the Div 1 reserves at Altona.

Hard to believe he's still only 14 years old!

My son has been selected to umpire Auskick games this year, so we'll attend a meeting at Visy Park in March where he'll receive his uniform & appointments.

Each umpire will only do 4 or 5 games & it could be Melbourne v Freo or ANZAC Day, just the luck of the draw.
