Jaeger O'Meara has scouts in spin

THE bidding war for the most wanted midfielder in the country has intensified with claims Jaeger O'Meara possesses Chris Judd-like qualities.

THE bidding war for the most wanted midfielder in the country has intensified with claims Jaeger O'Meara possesses Chris Judd-like qualities.

By next Thursday's deadline, Greater Western Sydney will trade-off access to the silky onballer who, for 12 months, has been the talk of the AFL recruiting world.

But the man with the rockstar name and superstar qualities remains something of a mystery.

O'Meara, 17, who can't play AFL until 2013, has the ultimate mix of speed, endurance, balance, vision and skill.

Gold Coast is in the box seat with the ability to offer the Giants pick No. 4 in next month's draft for O'Meara.

The Suns could be prepared to exchange the mid-first round compensation pick it secured from the Cats last year to the Giants.

One veteran recruiter has likened O'Meara's explosive skill set to dual Brownlow Medallist Judd.

"He is an upright runner like Judd, and has the same sort of power out of the stoppages," the scout said.

"He has great speed and agility and the skill level to match. And he is just able to generate things from not much."

GWS has special rights to trade access for up to four players, including most certainly O'Meara, born between January and April, 1994.

The clubs who offer the best bids will be assigned a pick to use on one of the four players in a one-off mini draft, to be held on Monday, October 17.

A batch of clubs, including Geelong, are in the mix for the second pick, which is tipped to be used on North Ballarat onballer Brad Crouch.

"The other blokes GWS can trade are all very good young players but they're not anywhere near the quality of O'Meara," the recruiter said.

Did some pretty amazing things in the carnival before his groin issues slowed him down...

Do you think they're likely to be a long term issue?

How can you tell? Some with no signs of OP, get it and miss heaps of time - others with all the signs it disappears almost overnight...

He tore some ankle ligaments late in the year as well so he missed a bit of time this year.

All of that said, I have no doubt one of the clubs will throw a lot at GWS for his rights.

Do you think he's likely to pull a "Brad Ebert" and demand to be traded home in 3-4 years?

Can someone please explain to me what is going on in this article?
              1. Why or how do GWS have the rights to this guy? (I assumed it was through the #1 pick they hold?)
              2. If they already somehow own him, why in the world would they trade him for a #4 pick in a draft where the goal is to find a kid like him anyway?

1- GWS get special access to signing 17 yos who go into an exclusive draft
2- GWS cannot have their players, they must trade them. They have a max of 4 over 2 years. I think it was meant to make GWS more short term focused than GC but they are probably just going to trade them for picks anyway.

                  Still a little lost?
How can they "sign" them but not "have" them?
Or is it as simple as giving GWS trade bait to grab an established player from another club?
If this is the case, what if none of the other clubs take the bait? If these kids they own can't play and must be traded?

They are basically trade bait. It seems like GWS will spread it equally over 2 years to maximise the benefits (i.e offering pick 1 and 2 this year AND next year).

There will be kids who aren't selected but it's OK because they cannot play the following year due to their age. They would just go into the normal draft the following year.

Clubs will definitely take the bait, it's all about what the market offers.

So to get it straight, (hypothetically) if the dogs still had Ward. GWS could trade us one of these wonder kids for him, so to basically get a ready made "experienced" team rather than a team of kids?
Isn't this what the compensation picks are for? eg. the ones we got for Ward?
How mant of these types of automatic kids do they have? Not to mention how many draft picks they get as well?

Sorry about this. I'm confused when it comes to drafts and salary caps.

Re: Jaeger O'Meara has scouts in spin

Here's my post about it from another thread, might help.

GWS has access to up to 4 picks in total over this year and next. What happens is players who are born Jan-Apr 1994 (1995 for next year's one) can nominate to be part of this mini-draft. GWS can then take bids from clubs and allocate pick #1 to the best offer. Once pick #1 is done, clubs can bid for pick #2, #3, #4.

It's likely that GWS will only offer two picks up this year and next for 4 in total.

With regards to O'Meara, he's one of the approx 25 or so players who have nominated to go into this mini-draft and is generally expected to be the player any club will choose if they have the #1 pick in the mini-draft.

GWS don't decide which players can nominate for the mini-draft or which players a club can draft from those that nominate. All they can do is allocated picks #1-4 based on who gives them the most.

The bidding must be finalised by Thursday of trade week and the draft will take place at the end of trade week.

Those players that nominated and not traded for are then eligible for the 2012 National Draft. If a club drafts a player through this "mini-draft" they cannot play AFL until 2013 (2014 for those done by the same method next year).

The reason given by the AFL for this was because the NSW/ACT zone selections were expected to be much weaker than the Qld zone selections the GC received.

Nitpicking Divvydan, but it is kids born 1994-1995. otherwise they'd be 27.
