TAC Future Stars - Phantom Draft

Just had a look at the TAC Future Stars show and Terry Wallace and Ben Dixon had us selecting Jimmy Toumpas and Sam Mayes at picks 5 and 6.
Toumpas is just about AFL ready as a defender and Mayes is a highly skilled forward.

Toumpas in particular would be a hard player for us to pass over.

Would you take the same 2 players if you were to do a phantom draft?

Is Toumpas likely to become an A grade midfielder in the long term?

My approach to the draft would be different but Toumpas in particular would be a hard guy to slide past us assuming we don't trade a pick. He's the sort of player that could be locked into a couple of positions for a long while.

He was very impressive in the Championships.

More of an In Bruges guy?

I can't answer that with a lot of confidence. Right at this moment he seems to be just a bit better suited to a defenders position but I'm sure he could be a good midfielder.

Thanks, I would have thought a midfielder and a forward would be higher priorities with our 1 st round picks.

He's a very good player, tough, good decision maker and an effective kick but he might be better value as a creative defender. Like most players, the draft combine tends to provide answers.

Toumpas is great. He isn't really a defender though - I guess I would call him a midfielder who is happiest behind the ball.

I see him playing an outside mid role for a couple of years before becoming a running half back later on...he has a good ability to run and spread...but does roll the dice in doing it.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Lets wait a bit longer before exploring that. It's been a while since we had two early picks and it will at least provide us with some options.

That sums him up perfectly. Thanks.

You would be happy enough if we landed him?

One player that the TAC FS show rated as number 15 is Josh Simpson and he is someone who would offer us a lot of run and athleticism. Slightly built but a an exciting talent.

I am actually in the 'package up the picks and get a forward' group at the moment. If we get Toumpas, fine, he is a nice player and a worthy top 5 pick - but I am not sure how he helps.

I am ready for a big 'roll the dice' moment. I know it didn't work for Brisbane and Fevola, but I am already tired of turning on the game every week to watch a slaughter...it isn't even purgatory - we are down in hell two years after a prelim with seemingly no-way out.

Take some chances - give us (me) hope. If it means we finish last for a season or so, well, as long as I can see a plan I don't care.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I don't mind getting creative but I don't know how we could talk a side out of an effective key forward no matter what we offered.

At this moment I want creative players capable of taking the game on and if it means being patient and waiting longer for that to occur then I can handle that.
The draft and the chips we have in play this year will keep me positive.
