It's a good point. Only Griffen (though not so much recently) and Dahlhaus have this ability for us.

A prime example of this type is Motlop from Geelong. He gets the ball in traffic, sees some space and accelerates away.

Which players in this current draft pool fit the bill?
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

I dont know, mjp will have a good idea. From what Ive read: Garlett, Toumpas, LARS Menzel and maybe Mayes. ORourke and Simpson too?

Grif has about one side-step in his toolbag, but is more of an explosive burst than evasiveness - beats a tag using sheer power. Is much more likely to handball out of trouble than run rings around guys and then kick it like Murphy or Dal can do.

I guess Grif could be the Straight-line-hero poster boy... someone tutt could aspire to emulate - he looks like he has a good build on him. Can anyone definitively say tutty has a burst?

Twinkle-toes Cooney could do it all. sigh

It was mentioned when we drafted howard and tutt that we were moneyballing - identifying an important trait (kicking skills) that was perhaps undervalued and zeroing in on guys who had it.

So obviously howard and tutt, if given time and space, can hit a target by foot on the run. But they have to get the ball in space first. Whereas Dalhaus, with his impossible reflexes and speed, is technically nowhere near as good a kick as those two guys, but one thing he can do is carry the ball out of trouble before dinky-kicking it, which means he ends up being practically more damaging and harder to stop - he has already run 20m out of trouble before identifying the best option and popping the ball over to them.

So maybe we were moneyballing for the wrong trait - we should favour ball-carrying over kicking in general, (but with the great picks we have, we can target players who have both.)

Two Robert Murphys would be nice. Quick, evasive and good skills.

#1 priority for mine would be foot skills. Matched up with pace would be ideal.

IMO you can teach a player to go in harder at the ball. But you can't really teach a player to become better with his disposal.

Must be a prerequisite at the Hawks as their field kicking is second to none.

FWIW, I asked some guy from the D&T board:

KM, who are the top 5 best players at carrying the ball out of trouble, as opposed to having to dispose of the ball if pressured?

            Jack Viney
            Ben Kennedy
            Jonothon O'Rouke
            Dayle Garlett
            Jimmy Toumpas

Im hoping that we get two out of those last three guys with our first two picks. Would turn our midfield fortunes around very quickly and a lot of other stuff would fall into place - scoring and pressure on our defence.

                Interesting thread.

Both Toumpas and Ben Kennedy are out injured at the moment with the dreaded OP. I'm a big fan of Kennedy, but Toumpas is a class above. Have never seen him play in the backline though.

Cant wait for this years draft!

Toumpas is just about AFL ready as a defender and Mayes is a highly skilled forward.

Toumpas in particular would be a hard player for us to pass over.

Seriously, not all will end up in a midfield role, some will become HBF's, others wingers, some defensive forwards. Some will however be traded.

Smith, Dahl and Mayes are all theoretically forwards anyway but can rotate as Mids
Hopefully long term. I'd be happy with Wines, Mayes, O'rourke and I'm still with Stringer at this stage. No more rucks we have plenty and have to bypass Grundy IMO. Worried they'll
Try to turn him into a key forward like the rest of our ruck brigade - it doesn't work 9:10 times

Very few have made the switch - Salmon in his later career, arguably Clark at the Dees (although he was KPF prior to playing ruck for Brissie), Tippett doesn't kick alot of goals but does create chances.
Would have been able to add Darcy to the list if not for knee injuries

Boyd, Cross and Cooney most likely will all be gone in 3 years time.

You can never enough players who can play in the midfield.
More of an In Bruges guy?
