Have a look at the state of the ground. Burbank is almost permanently like that at the moment, the new ground just doesn't drain at all. It's going to need to be renovated again.

Fair few grounds in Melbourne looking like that at the minute. I don't fancy being a cricketer in October/November this year - hard to see many of the grounds around coming up in time for the season.

The WRFL called off an Under 18s final on the weekend (while it was pelting down) - in order to not ruin the ground in the first week of senior finals and jeopardise being able to stay on there (Chirnside in Werribee) for the whole series. Would be good to see more leagues and councils looking after the grounds - the two grounds i saw on the weekend at local footy practically didn't have a blade of grass on them.

^ I played yesterday, the game was moved from a ground that had no grass on it to one that only had about 25% of the ground as ankle-deep mud.
        It's been a shocking winter

Our local ground in Ararat is in magnificent condition after some works last spring.

The ground looks like awesome fun to play on, not so much for spectators though.

Strange you would think Williamstown would have relatively sandy soil being 10 metres from the beach, but i guess not.

We have had so much rain in Melbourne this winter. At one stage we were in the middle of a drought not too far back. What grounds Ozza in your local footy looked bad? Must have been a good old mud bath.

It actually looks like my back yard in the eastern suburbs currently.

The old mx5 nearly got bogged the other day trying to reverse out.

Why it's so concerning for Burbank Oval was the playing surface was relaid as part of the ground redevelopment. The surface is worse now than it was last year, it's probably going to have to be worked on again this summer.

Apparently they have tried to improve the drainage!
Probably started too early on it and with the compressed schedule, it's used too much with small recovery time between matches.
Without even looking at the rain fall this winter. It rained the first match back and it's probably rained during most matches there.

Yep, another interrupted season for them. It's a bit of a fiasco.

It's more of a rivermouth/ mangrove mudflats environment than sandy beach.
I think the sand at willy beach was actually trucked in.

Unless the job was done on the cheap, and rushed there really isn't an excuse for it to be as horrible as it seems right now (from the pictures I've seen).

If the soil profile was river flat mud rather than sand throughout, then the whole ground would have to have been dug up (one metre or so deep, give or take) and a perched water table installed.

Basically, golf courses on low lying lands (greens and approach areas) and football grounds (supported by clubs that can afford them) like the MCG, GABBA, SCG and Kardinia etc use these to ensure more effective drainage. While there is significant outlay in excavation and materials using such a method there is often more cost in having to continually upgrade irrigation and downstream water escape, and a heavy winter can see the ground ruined.

I was just having a look at the VFL competition stats, surprisingly Williamstown's leading goal kicker in the seniors is Tom Hill with 18 goals in 11 games. He's also kicked 18 in 5 games in the reserves.
