    Seagulls set sights on 2013

    link

A permanent spot in Williamstown’s senior lineup will be hard to come by in 2013, with both sides greatly bolstering their lists over the pre-season.

Bulldogs Development Coach and Williamstown Senior Coach Peter German said the increased depth in both sides will cause a selection headache this season, forcing the team to take a more strategic approach in developing its list.

Eight new young pups are yet to have played in Seagulls colours, while the VFL side have made recruitment a priority this pre-season, signing 26 new players – including four previously listed AFL players.

“It’s exciting knowing that the talent we are going to be able to get this year coming down from the Western Bulldogs,” German said.

“I think that the players who do come down to Williamstown - whether they are older, experienced players or even some of the younger boys - I think it’s really, really going to … help for probably a stronger Williamstown side.”

Of the new look Williamstown outfit, German said at least 20 would be in the mix for round one, further emphasising the talent at the Seagulls disposal.

“Maybe 11 or 12 Williamstown players can only play in our senior side, where at the moment … there’s 20 players easy that can put their hand up, and say I am ready for round one,” he said.

German is insistent the Club will continue to pride themselves on winning the contest but have also spent the pre-season emphasising ball use - particularly moving the ball forward.

“We are going to play a strong, contested brand of football and really strong over the football,” he said.

I wonder what happens 2014 with German?
Does he and the dogs make their separate ways? or is he linked more to us in his dual role position?

Williamstown will obviously want to push for their players to play more this year in favour of ours, and we may see a lot of players being rested/rotated to avoid playing Willy reserves.

Listened to German talk on SEN last night and while they still will develop the Bulldog players they obviously have a focus on their on plight the next year.

They have drafted Justin Sherman, Cameron Wood, Willie Wheeler, Brent Prismall, Leigh Masters, Kirby McConnon and others

So basically they have a full time ruckman because they got left without one by the bulldogs on several occasions last year. Sherman has stayed on as a VFL player, Wheeler has come from Coburg and won their b&f as a midfielder, masters is a running half back also from coburg and finished 2nd in their b&f, and McConnon is a 60goal small forward from scoresby in the EFL last year.

Guys like Hunter, Prudden and Greenwood will have to battle hard to get spots.

I don't mind the fact that our guys will have increased pressure on them for spots but I hope we don't see a situation develop where our guys who are performing strongly in the C's and deserve a promotion not get one. Will be an interesting balancing act to observe over the course of the season.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

No, Leigh Williams formerly of Melbourne. He's kicked quite a few goals already this preseason.

There's going to be some very one sided matches in the VFL this year.
